[Crowd Source This!] ‘Autumn Moon’ the Most Violent Werewolf Movie Ever?!

bloody disgusting - Tue, 04/22/2014 - 11:02
Is this the year of the wolf?

With MPI/Dark Sky Film’s practical-heavy Late Phases making festival rounds, it appears the werewolf sub-genre has returned!

For those of you who want more, there’s a Kickstarter campaign to help Randy R. Fabert’s Autumn Moon, which promises to be “the most violent werewolf film ever made,” become a reality.

Here’s what the film will be about: “Pulp writer Michael Renee Allen thought the house on the edge of the woods would be the perfect place to write his next novel. He soon finds that the forest has more to offer than just fresh air and a nice view. The cast includes: Bill Oberst Jr.(Children of Sorrow, Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies), Lynn Lowry (Shivers, Cat People), Camden Toy (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2), Timothy Waldrip (Kiss of the Vampire, 21 Jump Street), Joe Kidd (That’s What She Said), Michael Peake (Only Human), Nathaniel Grauwelman (Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies), Iabou Windimere (Psycho Killer, Sidney), Jocelyn Tanis (The Medal), Larry Combs, Gerri Sutyak (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Sonny Burnette (Zombies R Friends), Richard Aughpin (Dragoon, Sidney), and Randy Fabert (Psycho Killer).

Fabert has already filmed the opening werewolf attack scene… an old school blood-fest with practical effects. Want proof? Check out a bunch of insane images below and prepare for goosebumps.

Jake Busey Talks From Dusk Till Dawn, How Robert Rodriguez and Mayan Gods Saved Him, Snake People, and More

Dread Central - Tue, 04/22/2014 - 10:30

Robert Rodriguez's El Rey Network is the Tuesday night home of "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series," and among its stars is Jake Busey as Professor Tanner. Busey recently sat down with Dread Central to dish some info on the show.

"FDTD" is taking tonight off so we thought what better time to catch our breath and chat with Busey about how he became involved with the series, how it compares to the movie on which it's based, what exactly the creatures in it are, and much more.

Busey opened by saying how thrilled he was that Rodriguez hired him for the role of Professor Tanner.

"I feel like I hit the lottery," Busey said. "Robert Rodriguez is the lifesaver of the Jake Busey career. I had some downtime. I had a couple years of complacency. If you're not on the gas, if you're not relentlessly pushing and pushing and pushing, you will fall off the train and get pushed aside by the next guy coming along."

"In 2011 I found some stability in my life and really started working and getting jobs and having focus. But it was just little parts. No one would hire me for anything serious. It was guest stars and things like that. Robert Rodriguez… I walked up to him at the Machete Kills premiere. And I haven't been to a premiere in ages. I was like I was a fish out of water. I'm a homebody. I don't really like going out and dealing with people so it's hard for me, but it's a necessity. So I walk up to Robert after the movie, and I honestly tell him how much I loved the film. And I was like, 'Dude, you've gotta hire me for Machete Kills in Space or whatever's next. I've gotta work with you!"

Apparently that request was not lost on the director. "Robert and I had met in '94 but had never worked together," Busey said. "And my career was now dead, and when I gave Robert that compliment and said, 'I've gotta work with you,' he said, 'You know what, man? I'll keep that in mind.' And a month later I was auditioning for 'From Dusk Till Dawn,' which is such a coup because the movie is such a cult classic and one of my favorites."

So what exactly is the "From Dusk Till Dawn" television series? For those who haven't seen it, it's like a retelling of the story from the film; however, instead of telling it over the course of a movie, the story is being told over the course of a television season, so obviously there is much more to it this time around. Busey sums it up nicely.

"There was a period in my life when I started dating this girl who was very sharp and very well read," Busey said, "and she was curious about my career and how the movie industry works. And I said, 'Here's a script!' proudly. Like, 'This is what I do. You read books? Here, read this. This'll really knock you on your ass.' She read it in 20 minutes, where it takes me three hours to read a script, and she turned and said, 'That's pretty cool. It's kinda like a short story.' And I was like, 'What?!' She said, 'Yeah, like a novella. It's 110 to 120 pages. It takes you from the bottom to the top to the resolution. It's a nice little short story.' That opened my eyes to a reality. And as I'm reading the 'From Dusk Till Dawn' scripts, I'm thinking, 'Oh, right! It reads exactly like the movie, but what we are doing is the full-scale novel… and the movie is the short story.'"

