Get Comfy With Mezco's New Chucky Collectibles

Dread Central - Thu, 03/06/2014 - 13:30

For several years now Mezco Toyz has been releasing some of the coolest horror collectibles to hit the market. The best part? They're not showing any signs of slowing down. Child's Play fans... get ready to feel your wallet rumble.

Here's your first glimpse of Mezco's “Good Guy” Chucky.

Unlike the scarred and battle-damaged look Chucky normally displays (people have tried to destroy him in 6 films so far), this version represents the cleaner, earlier Chucky. His trademark outfit is un-slashed, his face is not yet mauled. Just as he did in his films, Chucky has lots to say, from his trademark “My name is Chucky” to far more sinister phrases. The star of the Child’s Play films, Chucky stands 15″ tall and features real cloth Good Guys clothing, 11 points of articulation, and his trademark orange hair and realistic glass-like eyes.

Each Chucky comes packaged in his own collector-friendly window box based on the original box design seen in the films.

That not enough? Then check out these Chucky and Tiffany 16-inch plush figures. Not since Bonnie and Clyde has a couple left such a path of destruction in their wake!

Chucky, the homicidal doll who contains the spirit of Charles Lee Ray, a serial killer better known as “The Lakeshore Strangler,” is joined by his beloved Tiffany, the doll who contains the soul of his longtime paramour, a misguided and equally homicidal aspiring actress. Chucky and Tiffany are not only one of the most deadly onscreen couples; they are one of the most talkative as well! Both Chucky and Tiffany each speak 7 terrifying phrases, direct from their films.

Both plush figures feature real cloth clothing: Chucky in his well known coveralls and sneakers and Tiffany in her fashion-forward wedding gown. Tiffany also sports her trademark tattoo. Each plush figure stands 16 inches tall and comes with an informative hang tag.

Chucky and Tiffany are each sold separately, but even death couldn’t keep them apart.

[Tribeca '14] Midnight Titles Include 'Zombeavers,' 'Preservation,' 'Extraterrestrial' and More!

bloody disgusting - Thu, 03/06/2014 - 13:00

The Tribeca Film Festival today announced its feature film selections in the Spotlight, Midnight, and Special Screenings sections, as well as the selections for the Storyscapes program. The 13th edition of the Festival will take place from April 16th to April 27th in New York City.

What do alien invaders and chupacabras have in common with a sword-wielding maniac and the ghost of a turn-of-the-century murderer? They can all be found in Tribeca’s 2014 Midnight program, a collection of this year’s most boundary-pushing genre films from around the globe. Opening Night selection, Preservation, is a moody, intelligent take on the maniac in the woods genre, and an apt foreshadowing of the slew of inhuman baddies that emerge from the darkness to terrify sexed-up teens in Extraterrestrial, Indigenous, and sure-to-be-a-conversation-piece special screening, Zombeavers. Meanwhile, a rookie cop takes on his deranged doppelganger in bizarre German horror-cum-arthouse film, Der Samurai, while the conflict takes a team turn in Intramural, a wacky romp about an underdog flag football team that riffs on classic sports movies with a cartoonish comedic sensibility. Too terrifying, strange, or downright hilarious for daylight hours, these seven films wear their Midnight Movie moniker with pride.

MIDNIGHT The Canal

Directed and written by Ivan Kavanagh. (Ireland) – World Premiere, Narrative.

Film archivist David and his wife are perfectly happy—or so he believes. When a looming secret shatters their marriage at the same time as a turn-of-the-century film reel he is studying reveals their house to be the site of a 1902 multiple-murder

David begins to unravel, and the house’s eerie history threatens to repeat itself. Dripping with tension and chilling to the core, this visceral Irish ghost story is a visually arresting and genuinely shocking journey into the darkness within.

Der Samurai

Directed and written by Till Kleinert. (Germany) – International Premiere, Narrative.

A samurai-wielding figure wearing a white dress lurks menacingly in the forest, waiting to descend upon an unsuspecting village in the muddy backwaters of rural East Germany. As heads roll with each stroke of his sword. Dutiful, straight-laced cop Jakob becomes increasingly powerless to resist the draw of the Samurai’s feral otherness. The two enter into a bizarre folie à deux as Jakob is forced to confront his own carnal impulses that he has long sought to repress.

Extraterrestrial

Directed by Colin Minihan, written by The Vicious Brothers. (Canada) – World Premiere, Narrative.

The Vicious Brothers (Grave Encounters) return to Tribeca with their latest heart-pumping thriller. Five friends set out to a cabin in the woods for a fun weekend getaway—that is, until extraterrestrial visitors turn it into a fight for their lives. The group is pulled from their reverie when a flickering object crashes deep in the woods. As they investigate, the friends stumble across an alien spacecraft, and its inhabitants have not arrived in peace.

