Sony Offers First Peak At 'H1Z1's' Grim, Post-Apocalyptic World

bloody disgusting - Wed, 04/09/2014 - 22:18

Sony is looking to take a bite out of that delicious, rotten pie that games like DayZ and Rust have been gorging themselves on for some time now. Their first stab at carving out a slice out of the post-apocalyptic survival simulator market to call their own is H1Z1, an MMO where the undead aren’t quite as dangerous as your fellow humanity.

If you like hunger meters and seeing how dark people can get when its Apocalypse Rules, H1Z1 was made with you in mind. Read on for some screenshots and a bit of gameplay footage.

H1Z1 will arrive first on PC. No word yet on whether or not it will come to PS4.

[Interview] 'Oculus' Star Karen Gillan On What Frightened Her While Shooting and Her Favorite Horror Films!!

bloody disgusting - Wed, 04/09/2014 - 21:07

Relativity’s Oculus (review), directed by Mike Flanagan hits theaters in wide release this Friday, April 11th. You’ve seen the trailers by now and if, based on those, you even remotely think this is the movie for you, it probably is. It very much delivers on that aesthetic.

I recently sat down with the film’s lead, Karen Gillan (pictured above; “Doctor Who”, Guardians Of The Galaxy) in Austin, TX. I found her to be an energetic and engaging conversationalist, even though we had very little time to speak due to the hustle and bustle of SXSW. Still, based on her performance in this alone, she’s going places.

The story centers on a murder that left two children orphans with authorities charging the brother while his sister believed that the true culprit was a haunted antique mirror. Now completely rehabilitated and in his twenties, the brother is ready to move on but his sister is determined to prove that the haunted mirror was responsible for destroying their family.” Katee Sackhoff, Rory Cochrane, Brenton Thwaites, Annalise Basso and Garrett Ryan also star.

Check it out below!

When you read this script what was the first thing that went through your head?

[laughs] That there was a 13 page monologue I had to deal with! It was actually a lot harder to learn than if it was a conversational thing of if it had some emotional logic to it. But it wasn’t that, it was a presentation of facts. So that was a challenge. Also I just loved the story and the way it was told. I loved the two timelines. I loved that we got to make a scary horror film that’s a real character piece. Ultimately the stuff we shot was just two people in a room, really.

Did you two have time to prepare? Sometimes you don’t on these things.

Oh yeah, we rehearsed like crazy. I mean we just went to town on that. We just didn’t have any time when we were shooting, so the only way to get everything was to block it beforehand.

It’s a very technical tightrope you’re walking, I imagine it’s easy for an actor to get lost in all of it.

We needed refreshers constantly. That’s where [director] Mike Flanagan came in. He would let us know where we were in relation to everything that was happening in terms of VFX or the story. It starts off normal and gradually gets more explosive until it all comes crashing down. So it was important that we all knew emotionally where we were. Without that there would have been no logical progression.

Was there anything in the script that made you doubt if you could do the film?

Probably just that monologue. To be fair, I jumped into it and I was like, “I’m going to go for it and accept the challenge!” But there was a moment when I was working with my dialect coach and I remembered that I was going to have to talk for 10 minutes straight, in one take, in an accent that was not my own.

But content wise you were okay?

Yeah! I’m pretty into gory films and horror films! You know, it’s scary to put kids in that situation, but they had the best time.

Well now you have to tell me what your favorite horror films are.

I love horror films and grew up on them as a teenager. That’s all I would pretty much watch. Scream is my favorite. I just love that it’s directly addressing the genre and telling us what the rules are. And then executing them all as described. I loved The Exorcist, I used to watch that on my own in bed which was a terrible idea when I was younger. What else? I loved all the cheesy slashers like I Know What You Did Last Summer and there’s this one we used to watch called Death Of A Cheerleader starring Tori Spelling. I think it was a TV movie but we managed to get it on video somehow and we would watch it all the time.

bloody disgusting - Wed, 04/09/2014 - 18:59

Renegade Kid showed a bit more of their ambitious horror game Cult County today with a tour of one of the game’s levels. It’s very much a work in progress, but the footage does do a good job of giving us a feel for the atmosphere. It’s a hot, dead world, and I’m sure that dust is hiding all sorts of horrors that are just waiting to be exposed.

In related news, seeing this game in action makes me thirsty.

Zombie Themed MMO 'H1Z1' Is Official, Playable Soon

bloody disgusting - Wed, 04/09/2014 - 18:05

Back in January, we reported on a possible zombie-themed MMO based on the H1Z1 hoax that took over the Internet a few years back. Now, that game is official. It even has an eerie teaser site.

