'Orphanage' Director Dreams Up 'A Monster Calls'

River Road Entertainment, Participant Media, Lionsgate International, and Focus Features have teamed to finance and distribute Apache’s production of The Orphanage director Juan Antonio Bayona’s next film, A Monster Calls, based on the award-winning children’s fantasy novel by Patrick Ness (the “Chaos Walking” trilogy).

The film will be produced by Belen Atienza (The Impossible, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Orphanage) and is slated for a fall 2016 release.

It will be distributed by Focus Features domestically, Universal Pictures International for its theatrical and home entertainment release in Spain and Lionsgate International throughout the rest of the world.

“A Monster Calls is a visually spectacular drama about a young boy who attempts to deal with his mother’s illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that deal with courage, loss and faith.

Ness wrote the novel based on an original idea by the late Siobhan Dowd, and he and illustrator Jim Kay won Britain’s prestigious Carnegie Medal and Greenaway Medal in 2012, presented to the year’s best children’s literature in the UK. Ness is adapting the screenplay from his novel.

Lionsgate Hears 'The Voices', Nabs Ryan Reynold-Starrer!

Having just premiered in the out-of-competition section of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival this past January, Lionsgate has acquired U.S rights to The Voices, a genre film starring Amityville Horror‘s Ryan Reynolds.

Directed by Marjane Satrapi, and also starring Gemma Arterton, Anna Kendrick and Jacki Weaver, “This genre-bending tale centers around Jerry Hickfang, a lovable but disturbed factory worker who yearns for attention from a woman in accounting. When their relationship takes a sudden, murderous turn, Jerry’s evil talking cat and benevolent talking dog lead him down a fantastical path where he ultimately finds salvation.

No word on release plans just yet. Watch this spot for official details soon.

NBC wants to know if you’ve caught the season premiere of “Hannibal,” and has thus shared the following new promo poster.

The series continues Friday with Episode 2.2, “Sakizuki”. “The case of the human soup becomes clearer when a victim that has escaped from the killer’s clutches washes downstream after a deadly fall, leaving valuable evidence for the BAU team to uncover. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) assists on the case, sniffing out clues of his own from of the victim’s body. Meanwhile, Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) begins a plan of manipulation from within the asylum, set on proving his own innocence. Hannibal is able to put the clues together before the BAU team, arriving at the killer’s silo and helping him to carry out his fascinating, yet deadly tableau…just not in the way the killer intended. Jack (Laurence Fishburne) tries to deal with his guilt over not protecting Will and submits to mandated therapy after Alana Bloom’s (Caroline Dhavernas) scathing report. To Jack’s surprise the counseling turns out to be beneficial. The BAU team independently arrives at the silo, finding a human tapestry of forty-seven bodies patched together, the killer hidden in plain sight. Awaiting his upcoming trial, Will is surprised by an unexpected guest—Bedelia du Maurier (Gillian Anderson)—who gives him a much-needed boost to his psyche.

The episode also stars Hettienne Park and Aaron Abrams.

World Premiering at the SXSW Film Festival, this trailer strikes a nerve…

The trailer for Leigh Janiak’s Honeymoon has been shared with Bloody Disgusting, and it’s a work of art in itself. What’s so interesting is that it doesn’t really offer any plot details, but uses a lack of music and intense sound design to get under the viewer’s skin. This is seriously a remarkable teaser.

Young newlyweds Paul (Harry Treadaway) and Bea (Rose Leslie) travel to remote lake country for their honeymoon where the promise of private romance awaits them. Shortly after arriving, Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of the night. As she becomes more distant and her behavior increasingly peculiar, Paul begins to suspect something more sinister than sleepwalking took place in the woods.

The pic stars Rose Leslie, Harry Treadaway, Ben Huber, and Hanna Brown.

Honeymoon premieres at the Austin-based fest on Friday (March 7) at 11:45pm at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz.

IFC Finds 'Alien Abduction' Footage, Shares in First Trailer!

IFC Midnight has officially announced Matty Beckerman’s Alien Abduction, a found-footage horror film we excessively broke the news on back in 2011.

In select theaters and VOD platforms Friday, April 4, we now have the film’s official trailer and poster.

In the pic, “A vacationing family encounters an alien threat in this pulse-pounding thriller based on the real-life Brown Mountain Lights phenomenon in North Carolina.

Katherine Sigismund, Corey Eid, Jillian Clare, Peter Holden, Riley Polanski star.