Indigenous

Directed by Alastair Orr, written by Max Roberts. (USA) – World Premiere, Narrative.

A group of five American friends on the cusp of adulthood travel to Panama to relax and reconnect. They befriend a local woman in their hotel bar—and despite some ominous whispers—she goes against the specific instructions of her brother and brings the Americans on a daytrip into the pristine falls at the nearby jungle. What begins as an innocent outing to a picturesque waterfall quickly turns terrifying after she suddenly goes missing. As night closes in, the friends realize too late the truth behind the rumors—the legendary, blood-sucking Chupacabra is now stalking them.” In English and Spanish with subtitles.

Intramural

Directed by Andrew Disney, written by Bradley Jackson. (USA) – World Premiere, Narrative.

There comes a time in every fifth-year senior’s life where they must either accept the impending ‘real world’ of jobs, marriage, and payment plans or shirk that responsibility in favor of playing the most glorious intramural football game your school probably doesn’t really care to see. In this full throttle and hilarious send-up of inspirational sports movies

Director Andrew Disney harnesses every cliché and overused trope to tell the greatest (and only) intramural sports movie of all time.” Featuring an ensemble cast including Kate MacKinnon, Jay Pharoah, Beck Bennett, and Nikki Reed.

Preservation

Directed and written by Christopher Denham, (USA) – World Premiere, Narrative.

Three family members head deep into the woods for a hunting trip that doubles as a distraction from their troubles at home. When all of their gear is stolen, they turn on each other, but soon realize there are much more treacherous forces at work. Actor Christopher Denham takes his second turn in the director’s chair with this finely crafted horror-thriller starring Pablo Schreiber (The Wire, Orange is the New Black), Aaron Staton (Mad Men), and Wrenn Schmidt (Boardwalk Empire).

Zombeavers

Directed and written by Jordan Rubin, co-written by Al Kaplan and Jon Kaplan. (USA) – World Premiere, Narrative.

You know the story: sexy teens head to a secluded lakeside cabin for a weekend of debauched fun, only to be menaced by a mysterious force picking them off one by one. But here, the culprit proves to be a horde of rabid zombie beavers! The B-movie creature feature is making a comeback, and with 2 million views of its trailer in its first two weeks alone, Zombeavers is a veritable phenomenon. And it’s finally here.” Special midnight screening.

Devin Townsend Posts Incredible "Willy Wanka" Medley

bloody disgusting - Thu, 03/06/2014 - 11:20

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Devin Townsend. The man is not only a genius songwriter and a brilliant guitar player but he’s also one of the nicest and most genuine guys I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing. He’s really something out of this world and the day that he stops making music is going to be a truly devastating day for the industry.

But let’s not think morosely here, shall we? Instead, let’s celebrate just how awesome Townsend is with a new video that was posted by EMGpickupsTV that shows the crazed musician playing through a nearly 11 minute medley entitled “Willy Wanka”. It’s super enjoyable to watch simply because of how dynamic the piece is. It goes from ambient beauty with lush reverbs and spacious delays to crunchy distorted madness and back again. And what’s even better is that it’s 100% obvious how much Townsend is enjoying himself. He performs for the camera, he smiles along with the music, he not only taps his feet but moves his whole body to the music. This is a man who has given himself entirely into what he does and it’s inspiring.

Go on below. Give it a watch. If you haven’t checked out Devin and his work before, let today be the start of an amazing journey for you.

[BD Review] 'Dark House' Is a Berserk Blend of Horror Tropes (In a Good Way)

bloody disgusting - Thu, 03/06/2014 - 10:31

Jeepers Creepers director Victor Salva is back with another horror flick, and goddamn he throws A LOT of stuff into this one. Dark House is a whirlwind of twists, gore, and cliches all packaged up in a demented tale of rural carnage. Many of the bits and pieces of the narrative are familiar, but Salva puts these tropes to good use to shape his own brand of terror. Although it doesn’t always work, there are enough fun moments to make Dark House one to watch, especially thanks to its berserk second half.

The movie is longer than it needs to be by about 15 minutes because there is so freaking much going on. In particular, there are some hammy scenes of melodrama that don’t fit and make the dash to the finish line feel a little clumsy. These hiccups distract from the main narrative as well, which is absolutely bonkers and requires no side romance bullshit.

Nick Di Santo is a young, disturbed individual. He’s cursed with the power of premonition. If he touches someone, he can sometimes see their death. His mother is locked up in an asylum, which burns to the ground shortly after he visits her. She leaves Nick an old mansion, so he packs up two buddies and his pregnant girlfriend to go check it out. But first they have to find it.

