Confirmed: Guillermo del Toro Directing 'Beauty and the Beast'

bloody disgusting - Mon, 02/13/2012 - 19:39
Another odd project I don't know if we should be reporting on is the super vague adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, which Variety reports will now be directed by Guillermo del Toro. Del Toro has yet to venture out of the "dark side" (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, Blade 2, Mimic, The Devil's Backbone), which makes me believe this will also be a chilling take on the classic story. Warner Bros. has tapped Bridget Jones's Diary scribe Andrew Davies to write Beauty and the Beast, which also has Harry Potter star Emma Watson in final negotiations to topline the period pic. I can only assume she'll be playing the beast? It should also be noted that Del Toro is working on Pacific Rim, and attached his name to more than a handful of projects. Don't be surprised if this curse is never lifted. Del Toro will write a treatment that Davies will then work off of.

[Special Report] Take A Hit Off 'Black Forest: Hansel and Gretel & The 420 Witch'!

bloody disgusting - Mon, 02/13/2012 - 19:30
Directed by Duane Journey, Black Forest: Hansel and Gretel & The 420 Witch updates the Grimm Brothers classic fairytale to modern-day Pasadena. Except now the forest is an immense indoor hydroponic marijuana farm. So naturally some liberties have been taken with the existing text. Its being described as a bit Edgar Wright and a bit Pineapple Express but very gory. The film is "about a brother and sister who battle a witch that uses a special drug to lure teenagers into her suburban home where she devours them to maintain her youth and beauty." Written by David Tillman and produced by Dark Highway Films, Black Forest stars Molly Quinn (Castle), Michael Welch (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse), Lara Flynn Boyle (Twin Peaks, Men In Black II) and introduces Bianca Saad. Sound like your kind of thing? I was able to visit the set recently, so hit the jump for my report!

Michael Mann In Talks For Hard-Edged Thriller 'The Big Stone Grid'

bloody disgusting - Mon, 02/13/2012 - 19:09
Described as Seven meets Marathon Man, we thought it was appropriate to report on Michael Mann's potential new project. From the mind of crime dramas such as Heat and Collateral, Mann is in talks to develop to direct The Big Stone Grid, a cop thriller that Sony Pictures bought as a spec script last year by S. Craig Zahler. "The script is a hard-edged thriller about two decorated detectives who uncover a terrifying extortion ring that operates within the secret underbelly of New York City." The plan is for Mann to do a pass with the Zahler. We'll make tis the last report on the film until we know for sure just what direction it goes in.

Plot Details, New Casting For Platinum Dunes' 'Vigilandia'

bloody disgusting - Mon, 02/13/2012 - 16:56
Rhys Wakefield (pictured below; Sanctum ) will star opposite Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Max Burkholder, Adelaide Kane, Edwin Hodge and Tony Oller in sci-fi thriller Vigilandia being helmed by writer-director James DeMonaco. In addition, Bloody Disgusting exclusively scored a small taste of plot details that, until now, have been kept under wraps. The sci-fi thriller takes place in a future where a new regime, called "New Founding Fathers of America", seek to control an epidemic of violence and crime with an experiment called "The Cure". The Cure is a completely hypocritical "event" where, three times a year, for 12 hours, murder is completely legal. The film is said to play like a home invasion film with a heavy political theme. It's planned to be the first film in a post-apocalyptic franchise. Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes' (Brad Fuller and Andrew Form) - responsible for Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes - are producing with Blumhouse Productions (Paranormal Activity, Insidious). Filming is currently underway in Los Angeles.

Dan Aykroyd Shreds 'Ghostbusters 3' Rumors

bloody disgusting - Mon, 02/13/2012 - 15:16
Here we go again. Empire recently hosted a webchat with Dan Aykroyd who once again talked about Ghostbusters 3, and the rumored drama circling the long-gestured Columbia Pictures project. The site reports that Aykroyd hinted that Bill Murray may not return as Peter Venkman, and that the character could be played by a different actor, a la Jack Ryan. As for the internet rumor that Murray recently shredded a Ghostbusters 3 script and sent it back with a note that said, "No-one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts", Aykroyd denied it with vigour. "Bill Murray is not capable of such behavior. This is simply something that would not be in his nature. We have a deep, private personal relationship that transcends business. We communicate frequently and his position on the involvement in Ghostbusters 3 has been made clear and I respect that. But Bill has too much positive estimation of my writing skills to shred the work." As for the delay, he explains, "The script must be perfect. We cannot release a film that is any less than that. We have more work to do." Confirming earlier reports, Aykroyd also drops this juicy nugget about a returning character - the reclusive Rick Moranis as Louis Tully: " If we can get the script to Ghostbusters 3 right, then it would definitely have Moranis as a major component. None of us would want to do the movie without having him as a participant." If the film ever gets off the ground it will follow a ragtag group of paranormal researchers who reopen their notorious ghost removal service, and a new generation of Ghostbusters is brought on board to be green slimed and trained to contain the mischievous spirits. We previously reported that the new 'Busters will be lead by Dana and Peter's lovechild, Oscar.

'The Wicker Tree' Dated For Home Video

bloody disgusting - Mon, 02/13/2012 - 14:40
On April 24th Anchor Bay Entertainment releases the Wicker Man companion piece, The Wicker Tree, on both Blu-ray and DVD. Set in the same universe as the 1973 cult classic The Wicker Man starring Christopher Lee and Edward Woodward, the film is written and directed by the original helmer, Robin Hardy, who also reunited with the original producer Peter Snell and venerable UK production company British Lion to bring a chilling new vision of this classic story to 21st century audiences, after a theatrical run. Based on Hardys acclaimed 2006 novel Cowboys for Christ, " 'The Wicker Tree' tells the story of Texas-based singer Beth Boothby (newcomer Brittania Nicol) and her friend Steve Thomson (Henry Garrett, The Bill, Skins), two born-again Christians who come to Scotland to spread the gospel. When their initial efforts are met with disdain and disinterest, they find comfort in an invitation to sing in Tressock, the border fiefdom owned by Sir Lachlan Morrison (Graham McTavish, Rambo, the upcoming The Hobbit films). However, Beths and Steves message of personal chastity quickly comes into direct conflict with Tressocks sexual and religious practices, drawing upon ancient Celtic beliefs and rituals. Temptations begin to challenge Beth and Steve with the stakes no less than their very lives and souls..." Bonus features on The Wicker Tree Blu-ray and DVD include a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes and the theatrical trailer. Lee, who played the mysterious Lord Summerisle in the original, returns again in a dramatic cameo. Rounding out the cast are Jacqueline Leonard as Lady Delia Morrison, Clive Russell as Beame, James Mapes as Reverend Moriarty and Honeysuckle Weeks as Lolly.

[Sundance '12] Interview: 'Grabbers' Filmmakers Jon Wright and Kevin Lehane

bloody disgusting - Mon, 02/13/2012 - 14:21
The Sundance Film Festival midnight movie Grabbers can claim at least one thing we've never seen before. There has never before been a movie where the secret to beating the monsters was to get totally drunk. Sure, Shaun of the Dead had heroes defeat zombies despite being drunk, but this is the first time it's actually a strategy. Irish writer Kevin Lehane and director Jon Wright made a film about bloodsucking aliens invading Ireland, and the local cops figure out if they're drunk, the monsters won't touch their blood. Partied out by the end of the week, Lehane and Wright chatted with me Wednesday afternoon over waters and Diet Cokes, but still a lively discussion about drinking, movie monsters and good CG.