We don’t know much about it yet, other than it will be a post-apocalyptic MMO from Sony Online Entertainment. We’ll know more when the game is revealed — with gameplay footage! — tonight at 5pm PST. Apparently, a fully playable build isn’t far off, so this game might not be too far away.

As for what it’s about, “H1Z1 is an MMO that allows players to take on the role of an apocalypse survivor who is in a world that is filled with zombies,” Smedley told Game talk Live. “A world! Not just a little tiny server.” Where do I sign up?

@Jedi_Skote you can play it yourself soon. and by play I mean play fully.

'The Grudge' Re-Re-Reboot Will Carry New Mythology

bloody disgusting - Wed, 04/09/2014 - 16:57

Reboots are like a virus infecting all of Hollywood. No, that’s not the plot of the new The Grudge

It was announced a few weeks back that Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe will relaunch The Grudge franchise with Midnight Meat Train scribe Jeff Buhler to draft the reboot. This will be the second time they do so, if you count the Japanese remake (Ju-On: The Grudge is a remake of the made-for-TV horror movie, Ju-On).

An interview with Buhler popped up where he talked about his starting point for the new Ju-On film, and how he plans to approach it.

We’re not approaching this as a remake of the Sarah Michelle Gellar film or a remake of the Ju-On film,” stated Buhler. “This is pushing the mythology forward while keeping the concepts and spirit of those movies, yet finding a new way to tell a story within that world, which is exciting.

The film will also be home to “new characters, new ghost, and a new mythology,” he adds. “I’m not really at a liberty to say anything more than that for obvious reasons, as we are still in the scripting process. I think letting fans of the original series know that we are not going back to (the character of) Kayako and trying to mine what’s already been mined is important (though). We are still very early in the process.

The 2004 pic starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, cost around $10 million, grossed $187 million worldwide and hatched a sequel. It was based on the Japanese horror thriller Ju-On by Takashi Shimizu. Gellar played a nurse in Tokyo who was afflicted by a curse that created uncontrollable rage and was pretty much fatal.

'Evil Breakfast Dead Club' To Parody the 1980's!

    bloody disgusting - Wed, 04/09/2014 - 16:46

Infinite Spectrum Production is getting clever with their new indie, Evil Breakfast Dead Club (well, that’s a mouthful).

Kevin Phipps directs, sources tell Bloody Disgusting, from a screenplay by Jon Bonnell.

We’re told that the film follows a group of rule-breaking teens who have a run-in with teenager possessing demons. The pitch is sort of funny: They broke the rules, they touched each other, and they swallowed each others’ souls. Get it?

While you may find it annoying, it’s not, because this is a parody of 80′s films ranging from The Breakfast Club to The Evil Dead. Cool!

Check out the following spoof made back in 2009 that inspired the feature…

Full Cast Reveal - See Who's Going Sundowning on M. Night Shyamalan

    Dread Central - Wed, 04/09/2014 - 16:25

The full cast has been revealed for M. Night Shyamalan's latest foray into the world of the spooky known as Sundowning, and we have all the details you need minus the twist. That will come, as always, at the end.

The pillar of journalistic integrity known as IMDb has posted the cast (so take this with a grain of salt).

In addition to the previously announced Kathryn Hahn and Ed Oxenbould, it seems Erica Lynne Marszalek, Peter McRobbie, Olivia DeJonge, Deanna Dunagan, Benjamin Kanes, Jon Douglas Rainey, Brian Gildea, Shawn Gonzalez, Richard Barlow, Steve Annan, and Michael Mariano have all been added to the cast.

Black Swan's costumer Amy Westcott and production designer Therese DePerez are working on the film alongside French cinematographer Maryse Alberti (The Wrestler).

Hahn plays a single mother whose two young children visit their grandparents… and things go very wrong. Oxenbould plays her son, who is protective of his sister.

No other plot details were immediately available, as Shyamalan prefers to surprise his audience. However, “sundowning” is described as a psychological phenomenon associated with increased confusion and restlessness in patients with some form of dementia. Symptoms also include agitation and mood swings.

New Poster for The Demolisher Isn't Monkeying Around

    Dread Central - Wed, 04/09/2014 - 16:14

We first told you about the "hyper-violent" new film from Latefox Pictures entitled The Demolisher back in February and today we have a brand spanking new bit of teaser art for you cats to chew on! Dig it!

Check out the goods below via Bloody Disgusting.

    From the Press Release:
Latefox Pictures will be slamming into production with The Demolisher, scheduled to begin shooting in late spring 2014.

