SXSW 2014: Robert Rodriguez's Museum Featuring Original Frank Frazetta Masterpieces Launches on Location!

Dread Central - Fri, 03/07/2014 - 12:00

There's so much cool stuff happening at SXSW 2014, it's hard to know where to begin. That being said, if you're one of the lucky ones who are attending the event, here's something you DON'T want to miss!

From the Press Release
For a limited time only during SXSW 2014, Robert Rodriguez is proud to launch a museum featuring his own specially curated collection of art which includes the work of celebrated American artist Frank Frazetta.

Considered to be the most influential fantasy artist in history, Frazetta contributed iconic artwork to classic works of fiction for Conan the Barbarian, Tarzan, and John Carter of Mars among others. The gallery will be open to the public daily from Saturday, March 8th, to Sunday, March 16th, from 12 Noon-8 PM. The museum is located at 920 Congress Ave. in Austin, TX. The gallery will have a $20 entrance fee benefiting the Frazetta Estate's preservation of the art for a new Frank Frazetta museum.

The gallery will also feature an original SIN CITY masterpiece by FRANK MILLER, original art by DREW STRUZAN including his rendering of Sylvester Stallone for the movie poster FIRST BLOOD, and original poster art for THE THING. Original paintings by New Pop Art master SEBASTIAN KRÜGER including hyper real paintings of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, and Danny Trejo. Bronzed art sculptures from CLETE SHIELDS. Shields' work has been commissioned by Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, and Samuel L. Jackson.

In addition, the gallery will feature SIN CITY character self-portrait paintings from cast members including Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lady Gaga, Rosario Dawson, and Josh Brolin painted with Robert and his mentor, artist George Yepes, during the making of SIN CITY 2. There will also be a selection of hand-numbered giclée prints of Frazetta pieces photographed and printed by Robert Rodriguez available for purchase. Proceeds from the prints will benefit the Frazetta Estate to preserve the art for a new Frank Frazetta Museum.

The idea for the museum has been long in the making. Robert Rodriguez has been touring Frank Frazetta original art at Comic-Con and Wizard Con to continue the wish of Frank Frazetta, a friend and collaborator of Robert's who always wanted audiences to see his paintings in person. The original Frazetta museum in upstate New York closed after the passing of Frank Frazetta in 2010. The new Rodriguez museum features other world-class artists Robert has also worked with and studied under over the years with art that he's collected himself and others that are on exclusive loan for this event. The FRANK FRAZETTA COLLECTION has an unprecedented amount of original masterpieces including Death Dealer, Egyptian Queen, At the Earth's Core, Conan, and Dark Kingdom as well a rare painting Frazetta did for the movie FROM DUSK TILL DAWN among others. There are 12 masterpieces total.

"This has to be the most kick-ass museum in the world," said filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. "For one, it's the only place you can see original Frank Frazetta art, 12 masterpiece paintings total, alongside original art by Frank Miller, Drew Struzan, Sebastian Kruger, and Clete Shields. Throw in character paintings by the cast of Sin City 2 and 'From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series,' and you will never see anything like this event anywhere, in any museum. I'm very excited to be showcasing this mind-blowing art by my favorite artists and collaborators in Austin."

History Channel's Cryptid: The Swamp Beast Brings Legend to Life

    Dread Central - Fri, 03/07/2014 - 11:30

The History Channel has a new series called "Cryptid: The Swamp Beast" airing on Monday nights, and since it sounds up our alley we thought we'd bring it to your attention with more details and a teaser video.

In every region of America there are legends of strange, unidentified creatures that stretch back for centuries.

In the Northwest many credible people swear to have sighted Bigfoot. Near Lake Champlain in the Northeast, locals have sworn up and down to seeing a strange, prehistoric-like creature in the water. And down South in the swamplands, it’s no different: Some of the most deep-rooted and fearsome monster stories have endured. In the new original series "Cryptid: The Swamp Beast," one of America’s oldest mysteries and bone-chilling legends comes to life through dramatizations, eyewitness accounts, real news reports, and expert interviews.