The series includes so much more detail and information that the film simply didn't have room for. Busey explained some of the additions.

"We dive right in," he said enthusiastically. "We explain why Richie is having his visions. In the movie you see Tarantino; he kinda has his visions when he's with the bank teller in the motel and he freaks out and shoots her. And as an audience member you're like, 'Oh yeah, this guy's nuts!' But with the TV show, you're like, 'Oh, he's having supernatural visions.' And there's Mayan gods and snake people!"

Snake people?! Those who have already seen the show will confirm that the baddies in "From Dusk Till Dawn" are certainly reminiscent of vampires, but with some completely new traits. "'The Walking Dead' has zombies covered. 'True Blood' has vampires covered and then they added werewolves and then they added fairies," Busey said. "What Robert and his crew, [exec producer] Carlos Coto especially, have done is really taken an interesting idea from the film, fleshed it out, and made it to where there's a new monster. And they even go so far as to explain this monster and say early Spanish conquistadors confused these monsters for vampires when they arrived and dealt with them. Because they had known about the vampire from Eastern Europe so they just assumed that those 'culebras' were vampires because of the fangs and what have you. But as it turns out, they are Mayan snake people. Snake gods!"

And the look of the creatures is incredible! "It's a great device in the show," Busey said. "You're watching and [at first] say, 'Oh, they're doing another vampire thing. It's a rip-off of "True Blood." Oh, but their fangs are longer… yadda, yadda.' Then you find out, 'Oh! They're fucking anaconda humans! Those are snake fangs with venom!' It's a whole different thing."

The character Busey plays, Professor Tanner (who in last week's episode turned out to also be "Sex Machine," crotch-gun and all), could not be more perfect for him. "I've never been cast in a role that was this near who I am, and this is really fulfilling," Busey effused. "When I read the script, I thought, 'I've got to play this role. It really fits… like a comfortable jacket.' I'm somewhat of a nerd and a stickler for detail, and I like discovering the details in unique history and mythology and interesting stories. So for me, Professor Tanner, who's a professor of archeology and kind of like Indiana Jones when he's in the classroom, is very satisfying. For me, it's a wonderful role."

Busey has been thoroughly impressed by everything involved with the "From Dusk Till Dawn" series thus far. "It's really amazing and has exceeded my expectations as far as crew and cast and story and set," Busey said. "It's just amazing. I really feel if people know about this and know about the El Rey channel, if the audience knows where it is and knows about it, it's going to be on par with 'The Walking Dead' when it took off. I've gotta knock on wood on that one, but it's just been a blessing to be a part of it. And Robert hired me when no one else would, and I've really got to thank him for that."

"From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" returns to the El Rey Network on April 29th with Episode 1.07, "Pandemonium." Visit the El Rey Network website and enter your zip code to find out how to see it in your area.

If it's available where you live and you need to catch up, there will be a "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" marathon on Sunday, April 27th, beginning at 9 am PT/12 noon ET, repeating multiple times throughout the day. You can also find it in the U.S. via the following partners: Amazon, iTunes, Sony Playstation, Xbox, Vudu, Google Play, Cinemanow, Blackberry, and Target Ticket. Each episode is made available the day after broadcast on all outlets.

“From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series” centers on bank robber Seth Gecko (D.J. Cotrona) and his violent, unpredictable brother, Richard “Richie” Gecko (Zane Holtz). The series deepens the tone of the original film, adds new characters and backstories, and expands the Mesoamerican mythology behind the creatures inside the club.

Along with Cotrona and Holtz, the international cast includes Jesse Garcia, Eiza González, Wilmer Valderrama, Adrianne Palicki, Jake Busey, Don Johnson, Madison Davenport, Lane Garrison, Robert Patrick, and Brandon Soo Hoo. The 10-episode, hour-long series is El Rey Network's first scripted original and has already been renewed for a second season.