The locals claim the house was destroyed in a flood years back, but there’s an urban legend about it still intact somewhere deep in the woods. As they’re looking for it, Nick and co. cross paths with a team of land surveyors who show them the way. Once they find the house, the movie unravels a barrage of well-worn horror material, including biblical demons, a creepy cellar, and the titular haunted house. There’s also Tobin Bell of Saw fame playing the creepy caretaker, who may or may not have Nick’s best intentions in mind.

While there’s a lot of familiar territory here, Dark House‘s story plays out in a way I didn’t see coming. When Salva makes this cliche cornucopia work, he makes it work really, really well. I especially dug the axe-wielding henchmen – they’re good for a few nightmares. At times the story is in danger of coming off the rails, but overall it’s a decent tale that’s certainly one of the most original haunted house films I’ve seen recently. Because right when I thought I had it figured out, Salva throws seven curve balls at once.

When the film pulls back from its horror core, it does stumble a bit. Like I mentioned earlier, there’s some melodrama thrown in that feels terribly forced. Those parts could’ve been shaved to create a tighter narrative. But overall Dark House is a fun horror romp that uses its many influences to create its own monster.

Cinedigm is releasing Dark House on VOD and home video on March 14.

bloody disgusting - Thu, 03/06/2014 - 09:45

Japanese alt-metal band Dir En Grey have released a trailer for their upcoming live Blu/DVD Tour13 Ghoul. This will be the band’s 4th live concert DVD and will be released April 23.

The description reads, It has been 15 years since Dir En Grey made their spectacular debut, and they are still continuing to progress. Dir En Grey has just announced their fourth video documentary, TOUR13 GHOUL, with footage that documents Dir En Grey face to face with reality, will be released on April 23, 2014. It features their domestic headlining tour beginning at Yokohama Blitz on September 18, 2013, where Kyo revealed his self-created, skull-like make-up that gave him the appearance of a ghoul starved for human flesh. The tour’s stage production invited audiences into the world of Dir En Grey, while the band followed their instincts and laid themselves bare for the crowds. The documentary also includes their month-long American tour, from the fatal shooting at LAX on November 1 for which Dir En Grey were present, to the looming possibility of cancelling shows due to a tour bus breakdown. The three months of filming captures on video anxiety about their new challenges, unimaginable realities, and a ray of hope at the end of hardship. Why take the stage? – This is the film that documents the five members who repeatedly ponder this unanswerable question and fight their way through difficulty. Don’t miss their words and feelings from the inside.

I’m a fan of this band and really enjoyed their last album, Dum Spiro Spero, so I’ll be keep on checking this out. You can watch the trailer below.

In the film, “Crescent Bay is not the ideal place to spend one’s golden years, especially since the once-idyllic retirement community has been beset by a series of deadly animal attacks from the ominous forest surrounding it. When grizzled war veteran Ambrose McKinley (Nick Damici) is forced into moving there by his yuppie son Will (Ethan Embry), the residents immediately take offense to Ambrose’s abrasive personality. But that take-no-prisoners attitude may be just what Ambrose needs to survive as it becomes clear that the attacks are being caused by creatures that are neither animal nor man, and that the tight-knit community of Crescent Bay is hiding something truly sinister in its midst…

[Exclusive] RPWL's Kalle Wallner Shares His Top 5 Horror Movies!

bloody disgusting - Wed, 03/05/2014 - 18:00

If you haven’t checked out German progressive rock band RPWL, I highly recommend giving them a listen. They hearken back to the days of Pink Floyd, Kansas, Yes, etc… Y’know, that classic era of prog that is remembered so fondly?

The reason I reminisce so much is because it feels like guitarist Kalle Wallner took that feeling I get from RPWL and created a Top 5 Horror Movies list from it. The films he’s chosen are throwbacks to some of the great classics, movies that inspired and influenced countless others that followed them. For those of you who are fans of older horror, this is the perfect list for you! Check it out below.

Make sure to pre-order the band’s upcoming album Wanted right here.

Tarantula
When I was a kid I was very scared of spiders. On evening I was watching TV alone and I zapped through the TV stations. Suddenly there was this huge spider on the screen and I was horrified. Of course ridiculous but I will never forget this moment.

Nosferatu the Vampyire
I’ve been a big fan of the German actor Klaus Kinski for years. This movie is funny in a way but Kinski is doing such a great job. Awesome!

The Raven
“Quoth the raven: Nevermore.” What a quote… an Vincent Price is amazing!

Pit And The Pendulum
Another film with Vincent Price. It’s a brilliant story that does’nt need all those modern effects. Just a story.

Frankenstein (1931)
For me Boris Karloff was the best of all the Frankenstein’s monsters. You never forget his face and his typical gestures.
