Cabin Fever: Patient Zero to Be the First in a New Trilogy

Dread Central - Wed, 05/08/2013 - 13:48

You know we were just thinking to ourselves the other day... "You know what we need? We need Cabin Fever: Patient Zero to reboot the franchise and kick off a new trilogy!" Okay, so we weren't actually thinking that but apparently Voltage Pictures is.

Screen Daily reports that Voltage is handling Cabin Fever sales at Cannes, along with the original film's producer Evan Astrowsky, and they're developing at least two more films in addition to Patient Zero to create a new trilogy. Hooray!

Sean Astin and Brano Eaton are starring in the pic, which also has Jillian Murray and Ryan Donowho as part of the cast. Mitch Ryan, meanwhile, has stepped into the shoes vacated by Ben Hollingsworth, whose schedule was crunched when he booked a role on The CW’s midseason show "Cult".

The story kicks off when a bachelor party cruise in the Caribbean unexpectedly runs ashore on a medical-research island and a deadly virus is unleashed. The passengers must struggle to find a way to survive before their own demons and the flesh-eating bacteria consumes them all.
Lydia will play a wide-eyed research grad student who is aligned with the film’s antagonist (Astin).

Comic book artist Kaare Andrews is directing from a screenplay penned by Jake Wade Wall (The Hitcher).

The year was 1995 and I was home, excited to see a little movie called Castle Freak. Why? Because the killer was insane looking. Then I saw it... his severed cock-nub. I've never been the same. Now to be able to see said cock-nub in full 1080p? Oh, friggin' my!

Luke Evans Sheds Light on The Crow

    Dread Central - Wed, 05/08/2013 - 12:45

Well, this is interesting... a couple of days ago a script review of Javier Gutierrez's remake of The Crow slipped online, and let's just say it wasn't pretty. Said review made it sound as if this new Crow was a 180-degree turn from the original; however, star Luke Evans tells a different tale.

"[The Crow] was a very poignant film from my childhood, which I remember vividly," Evans tells Coming Soon. "The soundtrack, also. It was such a solid performance that Brandon Lee gave. It was a very tragic end for somebody that probably would have had a very promising career... I'm Eric Draven. I'm the same character. Obviously, he's been refreshed and brought up to date. We're reimagining it to a certain extent, but the story and the plot is mostly the same."

Luke Evans has been tapped by Relativity Media to star as Eric Draven in the story based on the James O'Barr comic book series that was previously adapted as a 1994 Miramax movie starring Brandon Lee. It follows a man who returns from beyond the grave to avenge his death.

Ed Pressman of Pressman Film and Kevin Misher of Misher Films are producing with Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh and Jeff Most. Dan Farah of Farah Films will executive produce with Relativity's Tucker Tooley. Cameras roll in 2014.

    Look for more soon.

Prepare Yourself for the Teaser Trailer for Forbidden Dimensions, Stills and More!

    Dread Central - Wed, 05/08/2013 - 12:15

Melting flesh, gruesome alien mutations, post-apocalyptic machinery, pus-shooting creatures, tits, automatic weaponry and a decidedly NSFW teaser trailer. Occasionally things come across our desks here at Dread Central that make us to grin ear to ear.

Such is the case with the teaser trailer for the insane Forbidden Dimensions.

Executive produced by Warren I. Abbot and written and directed by Chris Miller, the Z Sky Productions/Razorwire Films low-budget feature Forbidden Dimensions' festival run and distribution are imminent, so we thought it time to chat with some of the flick’s principals, including filmmaker Miller and stars Kyle Morris and Jamie Katonic.

"What we were trying to do with Forbidden Dimensions was to recreate the look and feel of the great horror/sci-fi flicks of the 80's,” director Miller told us of the film, which was shot between September of 2012 and February of this year. “That's why there's no greenscreen shots in the movie, and CGI was used sparingly, mostly for touch-up work.”

Filmed in California's Mojave Desert and in and around Los Angeles on the Canon 5D, “We had real sets, prosthetic makeup effects, animatronics, puppets and stop-motion animation,” Miller stated of the film, which also stars Carl Crew (Blood Diner) and porn stars Brittany Oneil and Amy Daly. “This is how a film should be made. It's Max Headroom meets Dune on the set of Road Warrior."

Chatting with actor Kyle Morris (American Girls, Reel Evil), who portrays the film's lead ‘Jack Slade,’ he said of his Forbidden Dimensions experience, “It was intense. We had a very low budget but were able to find locations for a reasonable rate that only increased the positivity of the filming process. I've worked with Chris in the past, and we were able to communicate comfortably and had a trust and understanding as to what the initial goal was of the film. We’re both fans of 80's horror/sci-fi and practical FX, and I had no doubts that it was gonna be a blast. One day we went to Wasteland Weekend, which was a post-apocalyptic Burning Man basically, and with permission to shoot, we ran around filming like kids in a toy store.”