The film is produced by Shark Night 3D, Hostel, Hostel: Part II and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)‘s Mike Fleiss and Reservoir Dogs‘ Lawrence Bender.

Sleepaway Camp's Jonathan Tiersten Releases Music Video

Remember Ricky from Sleepaway Camp? Well, the actor who portrayed him, Jonathan Tiersten, is all grown up and has just released a music video for his track “The Princess”, which was Directed by Mel Haynes, Jr. The song comes from Tiersten’s upcoming album Family.

Haynes Jr on working with Jonathan Tiersten and directing “The Princess”: “We met at JTs house and sat in his kitchen for a while and just talked about a bunch of random things while I played with his dogs. It was a great moment for me because I got to know him better and what a cool guy he was. He was no longer the actor from Sleepaway Camp and other movies and was now someone I felt a friendship with. That completed the image I needed to get the theme of the video. I finally knew the man behind the music, which is what I needed to capture the essence of the video.

Tiersten explains, “When I hear music that moves me I see different colors and images in my mind. Videos seemed to be a dumbing down of the listening experience. I think some good bands may have actually suffered because of the nature of their videos. It made them seem dumb and shallow despite their music being anything but (see Men at Work). So for twenty years I avoided, obfuscated, deterred and detracted. The question became, how do I make a video that doesn’t do all of the things I have heretofore mentioned that I hate about videos?

I instilled the help of my friend Groovey from Groovey.TV. He got me in touch with filmmaker Mel Haynes Jr. We had a week to get it done and I told him all of my concerns. I told him I hated any kind of lip-syncing. We came to a compromise. The video would be representational only in a way that a song is representational. It inspires you to think and come to your own conclusions. In my first foray into this medium (outside of acting) I must say I couldn’t be more pleased. Enjoy!

[SXSW '14] New Trailer For 'Oculus' Goes Behind the Looking Glass!

A new poster and stills, along with a full length trailer for the Mike Flanagan-directed (Absentia, Ghosts of Hamilton Street) horror flick Oculus has just hit – and it looks like it has the chance to be pretty damn scary. I’ll be seeing the film and interviewing the filmmakers this week at SXSW but the rest of you don’t have long to wait since Relativity is releasing it nationwide April 11th.

Mike Pereira raved about the film out of the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. It stars Karen Gillan (Doctor Who, Not Another Happy Ending), Brenton Thwaites (the upcoming Maleficent and The Giver), Rory Cochrane (Argo, Parkland) and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica, Riddick).

Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents’ deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force­­ unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. Determined to prove Tim’s innocence, Kaylie tracks down the mirror, only to learn similar deaths have befallen previous owners over the past century. Review: “Veil” # 1

“Veil” is a beautiful book soaked in mystery and subdued neon. The characters are bold with poetic and haunting dialogue it’s the type of book that pulls you into the abyss of human behavior. Centered on a enigmatic girl who wakes up in the subway with ridiculous strength and a constant rhyming ramble. Its goading is irresistible.

Thank you, Scott Allie. We can now breath a sigh of relief as Greg Rucka has his first project from Dark Horse. “Veil” is amazing. The book simultaneously evokes an eerie sense of wonder and dread. As you witness Veil wake up and wander through the city you feel her plight. Almost everyone she encounters sees her as an object, except for Dante, her knight in shining cornrows.

Together they begin a journey into the very nature of Veil’s existence. Who she is and what she’s capable of are only briefly teased in this debut issue. It’s enough of a taste to engage the mystery. She’s dangerous, beautiful, and oddly entrancing. It’s a recipe for certain disaster.

Toni Fejzula’s art paints the whole ordeal in a bold and alluring style. His art has a dream like quality that is soaked in soft neon. Every panel looks like a stained glass window. He uses hard edges to create texture and detail. Everything feels beautifully dreamlike and inviting. Which only adds to Veil’s magnetism. This dream like quality is applied to the most unsavory of neighborhoods. Everything that happens in this first chapter is soaked in vulgarity. The environment is threatening but inviting thanks to the color. The characters are vile, but seductive. You feel like Veil, lost in the wild tapestry of colors and unsure of who to trust. You almost want to stand still to take it all in.

Once you look into Veil’s enormous warm eyes its impossible not to fall in love. You’ll join Dante in wanting to help her. Rucka reminds us that this siren is as deadly as she is beautiful. She’s not just an object, she’s a person, and she’s capable of great things. She’s lost, seemingly in her own mind. Rebuilding to who she once was. I’m afraid of what she might become, but entranced at the same time. I can’t wait to see what comes next, and gaze upon Fejzula’s incredible work yet again. There is such symmetry between the art and script that I’m already dying for the next chapter.

