5 Skull Comic Review: ‘Sex Criminals’ # 10 – Come For The Boners, Stay For The Feels

bloody disgusting - Wed, 01/28/2015 - 13:36

Reviewed By Eric Switzer. “Sex Criminals” #10, the finale of the second arc, has Jon and Suzie meeting up with Ms. “Kincaid” to test the limits of their sexy super powers.  This issue may have hit the threshold for tasteless nudity in comics, and I mean that as a compliment, while simultaneously having the most heart of any issue to date. With “Sex Criminals” you cum for the boners, stay for the feels.  This issue has tons of both and you’re gonna love it.

WRITTEN BY: Matt Fraction

ART BY: Chip Zdarsky

PRICE: $3.50

RELEASE: January 28, 2015

The past couple issue confused me a little bit.  I hate to admit that, as I typically assume the blame for not reading carefully enough, but the unceremonious shift in how time is used in the series has caused me to pause and look back, and the beginning of the last issue that followed Kincaid and the beginning of this issue showing Jon’s shrink writing about his conversation with Jon before having that conversation, chronologically, the series has thrown me for a loop, but it doesn’t distract from what is otherwise a standout issue.

Jon continues to deal with his depression in an honest and relatable way. His meet up with Suzie after his session was just so god damn pure.  It was awkward and strained between them as neither knew exactly what to say about it yet both were desperate to connect in a way that words just couldn’t.  It was perfect.

Then we have Robert romantically described his passion for baby delivering to Rachelle complete with graphic graphic close ups and her responding with dick pics, all the dick pics.  It is charming and gross and funny and explicit and it touches on gender issues and sex psychology and all the things that have come to define “Sex Criminals”.  This scene plays out like a microcosm of the entire series, astonishing because it is entirely without our key players.

Susie is unbelievably charming, as always, and is oblivious to Jon’s struggle with his feelings for her, which seems to be depicted as black box in his subconscious.  Susie is all business as their quest is a little more personal for her, and when they finally achieve the 3x mutual orgasm, the reveal is bizarre and hysterical in a way only Matt and Chip could think up.  The only bad thing about this book is the wait between issues.  As sophomoric and rude as the creators would like us to think it is, this book always manages to impact me in a big way.  It’s really something special and sweet, but don’t tell them I said so.

5 Skull Comic Review: ‘Predator Fire and Stone’ #4 – A Perfect End To Predator’s Best Hunt

bloody disgusting - Wed, 01/28/2015 - 13:03

Reviewed By Torin Chambers: ‘Predator Fire and Stone’ #4 is the epic culmination of Ahab’s hunt for his white whale: the Engineer. Last issue was all about the calm before the storm, building a palpable sense of tension. That tension has now reached a fever pitch with grand conclusion of Fire and Stone within sight. The storm is now upon us, so trust me when I say you’re going to love being to be swept away by it.

WRITTEN BY: Joshua Williamson

ART BY: Chris Mooneyham

PRICE: $3.50

RELEASE: January 28, 2015

Before we get to the fight at hand the very first page finally gives us vague insight into Ahab’s motivations for his hunt to end all hunts. This opening page is incredibly subjective but gives the general sense that this has been a long time coming. Even though last issue I was clamoring for some serious Ahab backstory, I’m personally a big fan of what Williamsons done here. These are two aliens whose lives stretch on much further than ours, who have cultures that are, well, alien to us. Trying to rationalize and put human meaning into their motivations is potentially a fool’s errand. We could never truly grasp the importance of this hunt and what it means to Ahab in the context of his culture. The way Williamson does it gives us the basics that we need, as well as raising the stakes one final time.

With each player at their mark it’s time for the fight to begin. Williamson said at NYCC that this fight would last for most of the issue and he definitely delivers, aside from a small epilogue this issue is all conflict. Now this is by no means a simple, clean fight. This is an utterly brutal brawl, where neither pulls any punches and honor means nothing. Ahab is in it to win it and will do whatever it takes, pull any dirty underhanded move he can to claim victory because his opponent will rip him to shreds given the chance. He’s even willing to put his trust in Galgo if it gives him the upper hand. Being ever the wildcard Galgo could prove to be Ahab’s undoing rather than his savior.

Williamson and Mooneyham hit it out of the park and into the stratosphere, creating a glorious ending to THE BEST Predator story ever. I whole heartedly mean that, no other Predator comic even comes close, trust me I’ve read them all. I’d also count it leagues above Predator 2 and Predators. You could argue the original film is better but I’d say you’re wrong. Unlike the original film Williamson and Mooneyham’s protagonists, Ahab and Galgo, have real character arcs, something Arnold was entirely lacking. Predator has finally been done justice.