As to what attracted him to such a gonzo production, “They were probably obvious reasons!” Morris effused. “Chris was one of my best friends and offered me the paying gig, and I knew there was gonna be a lot of gore and FX. And after shooting with him in the past, I knew that there would be very little complication, if any, before, during, and after filming. Also, the role was a lead, essentially about a normal guy in a world full of crazies. And I had never done a post-apocalyptic film before. Being a fan of Mad Max, Thunderdome, etc., I knew it was gonna be a blend of those films with a sci-fi twist, but it also seemed like a David Lynch film all the while.”

Co-star Katonic (co-creator of the forthcoming horror comic book series Miss Katonic, which she's created along with Zak Hennessey and the rock band GWAR!) stated of her performance in Forbidden Dimensions, “Even though I was naked in three quarters of the movie, covered in purple goo, making out with puppets, and sometimes covered in blood and completely freezing, it didn't seem to bother me a bit! I was focused on the story, and the comfort level around the director, his crew, and Kyle was always at a total maximum, and when filming was over, I'd wander around the studio forcing Kyle to take photos of me and the life-size alien drone puppets in compromising positions!”

Regarding her attraction to the material, “Who wouldn't want to be the leader of a post-apocalyptic army in a 'B' horror film and be called the 'Star Child'?” she posited. “This kind of role was right up my alley! I want to keep my life fun, creative and adventurous, and I can definitely say I've checked yet another thing off my list in life this year that I'd hoped to accomplish since childhood.”

Stay tuned for a theatrical trailer, poster and official website soon, and in the interim check out actress Jamie Katonic's comic here!

    Synopsis:
Jack Slade was born during a solar eclipse in the year 1980. 18 years later, he finds out he has the ability to travel into the future. He projects himself into the year 2035, where society has been destroyed by a fascist regiment of psychopathic doctors that rule the wastelands, creating deformed mutants with a serum synthesized from the flesh of dead aliens. Now Slade must travel back to the year 1998 to destroy a device known as the wavelength generator, which opened the dimensional gateways to these alien beings. With the help of an army of female outlaws and a sleazy detective, Slade re-connects with the star child Khadijah, who holds the key to stopping these tragic events from ever taking place.

Exclusive First Look at Bill Oberst Jr. in The Black Water Vampire

    Dread Central - Wed, 05/08/2013 - 11:15

Bill Oberst, Jr., is quickly becoming one of the most recognizable faces in the genre, and we're lucky to have him. The guy can do everything from sympathetic to absolutely psychotic at the drop of a dime. On tap right now is an exclusive look at his latest flick, The Black Water Vampire.

    From the Press Release
Filming begins on Bill Oberst’s The Black Water Vampire, a bold new vision of horror: a vampire movie in the found footage style. Jesse Baget (Breathless, Cellmates) is producing the film under his Ruthless Pictures banner.

The Black Water Vampire follows a documentary film crew as they investigate a series of brutal killings known as the Black Water Murders. As they delve deeper into the story, the crew stumbles upon a horrifying secret buried deep in the woods, a secret they might not survive.

Bill Oberst was excited about portraying the alleged serial killer Raymond Banks in the film, “When Jesse asked me to play Raymond Banks, he sent along a link to one of the more disturbing pieces of real-life video I've ever seen for character inspiration; it was a clip of serial killer Aileen Wuornos on the day before her execution. That clip was a stroke of genius. It stayed with me. If my performance works, it will be because of Jesse's talent and his insistence on reality and nuance over cliche.”

Baget is excited about the film. “I think this is a thrilling new take on both vampire movies as well as the found footage films,” he states. Of the film’s star, Bill Oberst, Jr. (Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies, Scary or Die), Baget says, “Bill brings a great deal of horror film experience to the project, which is evident in his hair-raising performance as convicted serial killer Raymond Banks.”

In addition to Bill Oberst, Jr., The Black Water Vampire has secured up-and-comers Danielle Lozeau (The Eye, Legion), Andrea Monier (Elizabethtow, Are You Scared 2), Robin Steffen (The Lackey), and Anthony Fanelli.

Ruthless Pictures is currently in production on two other films, All Hallows’ Eve directed by Damien Leone, and Mischief Night, starring Ally Walker, Charlie O’Connell, Daniel Hugh Kelly, and Erica Leehrsen.

Want to Spend a Night in Disney's Haunted Mansion? How About a Weekend?

    Dread Central - Wed, 05/08/2013 - 10:15

When the DC crew heads out to Disney, there's one thing on the agenda first and foremost - ride The Haunted Mansion again and again and again. We just can't get enough. If all goes well, though, we're also gonna have a pretty bitchin' alternative!