“Veil” has the perfect combination of art and story. One could not exist without the other. Together Rucka and Fejzula create a waking dream centered on a captivating and mysterious character. It’s tightly paced, hypnotic, and impossible to read once.

Former 'Lords Of Shadow 2' Devs Detail Game's Troubled Development

Looks like MercurySteam, developer of the newly released — and incredibly disappointingCastlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 has a few disgruntled former employees. Several devs have been taking to threads on NeoGAF to air their grievances, which mostly revolve around the studio’s poor management, and specifically with studio director Enric Alvarez.

Alvarez recently called out Edge magazine for their score of the game (a 4 out of 10), saying “One must be blind or stupid to give it a 4/10″. I’d say that lends a fair amount of credibility to these claims right there.

In a report by VadeJuegos, the anonymous posts on NeoGAF were validated by current MercurySteam devs.

As for the posts, they don’t paint a very pretty picture of the studio.

“The vast majority of this team is aware that the game we’ve done is a real piece of shit that has nothing to do with the first one’s quality and production values,” wrote one dev. “Nobody is surprised by the low reviews we’ve got.”

The developer goes so far as to say they even anticipated the low reviews.

These issues were worsened by extremely poor management, which resulted in very little communication with the team. Apparently, some of the people who were working on the game didn’t find out about new features until they were covered by the press.

“There weren’t any meetings. We found out things lots of times by the press.” the dev explained.

The complaints go on, shedding light on their reaction to the stealth segments — an awful idea that came very close to ruining the game for me on a few occasions — and “Frankenstein” quality, thanks to the weird decision to set the game in two very different worlds (i.e. the fantasy world and present day).

MercurySteam clearly has a talented team, so it’s unfortunate to hear about drama like this. The first Lords of Shadow is a fantastic game that’s still very much worth playing, and while I can’t say the same for its sequel, hopefully something was gleaned from all of this that can be used to improve the internal culture at this studio.

Advance Review: “Art Monster” # 2

“Art Monster” #2 beautifully deals with the nature of the struggling artist who wants to say something valid, but who’s mind can’t decide what that thing is. Holt grounds this struggle in drunkenness. Victor embraces disorder and lets his mind wander. In a moment of desperation and clarity Victor finds the inspiration he needs: death.

Perfection, belonging, expectations, pride, and shame are just some of the things facing an artist who’s stuck between creations. Victor succumbs to a volatile mix of it all. He’s lost without passion, in between the projects desperately searching for something that invigorates him. That thing that fills him with a certain electricity to create but he can’t find it. At least not until he’s laying face up on the floor regurgitating his alcohol.

If issue one was about being lost, then issue two is about finding the spark. Grabbing an idea and holding on as it carries you into a dark and unfamiliar place. Victor has found his reflex. His reason to create, and he’s better for it. His relationships have a new charm to them. His posture has straightened and he’s on a mission. He’s even found a partner who looks invested in his dark and provocative vision.

Ciregia does a great job at adjusting the art in tune with Victor’s character. The first chunk of the issue has Victor lost in darkness. The panels are drenched in heavy contrast that almost envelops Victor in every panel. When he has his shift of inspiration, the art makes a bright and inviting change. Victor has a new posture, the panels embrace white space and the book gives you room to breath.

The issue is briskly paced like the process that inspires it. You get whisked away on Victor’s newfound enthusiasm. Even if its not quite clear what he’s up to just yet. However, the vision is there. He has an idea and it is empowering him. He has something to say, and better yet he has something to prove. He’s about to make an argument, and as we’ve seen from the last issue he can be a pretty argumentative guy.

His next move is unpredictable to a point. We’re given a beautiful tease of Victor’s descent into artistic madness, and it seems he’s got just the right person in his corner to help. Although he doesn’t recognize that good art will destroy just as it will create. It seems he’s about to cut a path through his school that people won’t soon forget.

If you’ve ever been a struggling artist you’ll find much solace in “Art Monster” and if you just like good horror, you’ll find plenty of that here too.

Review: “Drumhellar” # 5

Well if you were expecting “Drumhellar” to close out its first arc with a bevy of answers you will be sorely disappointed. Instead Riley Rossmo and Alex Link bring a new level of appreciation to the story by reveling in the cosmic unknown. This isn’t a story about answers. Instead its an experiment in the nature of existence and the role stories have in coming to define us.