Directed by Gabriel Carrer (In the House of Flies), The Demolisher chronicles the story of a man named Bruce (Ry Barrett; The Drownsman), an ordinary repairman tormented by a crippling sense of responsibility for his disabled wife, Samantha (Tianna Nori; Clean Break), a former policewoman and survivor of a gang-related assault. Bruce’s increasing hyper-sensitivity to the injustice suffered by his wife steers him down a dark path of vigilantism. With his rapidly disintegrating mental health, paranoia, and overwhelming sense of condemnation, Bruce channels his inner rage, punishing a young woman, Marie (Jessica Vano; The Unabomber Manifesto), and finding refuge in a world of intense violence.

The Demolisher is both a character study and a psychological examination of trauma, resulting in an unapologetic portrayal of what can happen when a fragile mind is pushed too far. “The film is complex and character-driven, dealing with an outpouring of raw emotion,” said director Carrer, also one of the film’s producers. “It delicately juggles our sympathetic nature and reactions to chance encounters with the dangerous and addicted intoxication of violence. The film’s narrative pertains to the film industry, or any industry for that matter, and the level of abuse that can be endured,” he concludes.

Award-winning cinematographer Martin Buzora (Neverlost) will capture the film’s fresh hyper-visual aesthetic. Along with Carrer, The Demolisher is produced by Barrett, AK Lamm, Duane Frey, Christian Burgess, Martin Buzora, Nathan Hawkins, and Andrew Wood.

For further information, visit the official The Demolisher Facebook page, which will be regularly updated with concept artwork and sneak previews from the upcoming soundtrack, produced worldwide by talented and upcoming electronic music producers and remixers.

WGN Taps Justin Lin to Furnish Their Radiant Doors

    Dread Central - Wed, 04/09/2014 - 15:53

Ah, the future. Who knows what it holds. Wonders? Horrors? Both? One way to find out would be to have someone time travel back to us and give us the skinny, but who knows what kind of butterfly effect that would cause? Enter the new series from WGN America.

Not sure how Dread-worthy this will turn out to be but Deadline is reporting that Gaumont International Television ("Hannibal") has teamed with filmmaker Justin Lin and his Perfect Storm Entertainment for "Radiant Doors."

The project, from writer Jeremy Doner ("The Killing"), has received a script against a series commitment, meaning that it would go straight to series if the pilot script gets WGN’s approval. Lin is set to direct and executive produce with Doner and Perfect Storm’s Danielle Woodrow and Troy Craig Poon with Ryan Andolina serving as co-producer.

An adaptation of the short story by Michael Swanwick which was featured in his Tales of Old Earth collection, "Radiant Doors" is described as a gripping drama series exploring how our society deals with the sudden arrival of a flood of refugees from a dystopian future.

“We have been wanting to work with both Justin and Jeremy and are so happy to have them come together on this project,” said GIT CEO Katie O’Connell. “The award-winning short story really captivated all of us with its transcendent themes.

Both WGN America and GIT are in the straight-to-series business. WGN’s first original drama, "Salem," premieres April 20.

Writer Jeff Buhler Sheds Light on Grudge Remake

    Dread Central - Wed, 04/09/2014 - 15:07

We told you that there was a remake or reboot or re-imagining or whatever they're calling it now of The Grudge a few weeks back, and today some details as to just what this flick will be have come to light.

Writer Jeff Buhler spoke with FEARnet recently about what we should expect...

"We’re not approaching this as a remake of the Sarah Michelle Gellar film or a remake of the Ju-on film,” stated Buhler. “This is pushing the mythology forward while keeping the concepts and spirit of those movies, yet finding a new way to tell a story within that world, which is exciting.

Buhler also stated that the film will be home to "new characters, new ghost, and a new mythology. I’m not really at a liberty to say anything more than that for obvious reasons, as we are still in the scripting process. I think letting fans of the original series know that we are not going back to (the character of) Kayako and trying to mine what’s already been mined is important (though). We are still very early in the process.”

    bloody disgusting - Wed, 04/09/2014 - 15:00

Relativity’s Oculus (review), directed by Mike Flanagan hits theaters on April 11th. The film has many, many people championing it and I’m quite confident it’ll hit the sweet spot for most of you guys.

I recently sat down with stars Rory Cochrane and Katee Sackhoff to talk about the most challenging moments during filming and what it was like being a part of a separate timeline from the other two protagonists. The story centers on a murder that left two children orphans with authorities charging the brother while his sister believed that the true culprit was a haunted antique mirror. Now completely rehabilitated and in his twenties, the brother is ready to move on but his sister is determined to prove that the haunted mirror was responsible for destroying their family.” Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites, Annalise Basso and Garrett Ryan also star.