"From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" Episode 1.07, "Pandemonium" (airs 4/29/14)
With everyone at odds, the Gecko brothers and the Fuller family are forced to sit down and watch the nightly performance by Santanico Pandemonium. When Ranger Freddie Gonzalez shows up to exact revenge, the show takes an unexpectedly savage turn. Teleplay by Diego Gutierrez; directed by Robert Rodriguez.

[Blu-ray Review] Arrow Gives ‘Hell Comes To Frogtown’ A Fine LE Release!

    bloody disgusting - Tue, 04/22/2014 - 09:27
The Film: I’ve always been a huge fan of John Carpenter’s brilliant sci-fi actioner They Live starring one of my favorite WWE superstars from my youth, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. It’s one of my personal standouts from Carpenter’s rich filmography. They Live’s provocative social commentary, Piper’s surprisingly authentic everyman performance and the infamous alleyway brawl between our hero and the always good Keith David are just a few of the elements that make this cult classic every bit as enjoyable and vital today. In the same year of its release but with much smaller fanfare came another Piper-starring sci-fier, Hell Comes to Frogtown. For some reason, I’ve never sat through the movie in its entirety until now; Arrow Video’s recently released Limited Edition Blu-ray/DVD combo. The film is pretty much what you’d expect from a low budget post-apocalyptic film with a former wrestling legend, scantily clad women and a bunch of mutant frogs. Much to my surprise, Hell Comes to Frogtown packs a little something extra along with its B entertainment value. In a post-nuclear war landscape where the human race is bordering on extinction, ex-con Sam Hell (Piper) happens to be one of the last few fertile men on the planet. He is captured by a group of women who happen to be the closest thing resembling a government and is sent on a mission to rescue a group of fertile ladies from a gang of mutant frogs. If this all sounds rather silly, it’s because it is. Somehow though, Hell Comes to Frogtown manages to works due to the filmmakers striking the right tone; mixing a bit of social commentary, along with not taking its B-movie roots too seriously. Clocking less than 90 minutes, Hell Comes to Frogtown never overstays its welcome. It’s breezy, quick-footed fun throughout.

The casting of Piper is easily the film’s best attribute. He brings an oddly affecting and easy-going charm to Sam Hell, much in the same way he brought to They Live’s Nada. There is a grounded honesty to Piper that none of his wrestling counterparts have managed to inject into their film roles to date. It adds a share of heart to all the silliness which I’m not sure Hell Comes to Frogtown would have worked as successfully without. On a technical level, the film is competent enough. The standout being the mutant frogs by effects whiz Steve Wang (Director of The Guyver flicks and the criminally underseen 1997 action/comedy Drive) which still looks shockingly good after all these years. Hell Comes to Frogtown is far more enjoyable than it probably deserves to be. After finally getting the opportunity to view it, I now realize how the movie has earned its loyal following 26 years since its release. 3/5 Skulls

The A/V: I’m pleased to announce that the dark, murky appearance that’s plagued Hell Comes to Frogtown in previous home video incarnations is now a thing of the past. This HD video is brighter, revealing details previously unseen. Colors look far more natural to the eye. The image is soft but that has to do with how the film was shot than the transfer itself. The print is also in far better shape than I was expecting. The original 2.0 stereo PCM mix is as good as this film will ever sound. This is one major upgrade. 4/5 Skulls

The Supplements: The commentary by Director Donald G. Jackson and Writer Randall Frakes from the Anchor Bay DVD is unfortunately not here. However Arrow Video gives us 51 minutes worth of fine, new featurettes for our enjoyment. “Grappling with Green Gargantuans” (22 mins) is an entertaining interview with Rowdy Roddy Piper. As per usual, he’s honest, humble and engaging as he reminisces on his experiences during the production. “Amphibian Armageddon” (14 mins) is a chat with Commander Toty himself Brian Frank and “Creature Feature Creator” deals with Wang’s still impressive contributions. An extended scene and original trailer is included, as wells as a reversible sleeve featuring original and a newly commissioned artwork by Jeff Zornow (which is very cool), a booklet featuring new piece by author and critic Calum Waddell. 3.5/5 Skulls

Overall: Hell Comes to Frogtown is goofy fun yet with just enough smarts with its satirical underbelly to make it a cut above most B pictures. Arrow Video gives it more love than a title of this kind is generally accustomed to. The special features, not to mention the far superior A/V makes this purchase a no-brainer for fans. Hell Comes to Frogtown is limited to a run of just a 1000 copies so act today if this sort of thing strikes your fancy. It’s well worth a spot in your collection.