So that was a surprising read. Alex Link and Riley Rossmo have been sowing seeds of cosmic weirdness for five months now. I expected a long a convoluted story that tied the characters together and tried to explain the wackiness that is so deeply rooted in the book. Instead “Drumhellar” earns my praise for ignoring all of this in service of a more metaphysical look at the mechanics of story and life itself.

Drum feels enlightened in a world of idiots. He pushes past the veil of “reality” and sees the true nature of the world. It clearly takes a toll on his sanity. Yet, his conviction empowers him to have a deeper understanding of existence.

The script plays with this idea. We’ve entered a world of weird. Dinosaurs can talk and werewolves are commonplace. Rossmo explores this strange state of being with enveloping art and vibrant colors that push the book into a conceptual place of its own. It has built its own neon soaked reality where anything is possible and the strangest problems might have the easiest solutions.

The beautiful simplicity is what drew me to this issue the most. In my time with Drumhellar I’ve been waiting for the big exposition dump that comes to define how this world works and why it is filled with mysticism, the supernatural, and just what Drum’s role in the entire thing is. Turns out, it just is.

Rossmo and Link are perfectly comfortable selling their world as is, and frankly the book is infinitely better for it. Maybe the answers are just lying around the corner, maybe they are far off, and maybe they don’t even exist. Whatever the context, “Drumhellar” concludes its first arc in a courageous and thought-provoking manner that is sure to leave you salivating for the second chapter.

Review: ‘Grindhouse: Doors Open At Midnight’ # 6

The doors close on the third arc of ‘Grindhouse: Doors Open At Midnight.’ This month sees yet another blood soaked descent into madness. The issue is jam packed with typical De Campi charm and topped with a flair for the theatrical. “Bride of Blood” doesn’t shy away from the grisly details. Artist Federica Manfredi shows the brutal reality of medieval death in all it’s disgusting glory.

Anyone who has talked to me recently knows I love this comic. I mean it’s every grindhouse fan’s dream come true. De Campi knows the history of this particular film subculture and smartly shifts between genres while keeping a trashy vibe throughout. “Bride of Blood” continues the tradition flawlessly. De Campi heavily entrenches herself in the medieval world as if its second nature. The savagery of the time lends itself well to the violence this comic flaunts. This is the story of revenge. The barbaric bastards who aimed to destroy a wedding actually created a monster and this month our bride gets what she seeks most.

Visually Manfredi is a gift to the medieval world. She understands the scenery and the characters of the time. Yet, the true magic comes with the gore. Things are brutal here. The script or the panels don’t shy away from incredible and horrific detail. The scene with the pack of dogs is sure to make your skin crawl.

With all that being said the story does feel particularly flimsy. Revenge stories are often simple tales with clear goals. However, we never really spent enough time with any of the characters to understand what they want outside of revenge. It’s strange, because previous chapters of this book were able to balance character and plot almost seamlessly.

However, if you’re just looking for a gory good time then look no further. This month’s story doesn’t deliver much in the way of thought provoking narrative, but it does push the creepy up to eleven. The bride is staggeringly awesome in her suit of armor. She is cool, calm, and collected. She is a killing machine. So it’s a beautiful thing to watch her exact her revenge. Failure is never an option and you don’t feel it for a second. The end of the story is haunting, and just the right amount of horrendous that you’ve come to expect from this title.

De Campi has a certain relentless talent for shameless violence and gratuitous nudity that commands the page. Her understanding of grindhouse conventions allow her to play with expectations in ways you could never imagine, and she actually elevates her stories to a level the stories that inspired them could never reach. “Bride of Blood” may not be the best chapter, but it proves she hasn’t run out of ways to shock and disgust.

Rating: 3/5 Skulls.

People Keep Killing Themselves In This New 'SOMA' Trailer

The folks in Amnesia developer Frictional Games’ survival horror game SOMA seem to have it pretty rough. Nothing but complaints from these people. “People are dying,” “Machines tried to eat my face,” nothing but whine, whine, whine. In this latest trailer for the upcoming game — due sometime next year — we get to eavesdrop on another conversation being had. Apparently, lots of folks are committing suicide.

SOMA is slated to release on PC and PS4 in 2015 — in fact, it made our list of 2015′s most exciting horror games. You should check that out. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of time.

Titan Brings A Range Of European Graphic Novels To North America

It all started when Titan Comics acquired the rights to bring the English translation of “Snow Piercer” to North America, a book we’ve been waiting to read for three decades (review here). Now, Titan continues their awesome initiative to bring in more well-known European comics, the first of which are “Elric: The Ruby Throne” and “Void”.