The Agonist “My Witness, Your Victim” Video Premiere (Exclusive)

bloody disgusting - Wed, 01/28/2015 - 13:00

Bloody-Disgusting has teamed up with Canadian metal band The Agonist to bring you the exclusive music video premiere for “My Witness, Your Victim”! The new single comes from the band’s upcoming album Eye Of Providence, which hits shelves on February 24th via Century Media Records.

The video shows the band performing in a room that looks like something Dexter would set up before he takes out one of his victims. That footage is interspersed with clips of a gas masked individual wreaking havoc and torture upon an innocent guy, who looks like a hazmat cleaner. No matter the occupation, it doesn’t end well.

Comic Book Review: ‘Clive Barker’s Nightbreed’ #9 Is Must Read Material

bloody disgusting - Wed, 01/28/2015 - 12:40

Reviewed By Jorge Solis: Kicking off in a new story arc, “Clive Barker’s Nightbreed” #9 delivers twisted glee as its pits monsters against humans. Old faces show up in this new direction, which feels like a direct sequel to the cult classic, “Nightbreed.” Taking off where the film ended, the “Nightbreed” series extends its potential and delivers must-read material.

WRITTEN BY: Marc Andreyko

ART BY: Emmanuel Xerx Javier, Devmalya Pramanik

PUBLISHER: Boom! Studios

PRICE: $3.99

RELEASE: January 28, 2015

The cause of Midian’s downfall and the prophetic savior of the breed, Boone must find a new home for his lost tribe. With Lori back from the dead, there may be a chance to leave their old life behind. Lurking in the shadows, Ashberry, a former priest,  damned himself with the blood of Baphomet. A holy war is coming and Boone doesn’t realize an enemy is close behind him.

I enjoyed how writer Marc Andreyko split the narrative evenly, focusing on the lost tribe and Boone’s love life. We’re learning about the changes Lori is going through since her resurrection. Setting his sights on Lori, Ashberry wants revenge for what happened to him. I loved the surprise twist at the end, which could tear Lori and Boone apart.

Remaining hidden against the world, the lost tribe, which includes Peloquin and Kinski, feel abandoned by their leader. They came up with a pseudonym and wrote the best-selling book, “The Nightbreed.” They have all the riches to ask for, but no home to show for it.

Artist Emmanuel Xerx Javier captures Lori’s new eyesight in the opening pages. Like X-Ray vision, she can see through the skin and scan the bone structure. In her character design, Lori still dresses up like an ‘80s child and still has the hairstyle.

In the second subplot, my favorite part of Devmalya Pramanik’s artwork is when the lost tribe heads out during Mardi Gras. Surrounded by men and women in costumes, no one is paying attention to the Breed. In a hilarious panel, a fan dressed up like Peloquin runs up to the real Peloquin; loving his outfit.

Horror fans should not miss out on “Clive Barker’s Nightbreed” #9, which serves as sequel to the movieI cannot wait to read how the Breed, Boone, and Lori deal with Ashberry.

Terrifying ‘It Follows’ Gets Friday the 13th Release!

bloody disgusting - Wed, 01/28/2015 - 11:54

Amazing news, guys, as David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows – already the most anticipated horror film of the year – will now be opening in theaters and on VOD March 13, 2015, giving it a well-deserved Friday the 13th release!

I gave it a perfect score, calling it “a classical horror masterpiece.” Mike Pereira referred to as a creepy, mesmerizing exercise in minimalist horror” when reviewed out of the TIFF last September.

“For 19-year-old Jay (Maika Monroe), the fall should be about school, boys and weekends at the lake. Yet after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter she suddenly finds herself plagued by nightmarish visions; she can’t shake the sensation that someone, or something, is following her. As the threat closes in, Jay and her friends must somehow escape the horrors that are only a few steps behind.”

Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Daniel Zovatto, Jake Weary, Olivia Luccardi and Lili Sepe all star.

Are These the ‘Friday the 13th’ Writers?

bloody disgusting - Wed, 01/28/2015 - 11:47

While we work on getting confirmation, it’s being reported that The Autopsy of Jane Doe duo Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg are currently working on the latest draft of Friday the 13th for Paramount Pictures and Platinum Dunes.

UPDATE (Jan. 28, 12:40PM): Naing and Goldberg are no longer writing the new Friday the 13th, Bloody Disgusting has confirmed, and there is currently no one attached as of this writing.

Yesterday, Paramount delayed the film, pushing it from November of this year to May 13, 2016.

This comes on the heels of news that there wasn’t even a script completed.

Naing and Goldberg were at one point developing the new Friday, which promises to have Jason Voorhees rockin’ his infamous mask.