    The ‘Terminator’ Is Back!

    bloody disgusting - Mon, 04/21/2014 - 22:35
Is Arnold good or bad this time around?

It’s always such a great feeling hearing that a film is officially behind cameras. At that point there’s no going back, and fans can rejoice in knowing that the film they’ve been hoping would come into fruition is locked and loaded.

Such the case with Terminator: Genesis, the fifth film in franchise, which has begun principal photograph today in New Orleans.

Below are some images from set, including the slate and Arnold Schwarzenegger rocking his 90′s leather pants (clearly a scene that takes place during T2).

Schwarzenegger is back in various forms of the Terminator cyborg (also known as the T-800, T-850 or Model 101). Dayo Okeniyi is playing the son of Miles Dyson, the Cyberdyne exec played by Joe Morton in Terminator: Judgement Day. Emilia Clarke takes on the major role of Sarah Connor, with Jai Courtney playing Kyle Reese, Jason Clarke as John Connor, as well as Byung-hun.

The Terminator is back July 1, 2015.

First Images from the Set of Terminator: Genesis

    Dread Central - Mon, 04/21/2014 - 21:46

Terminator: Genesis, the fifth film in the Terminator franchise, began principal photograph today in New Orleans, and already the imagery from the set is pouring out.

Genesis, which is the film's working title at this stage, aims to be a continuation of the James Cameron classics and is trying to tie in all the threads and even take into consideration the time passed.

Schwarzenegger is back as the Terminator cyborg, and his older appearance will be explained. Dayo Okeniyi is playing the son of Miles Dyson, the Cyberdyne exec played by Joe Morton in Terminator: Judgement Day; the character was a little boy in that movie. Emilia Clarke is portraying Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney will be Kyle Reese, Jason Clarke is John Connor, and Byung-hun Lee will play an as of yet specified role.

The film has a July 1, 2015, release date.

The archangel Michael, turning against his own kind, has chosen to side with humanity against Gabriel. Rising out of the ashes of the 25-year battle are newly fortified cities which protect the human survivors. In Vega (formerly Las Vegas), the largest of these cities, two houses vie for control; and the stage is set for political upheaval and a dangerous power shift. Meanwhile, a rebellious young soldier begins a perilous journey as the war between the human race and the fallen angels hell-bent on their domination escalates.

"Dominion," produced by Universal Cable Productions and Bold Films, is in production in Cape Town, South Africa. The series is executive produced by Vaun Wilmott, Todd Slavkin, and Darren Swimmer, along with executive producers Scott Stewart, who co-wrote and directed the feature film Legion, Michael Litvak, and David Lancaster of Bold Films, who produced the original film. Film Afrika serves as the local production entity in South Africa.

New Artwork for From Dusk Till Dawn Asks: What Would You Do for Santanico Pandemonium?

    Dread Central - Mon, 04/21/2014 - 19:03

We still have another week to wait for the return of "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" to El Rey's Tuesday night lineup, but to keep you busy, a new promo campaign has begun that asks: What would you do for Santanico Pandemonium?

El Rey Network's new multi-platform promotional initiative is titled "Slaves for Santánico," and it was designed to drive fan engagement and sampling for El Rey Network's first original scripted series, "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series."

The innovative marketing program, which runs April 21st through May 21st, is timed to support the airing of the series' final four episodes, beginning with Episode 1.07, "Pandemonium" (airing April 29th), which features Eiza Gonzalez as Santánico Pandemonium. Credited for launching actress Salma Hayek's career, the Santánico character has been etched into the memory of fans around the globe, and in Episode 1.07, Gonzalez will reenact the iconic snake dance from the cult classic film (which features special makeup effects by "The Walking Dead's" award-winning makeup guru, Greg Nicotero, who oversees makeup effects for the El Rey Network series).

The Santánico party line (1-800-315-2744) will lure callers into a highly responsive two- to three-minute conversation wherein Santánico herself seduces them into answering the question, "What would you do for Santánico Pandemonium?" The personal experience will vary based on caller responses, making for an unforgettable and unduplicated encounter for users.