In a remote Southern town the past few years have brought a dramatic uptick in strange occurrences, but now whatever has been lurking in the swamps is intruding into human territory. There have been a rash of cattle mutilations and pets being snatched away from backyards. With the attacks not matching up forensically with any known predators, suspicions have spread. Terrified residents claim to have seen signs of voodoo and are conjuring up old Cajun legends like the “Rougarou,” a mythical shape-shifter, as a possible culprit. Others swear they’ve seen a huge, bipedal creature locally known as a “skunk ape” lurking about at night.

The series follows a small animal-control business that responds to various calls and sightings and a deputy sheriff who believes the real culprit is some twisted individual deep in the swamp. As the weeks pass, the sightings intensify, and even the most skeptical people in town begin to wonder if its darkest legends, and their worst fears, have in fact come to life.

"Cryptid: The Swamp Beast" mixes legends with eyewitness accounts and crafts them into an entertaining and scary fictional story that speaks to America’s macabre history of folklore. It features startling real interviews with those who believe the legends and have seen strange things with their own eyes. Folklore experts, biologists, and original news clips play throughout each episode as well to add further real-world context.

New episodes air on Mondays at 10/9c. For more info visit "Cryptid: The Swamp Beast" on

Bethesda Confirms 'The Evil Within' Hardcover Art Book

    bloody disgusting - Fri, 03/07/2014 - 11:00

Hello, my name is Adam, and I have an addiction. That addiction is hardcover art books — specifically but not exclusively related to video games — which I adore. My collection is paltry, I’m sure, but I’m no less proud of it. There’s something about video game concept art that really appeals to me. Before it’s translated to a virtual world, unshackled by the limitations that technology brings, it’s raw creativity.

All that is an extremely long winded way of saying Bethesda has announced hardcover art books for three of their upcoming games, including Wolfenstein: The New Order, Dishonored, and our most anticipated horror game of 2014, Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within.

I’m still not entirely sold on Wolfenstein’s latest offering, it looks a little grey, but the other two will soon be added to my collection. If you missed it the first dozen times I’ve posted it here on Bloody Disgusting, below you’ll find the latest gameplay demo from The Evil Within.

The Evil Within arrives on August 26th for PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4. If you’re interested in its art book, you can pre-order it now on Amazon.

Feel free to send Adam an email or follow him on Twitter:

According to CraveOnline, guitarist Adam Jones of progressive rock/metal band Tool was speaking with a meet-and-greet fan before the band’s Portland, OR show and stated that the new album, the follow up to 2006′s 10,000 Days, is 100% complete and will be released this year. Aside from some talk about strange time signatures, that was the most he was willing to give.

Tool has been known to be pretty good about misdirecting people when it comes to album release dates. One member will say one thing and another will refute it only to say something completely different. So, let’s not get too excited just yet, shall we?

    All Hail The 'Blood Queen'!

    bloody disgusting - Thu, 03/06/2014 - 23:18

Dynamite just announced a new dark fantasy ongoing series, “Blood Queen”, which is slated for a June release. The series comes at you from writer Troy Brownfield and artist Fritz Casas and follows a young woman with magical powers who is hired to save a princess. It is apparently inspired by the true story of the Countess Elizabeth Bathory, and combines elements of fairytale with the Renaissance era. Although it sounds steeped in generic fantasy tropes, there are definitely intriguing aspect to “Blood Queen”. The covers are taking a page out of the “Vampirella” tradition with plenty of cleavage and a less scantily-clad red suit. Check out all the information below as well as some preview art.

    From the press release:

March 5, 2014, Mt. Laurel, NJ: Dynamite Entertainment proudly announces the upcoming June release of Blood Queen #1, the first issue of an ongoing dark fantasy comic book series by the creative team of writer Troy Brownfield and artist Fritz Casas. To commemorate the launch, Dynamite has commissioned artists Jay Anacleto, Ale Garza, and Sergio Fernandez Davila to provide the series’ captivating cover artwork.

“I’m really excited to be working on Blood Queen for Dynamite,” says Troy Brownfield, perhaps best known for his fantasy work on Grimm Fairy Tales. “I’ve always liked books that pull together different genres and manage to work on a few levels, and that’s definitely something that we’re doing here. We’ve got the horror element, the fantasy element, and we have medieval drama and all that entails. That means knights, witches, monsters, warring kingdoms, star-crossed lovers, betrayal, and loads of secrets. Or, as I like to call it: a great time.”