According to Orlando Attractions, Disney is considering attraction themed rooms and resorts and has been sending out polls to recent travelers to see which they'd be interested in between: a Haunted Mansion Room, a Royal Room, and a Pirates of the Caribbean Room.

Here’s the description of the Haunted Mansion room:

"Come spend the night with a few of the happy haunts who play in an enchanted bedroom inspired by the Haunted Mansion. Rest atop the floating Doom Buggy beds with a couple of friendly spooks and watch glow-in-the-dark, cartoon-like footsteps mysteriously appear as the evening sets in. A sliding bookcase creates a hidden passage to the bathroom and is the perfect hiding place for a hitch-hiking ghost. Oversized furnishings with curvy lines and bright colors add to the whimsy in the room. Guests will delight in finding the hidden special effects that play up the merry, rather than scary, room ambiance.

Dear lord, what we'd do for this! Please, Disney! Make this spooky magic happen!

Three More Head to The Town that Dreaded Sundown

    Dread Central - Tue, 05/07/2013 - 23:17

More casting news has come in for the MGM meta redux of The Town that Dreaded Sundown, and we have the skinny on exactly who'll be facing the original Sackhead next. Hint - It's not Steve Dash or Warrington Gillette.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Veronica Cartwright, Gary Cole, and Joshua Leonard (pictured; The Blair Witch Project) have joined the cast of MGM’s The Town That Dreaded Sundown. Cole is a deputy who is doggedly pursuing the killer, and Leonard will play the deputy assigned to protect the previously announced Addison Timlin and her grandmother. Cartwright will play Timlin’s grandmother who is raising her after her parents die in a car accident.

Timlin plays Jami, a girl who survives a copycat massacre at the film’s annual tribute screening and sets out to solve the mystery of who’s recreating the unsolved Sackhead murders, using clues from her own past. Travis Tope plays a classmate who befriends Timlin’s character and decides to make a documentary about the search for the killer.

"American Horror Story" director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon will direct the remake of the 1976 Charles B. Pierce horror classic with Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum producing.

The original movie was based on five unsolved murders attributed to the Phantom Killer during three months in 1946 in and around the city of Texarkana on the border between Texas and Arkansas. Pierce shot large parts of the movie in and around Texarkana with extras recruited from local residents.

Look for more on this one as it comes.

    From the Press Release
Imagination Worldwide, LLC, announced today that it has acquired the foreign distribution rights to the upcoming genre-bending thriller THE SCRIBBLER and will be representing the film at the upcoming Marché du Film held in conjunction with the prestigious 2013 Cannes Film Festival from May 15th through May 26th.

Directed by John Suits and based on the popular British graphic novel written by Dan Schaffer, THE SCRIBBLER features an all-star cast toplined by Katie Cassidy (“Arrow”) and also stars Garret Dillahunt (WINTER’S BONE), Michelle Trachtenberg (“Gossip Girl”), Eliza Dushku (“Dollhouse”), Gina Gershon (KILLER JOE), Michael Imperioli (THE LOVELY BONES), Billy Campbell (“The Killing”), Kunal Nayyar (“The Big Bang Theory”) and Sasha Grey (THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE).

Imagination Worldwide President and CEO Lawrence Goebel stated, “When I took over the ownership of Imagination earlier this year, my primary goal was to rebrand the company by acquiring a more eclectic line-up of higher profile projects. THE SCRIBBLER is exactly the type of edgy and ambitious storytelling that Imagination is seeking, and we are extremely pleased to be working with NAA on this sleek and sexy sci-fi thriller with such an impressive all-star cast.”

“We believe that New Artists Alliance is a rising star in the independent film production world, and Imagination is thrilled to be working with them again on this very special film experience,” Goebel concluded.

Currently in post-production, THE SCRIBBLER follows a troubled young woman named Suki (Cassidy), who confronts her destructive mental illness using an experimental machine called “The Siamese Burn,” which was designed to eliminate multiple personalities. But as Suki gets closer and closer to being “cured,” she’s haunted by a disturbing thought-- what if the last unwanted personality remaining actually turns out to be her true identity?

"Having worked with Larry and his team for years, we know the talent and dedication each IWW member has to contribute,” said NAA founder Gabe Cowan. “With THE SCRIBBLER being part of the next phase of Imagination, we are presented with exciting and incredible new opportunities for this and future films. We are thrilled to be in business together."

THE SCRIBBLER was adapted for the big screen by its creator, Schaffer; originally published by Image Comics in 2006, the mind-bending graphic novel of THE SCRIBBLER will be re-released by First Comics in conjunction with the film’s upcoming domestic debut. THE SCRIBBLER was produced by Cowan and Ken F. Levin of NightSky Productions, and executive producers on the stylized thriller include Caliber Media’s Dallas Sonnier and Jack Heller as well as Kerry Johnson from NAA.