“Elic: The Ruby Throne” is the first collected edition of an adaptation of comics featuring Michael Moorcock’s infamous character, Elric. “Void” is a sci-fi thriller from the minds of Sean Phillips and Herik Hanna. Both are expected to ship in September, with a wave of other Euro books to follow. Check out all the details below.

[Exclusive] Fine Fine Titans "Dance Of The Omega" Music Video Premiere

Last week, Fine Fine Titans vocalist Jennifer Bartlett shared with us her Top 5 Women In Horror list. It’s a fantastic list as it named women that aren’t the standard, go-to, mainstream choices, such as Jamie Lee Curtis or Danielle Harris. It’s the list of a true horror fan, one who watches more than the famous titles and digs deeper into the underbelly of our beloved genre.

Now we get to see Jennifer as a representative of her own craft, a fierce frontwoman of a post-hardcore band that aims to grip you by the throat and make sure you don’t leave without some bruises that’ll require a lot of explanation the next day.

To that end, we’re bringing you the exclusive music video premiere of the band’s latest single “Dance Of The Omega”, which was edited, produced, and directed by Three Goats Moving Pictures. The video mixes performance footage with a strange, animal costume filled surreal journey. Give it a view down below and make sure to keep your eyes and ears open for their upcoming Omega EP!

From inception to completion, this was one of the most entertaining videos to shoot. The band made the process fun and seamless, and we are now honored to call them our friends.

Fine Fine Titans:
The concept of this video was driven strictly by the lyrics…we wanted to portray a group of people who were physically taken hostage to represent the emotional damage caused by those who held power over them. The animal costumes helped to reflect on the core of the song and hide the faces of the individuals, thus making the characters more elusive.

The Haunted Show Off Their Studio Puppy...And Talk About Their New Album

Swedish metal band The Haunted have issued a studio update as they are in the midst of recording their 8th studio album, which will be the follow up to 2011′s Unseen. The band is recording this with their revamped band line-up, featuring founding members Jonas Björler (Bass) and Jensen (Guitars), returning members Adrian Erlandsson (Drums) and Marco Aro (Vocals), and the newest member Ola Englund (Guitars).

The as-yet-untitled album will be produced by Tue Madsen (Dark Tranquillity, Sick Of It All). The album is tentatively scheduled for release late this summer.

Here you go, folks; picture proof of the cursed, grueling, back-breaking yet eventually immensely rewarding process of recording an album. How about Tue’s use of an empty pool for that special reverb effect!? You can’t buy that shit as a plug-in (Hey…Wait a minute…Maybe you can?). Anyway, recording might be hard, strenuous work, but it’s always relaxing to have producer wizard, and great friend, R-Tue-D-Tue on board. We love both him and his studio dog Maud.

The songs all sound great, and it seems that we’re looking at the embryo to a pretty fast album. We’re hoping you won’t mind the velocity when you pop the CD into the player with your dirty little mitts.

And yup, we’ve released the bands that’ll open for us on our Scandinavian dates. Be sure to get there on time to check them out!

'Happy Camp' Has A Super Scary Bathroom (Exclusive Clip)

Gravitas Ventures gave Bloody an exclusive on the first official clip for the under-the-radar found-footage thriller Happy Camp, produced by Drew Barrymore‘s Flower Films banner and directed by first-timer Josh Anthony who stars in, wrote and directed the pic.

Starring Michael Barbuto, Anne Taylor, and Teddy Gilmore, “The story of four filmmaker friends who visit the Northern California town of Happy Camp where hundreds of people have gone missing from the surrounding mountains, including one of the pals’ younger siblings decades ago, to film a documentary.

Gravitas has a VOD release set for March 25.

Original Tool Bassist's New Project Announces EP Info

Paul D’Amour, the original bassist for progressive rock/metal band Tool, seemed like he was out of the game for a while after his departure before Aenima‘s release. However, he resurfaced in 2012 with the fantastic Feersum Ennjin self-titled debut, which is an album you definitely need to check out if you haven’t heard it.

Now D’Amour is back with a new project called Lesser Key, which also features Andrew Zamudio, Brett Fanger, and Justin Hanson. The band will be releasing their debut EP on April 1st via Sumerian Records. It was produced by Sylvia Massy, who has worked with System Of A Down, Johnny Cash, and, fittingly enough, Tool. Below is a teaser clip of several songs from the EP.