The campaign, conceived by Campfire, part of SapientNitro, with media planning by Media Storm and technology provided by Dinah Moe, will allow El Rey Network to capture participant responses. The most creative answers will be recreated as visual postcards and posted on a customized TUMBLR page, hosted on SlavesForSantánico.com, and shared via El Rey Network's extensive social platforms. As a parting gift to her most devoted "worshipers," Santánico will provide a passcode where fans can log on to SlavesForSantánico.com and collect exclusive "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" digital goods.

The full brand experience will target consumers through advertising on three platforms including mobile, radio, and out-of-home. Santánico Party Line branded voice-activated urinal cakes and burlesque-style posters will be distributed in designated bars throughout New York and Los Angeles. Mobile ads will be activated to simulate incoming calls from Santánico, and targeted radio spots featuring Santánico and Carlos Madrigal (portrayed in the series by Wilmer Valderrama) will tempt fans to dial in and become "Slaves for Santánico."

Chad Blankenship, El Rey Network's Vice President, Consumer Marketing & Communications, said: "From Dusk Till Dawn's iconic characters are the perfect jumping off point for this innovative, multi-platform initiative. The party line and creative campaign activations leverage Santánico Pandemonium's enormous popularity and invite fans to participate more deeply in the series narrative. The concept is sure to entice new viewers and appeal to the highly coveted demo of men 18-49, including the all-important millennial fan base."

If you need to catch up, there will be a "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" marathon on Sunday, April 27th, beginning at 9 am PT/12 noon ET (repeating multiple times throughout the day). You can also find it in the U.S. via the following partners: Amazon, iTunes, Sony Playstation, Xbox, Vudu, Google Play, Cinemanow, Blackberry, and Target Ticket. Each episode is made available the day after broadcast on all outlets.

    Dog Soldiers Blu-ray Release Delayed

    Dread Central - Mon, 04/21/2014 - 18:56

If you're eagerly awaiting the Blu-ray release of Dog Soldiers, we have some crappy news for you that has come via the Scream Factory Facebook page. The release has been delayed until 2015.

"Sorry guys but there's been a change of plans for our upcoming Collector's Edition release of DOG SOLDIERS that we need to make you aware of... Due to unforeseen issues on clear ownership of the rights, we are forced to move the title off of its planned August 26th release."

"Rest assured, we are doing everything we can to work out a solution to bring this back into our scary fold, but as of now, the street date is undetermined and there is a strong possibility of it moving to early 2015. As always, we will keep you guys posted on any developments. Our apologies again."

What's with werewolf properties with rights issues? I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the whole "Werewolf: The Series" debacle. Oh, well. I'm sure our patience while they get this all straightened out will be rewarded - as always - tenfold.

For more in the meantime, visit the official Scream Factory website, and "like" Scream Factory on Facebook.

Mexico Gets Darker Than The Night in 3D

    Dread Central - Mon, 04/21/2014 - 18:40

More Mexican horror is on the menu with the 3D release of Mas Negro Que La Noche, or, as it will be known here in the States, Darker Than The Night. We have details, a ton of images, and some artwork for ya! Check it all out!

    From the Press Release
Mexico’s Filmadora Nacional, Celeste Films, and Itaca have teamed with Spain’s Neo Art to produce Mas Negro Que La Noche (Darker Than the Night), a remake of a 1975 shock-fest classic that will be Mexico’s initial live-action stereoscopic 3D movie.

A remake of Mexican fear director Carlos Enrique Taboada’s shock-fest of a same title, now considered a classic, Night has the makings to be one of Mexico’s largest releases of 2014.

It keeps the simple set-up of the 1975 classic: When four women move into an old house left by one woman's aunt, strange things begin to happen. Bizarre voices, visions of ghosts, and mysterious noises lead them to discover the darkest powers of evil and a horror and agony beyond terror.

Along with a soon-to-be-attached sales agent, Neo Art owner Antonia Nava and Latam Distribucion’s Eduardo Caso will deliver a 3D demo to buyers during May’s Cannes Market.

A late August/early September release date is anticipated.