Set against the fairytale backdrop of knights and magic, Blood Queen begins with the heartbreaking plight of a royal child, teetering between life and death. Summoned to save the princess, a young woman of untold power begins a journey that will uncover secrets, reveal forbidden desires, and stoke the fires of war. Inspired by the notorious true story of the Countess Elizabeth Bathory, Blood Queen imagines the Renaissance era as a colorful nightmare of mayhem, lust, and sorcery.

“In terms of characters, one of the central issues is the idea, ‘How are the evil queens of fairy tales made?’” says Brownfield. “It’s less a deconstruction like Wicked and more of a look at what could make a fundamentally good person go bad. Then again, that’s not to say that it’s always going to be the person that you expect, and it’s not going to happen in the ways that you think you’ll see coming. We want to deliver twists, turns and shocks. We’ll also deal with questions of power: who has it, who earns it, who takes it, and why.”

Writer Troy Brownfield has a lengthy history as a comic book writer, journalist, and college professor. He began working in comics on the journalism side, founding and notably contributing to Newsarama, The Pulse, Newtype USA magazine, and more. He was Associate Editor for Fangoria Comics and The Scream Factory. In addition to creating the webcomics Sparkshooter (with art by Sarah Vaughn) and Solo Acoustic at, Troy has written for the likes of DC Comics, Dynamite, and Zenescope, where he was the regular writer on Grimm Fairy Tales: Myths & Legends from 2012-2013. Blood Queen is his first ongoing series for Dynamite.

Fritz Casas, the artist of Blood Queen, has contributed extensively to the Dynamite line in recent years, depicting dynamic, gorgeous female characters in such titles as Miss Fury, Red Sonja: Berserker, Kirby: Genesis – Dragonsbane, and Queen Sonja. “Fritz Casas is doing amazing work,” says Brownfield. “It looks incredible.”
“Troy’s writing is fresh and brings a great take on the character.” States Dynamite Publisher Nick Barrucci. “Troy’s first project for us was a Buck Rogers Annual he wrote years ago, which was nominated for an Eagle Award. I can’t say express how pleased I am that we are finally able to work on a new project together. Fans will be amazed by Blood Queen.”

Cover artwork for Blood Queen will be provided by Jay Anacleto (Warlord of Mars, Red Sonja) and Ale Garza (Deadpool, Teen Titans), while Sergio Fernandez Davila (Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure) has created a Retailer Exclusive Variant image that can be tailored to promote individual comic shops.

Blood Queen #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ March Previews catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in June 2014. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of Blood Queen with their local comic book retailers. Blood Queen will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.

'Vampirella' Gets Relaunched By Renowned Horror Author Nancy A. Collins

    bloody disgusting - Thu, 03/06/2014 - 23:07

Dynamite will be releasing a new “Vampirella” series in June to be penned by Nancy A. Collins, with art from Patrick Berkenkotter. Vampirella is in dire need of a modernization because, let’s face it, there’s not much going on other than blood sucking and thongs. Collins might be just what the character needs (though the covers haven’t changed) and I’m actually pumped to see where the series goes. Check out all the details below.

    From the press release:

March 5, 2014, Mt. Laurel, NJ: Dynamite is proud to announce that Nancy A. Collins, the author of Sunglasses After Dark and Vamps, will revive the iconic horror series Vampirella with a #1 issue in June. Collins will be joined by talented artist Patrick Berkenkotter (Avengers/Invaders) for the new ongoing series. Superstar illustrator Terry Dodson will provide the main cover, while a veritable who’s who of industry talent will provide variant collectible covers.

“I’m very excited about taking over the reins on Vampirella,” says Nancy Collins. “I’ve really been enjoying myself so far. In celebration of her 45th anniversary, I’m returning the book’s focus to its horror roots and giving Vampirella a slightly darker edge. Dynamite has been wonderful to work with, and have given me a great deal of support. It’s been some time since I last wrote for comics, and it feels great to be back!”