David Bruckner (The Signal, V/H/S) is at the helm.

bloody disgusting - Wed, 01/28/2015 - 11:34

AMC gave EW three character shots – of Daryl, Eugene, and Rosita – from “The Walking Dead”, which returns Sunday, February 8 at 9pm ET/PT.

There are still no titles revealed, but here’s the synopsis to go with the new images and trailer.

After the tragic events of the mid-season finale–as well as losing the possibility of a cure in Washington, DC–Rick Grimes’ band of survivors find themselves on the road, surviving day to day and trying to hold on to their shredded humanity and dwindling hope.

Stripped of security and without a direction for the future, some of the group near their breaking point, some find themselves hardened and cold and some just try to grasp on to what little they have left.

Though they are still breathing, the line between Rick’s group and the dead is starting to blur.

Could there be anything at this point that brings them back to life?

Now if only they could remove the word “Domino’s” from the ad…

Major ‘Ghostbusters’ Character Details Revealed – Could Bill Murray Return?!

bloody disgusting - Wed, 01/28/2015 - 10:38

I’m still looking out my window thinking I’m going to see some pigs fly by as yesterday a Ghostbusters bomb was dropped. It appears that not only do we have our main cast in place, but there’s also a planned release.

First, mark your calendars for July 22, 2016, at that’s when Columbia Pictures plans to bust some spooks.

Now, let’s talk about the newly minted all-female ‘busters, lead by Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Our friends at Hitfix shared the following inside character info:

“Kristen Wiig is playing Erin Garber, a published author on the subject of the paranormal. Erin now works for Columbia University.

Leslie Jones is playing Abby Bergman, who co-authored the book with Garber. Since publication, the two former colleagues had a falling out and went their separate ways. Abby more actively chases ghost a la Ghost Hunters. This tension between academic investigation (Wiig’s character) and mainstream media investigation (Jones’ character) is central to the story.

Kate McKinnon is playing Abby Berman’s new partner, Jillian.

Melissa McCarthy is playing Patty, an NYC subway worker who stumbles across the main, supernatural threat in the film.”

The site suggests that the casting is tailored to the roles, as opposed to be pigeonholed into one, even though it looks to me like they’ve just emulated the original four ‘busters.

But some really interesting news is that the studio hopes to convince Bill Murray to star as Martin Heiss, “a man who is a professional supernatural debunker who is out to prove that the Ghostbusters are frauds,” while also confirming they hope to land Peter Dinklage, as previously reported, as the main villain, “a creepy mechanical genius.”

Paul Feig is directing the reboot that’s going to be both fun and scary. Oh, and it will be set in New York, thankfully.

Thee Massacre “Drenched In Blood And Sweat” Video Premiere (Exclusive)

bloody disgusting - Wed, 01/28/2015 - 10:00

A few months ago, I introduced you all to Minnesota band Thee Massacre, who take the theatricality of horror and mix it with the heaviness of metal to create something very cinematic, aggressive, and fun. I stated that they would be a “slasher film” if comparing to subgenres.

Now, I’m pretty thrilled to bring you the exclusive music video premiere of “Drenched In Blood And Sweat”, which comes from their EP Horror (out now via Bandcamp).

The video, directed by Elijah Woodcock of Pandemic Pictures, is the tale of a sock puppet who is pushed over the edge and goes on a murderous rampage. It’s bloody, it’s gory, and it’s absolutely ridiculous. Honestly, it reminds me of Meet The Feebles, so if you’re a fan of that movie you definitely need to check out this clip!

The band states:

Thee Massacre would like to thank everyone that participated in the project. It’s been a really fun process. Travis and Jordan our main stars deserve a lot of credit for the effort and performances they put forth. They really made this better than we hoped it could be.

Elijah and Anthony did a great job bringing this goofy idea we had to life. We are more than happy with how everything turned out and are extremely excited to present it to everyone.

We didn’t want to do your conventional metal band video where it’s just intercut shots of each band member. We really wanted to make a story that suits our personalities and makes the audience not only feel the horror movie vibe we try to capture with our music, but to make them laugh as well.

Thee Massacre will be playing a show March 7th at The Triple Rock in Minneapolis MN alongside By The Thousands, Reaping Asmodeia, and From Concept to Chronicles.

Director Woodcock states:

This is by far the most bizarre project I’ve ever been apart of. When the band pitched the idea of a homicidal sock puppet going nuts I didn’t really get it, but my business partner Anthony Cousins was like, “Please lets do this!” As I talked to the band more and they told me they wanted an grind house horror vibe thats when I Jumped in with both feet. I grew up watching I Spit On Your Grave, Pieces, Sleepaway Camp, etc etc. Horror is my genre. My only hope is it is as fun to watch as it was to create.