As the debut “Our Lady of Shadows” story arc begins, supernatural heroine Vampirella is sent by the Vatican to investigate the kidnapping of a little girl by the Cult of Chaos… only to become the centerpiece of a ritual invoking Lady Umbra, the sister-bride of Chaos. Of the fateful repercussions, Collins says, “Vampirella’s life is turned completely upside down, and she finds herself having to team up with the strangest bedfellow imaginable in order to battle both a demonic threat and an elite Vatican hit-squad.”

Nancy A. Collins has spent the last twenty years writing novels, short stories, and comic books for fans of the supernatural, paranormal, and fantastical. Her prose works include Sunglasses After Dark, featuring punk vampire slayer Sonja Blue, the YA series Vamps, a collection of Weird Western tales called Dead Man’s Hand, and a collection of Southern Gothic stories entitled Knuckles & Tales. Her comic book work includes Swamp Thing, Jason vs. Leatherface, Machina Jones, and Predator: Hell Come A’Walkin.

Artist Patrick Berkenkotter is a staple of Dynamite Entertainment, having contributed artwork to such titles as Red Sonja, Dark Shadows/Vampirella, Project: Superpowers, and two Dynamite/Marvel crossovers, Avengers/Invaders and The Torch. “I cannot sing Vampirella artist Patrick Berkenkotter’s praises loudly of often enough,” says Collins. “His pencils are spectacular, and he’s able to make her sexy, menacing, and bad-ass all at the same time. I think the fans are going to be pleased with his work when they pick up Vampirella #1, and I hope they take me to heart as well.”
“My first exposure to Nancy’s writing was in the pages of Swamp Thing, and I’ve always remembered her run. When Gail (Simone) suggested Nancy to write one of the anniversary stories in Legends of Red Sonja, it was a great reminder of how good of a writer Nancy is. As we were prepping for Vampirella’s relaunch, and were discussing potential writers, Joe (Rybandt, Sr. Editor) commented that since we all liked Nancy’s Red Sonja story, why not approach her. The rest, as they say, is history. Patrick illustrating Nancy’s story, and Terry Dodson coming on board as the main cover artist really compliment the series as we go in to Vampirella’s 45th Anniversary. I’m confident that fans are going to love Nancy’s take on Vampirella, and be in it for the long haul. It’s that damn good.” States Dynamite CEO/Publisher Nick Barrucci.

Dynamite will celebrate the new Vampirella series with a variety of cover options, including a Main cover by Terry Dodson (X-Men, Wonder Woman), Retailer Incentive covers by Jenny Frison, Sergio Fernandez Davila, Jack Jadson, Mimi Yoon, Ken Haeser, and a Subscription cover by Stephanie Buscema dedicated to those hardcore fans who place preorders with their local comic retailers. Sergio Fernandez Davila (Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure) has also created a Retailer Exclusive Variant image that can be tailored to promote individual comic shops.

Vampirella #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ April Previews catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in June 2014. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of Vampirella with their local comic book retailers. Vampirella will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.

    Dread Central - Thu, 03/06/2014 - 20:43

Growing up and to this very day, I would KILL to have a dinosaur for a pet. Can you imagine the possibilities? Man, would I love to sic a Raptor on the Jehovah's Witnesses who seem hellbent on waking me up at 7:00 AM on a Sunday morning.

Can you think of a quicker way for them to find God? No matter how you slice it, it's a win-win. In any event...

THR is reporting that Tom McCarthy, the filmmaker known for his indies such as The Visitor and The Station Agent, is writing, with an eye to direct, Tommysaurus Rex, and adaptation of the Doug TenNapel graphic novel. McCarthy will co-write the script with John Bland.

Mary Parent and Cale Boyter are producing via their Disruption Entertainment banner.

Taking cues from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Rex, published by Image Comics in 2004, as the following synopsis:

It tells of a boy who, after losing his pet dog, moves in with his grandfather for the summer. Bullies just compound his already miserable existence. When he discovers a T-Rex in a cave, the boy’s life changes as he must prove to the townspeople that this new pet isn’t the harmful beast they think he is.
