Sin City: A Dame to Kill For - The Cast and Crew Speak!

You know you’ve arrived – not just as a filmmaker but as a human being – when President Barack Obama comes over to your pad to hang out poolside and have some lunch. Though Robert Rodriguez was coy about that bit of info slipping out at the Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For press conference in Beverly Hills last week.

He did admit he made pizza pies for the prez. “Yes, we had POTUS pizza,” he quipped.

Also on hand for the Dimension Films event were Rodriguez’s co-director, Frank Miller, and stars Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Eva Green and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Based on Miller's Dark Horse Comics series, the sequel includes two segments derived from existing storylines A Dame to Kill For and Just Another Saturday Night plus brand-new original stories The Big Fat Kill and The Long, Bad Night. Favorite characters seen in the first film are back (with a vengeance, of course!): Alba as exotic dancer Nancy, Bruce Willis as Hartigan, Mickey Rourke as muscle Marv, and there are some new faces as well -- Green as femme fatale Ava, Gordon-Levitt as lucky Johnny, and Brolin slips in seamlessly as Dwight (who was played by Clive Owen in the first film).

The sequel has Rodriguez and Miller recreating the stark, dark and contrasty look of the first flick, shooting entirely against a green screen and in 3D. The scenery was added later, and they took great care in digitally manipulating the lighting and design in post-production. “It’s like being an artist,” said Rodriguez. “You pencil out your sketch first, then you fill it in.

For Miller’s part, he thinks the whole process is rather like reverse-engineering. “We take a movie and make it into a book.

Q: What was it like shooting with so much green screen?

Josh Brolin: You have to find the cadence. The cadence doesn't come to you. It's the kind of movie you really have to dive into. You can't manipulate the movie. And you can't manipulate Frank Miller's mind.

Frank Miller: Many have tried.

Miller said that although some things are ingrained – “I draw the way I draw,” regardless of whether or not he knows who might be playing certain individuals in a film – in some ways he’s evolved as a storyteller. “I am far more aware of character than I used to be,” he said.

Q: How did you newbies feel, stepping into the legendary Sin City?

Josh Brolin: I was a big fan of the first movie, but this one is different. The opportunity to be able to do it was really unnerving, but when I watched it afterwards, it was one of the few movies that I've done where I thought, 'Thank God I'm in this movie. I'm really proud to be in this movie.' I would go see a few times if weren't in it, but because I'm in it, it would seem pretentious.

Q: What did you like best about it, Joe?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: I liked the cover page of the script, where it said, “Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller.” [What I really liked about it was] you get to become a cartoon in a way. We're not in the real world, in Sin City.

In fact, Levitt revealed that it was totally unreal from Day One. On his very first day or work, he shot two surreal scenes, back-to-back: one with Christopher Lloyd and one with Lady Gaga!

Eva Green: Playing Ava, it was a challenge to still be believable and lie all the time... she's so bad, so that was very fun. No conscience. No sense of right or wrong. She's pretty evil. But it was interesting to play all these different women in one.

Though the actors had some challenges, the co-directors’ mettle was also tested. It’s not easy to top an unforgettable first film, or at least try to compare. Dashing the hopes of Starbucks scribes everywhere, Rodriguez said the secret to great writing is a great environment. “Everything around you needs to be inspiring,” he said.

Q: How has Nancy evolved since the original film?

Jessica Alba: Nancy is devastated. She's an alcoholic, she's still dancing, and she's not happy about it. That wasn’t easy, all those skimpy costumes, because I'm a mom. I have two kids. I run a company. I'm not this drunk stripper, so I really had to get into that headspace of the character. But I liked playing a character who goes from being a sweet, innocent, naive victim to this very powerful warrior who takes her life into her own hands and gets revenge.

Revenge is indeed the name of the gory game in Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For. Although it’s not a horror film, the body count is just as high as any – not to mention eye-gouges, eviscerations, bludgeoning and blood (mostly white… but just as flowing as the red stuff). Take a Wild Ride with this Pair of Promos for Sleepy Hollow Season 2

We're closing in on the September 22nd premiere date for "Sleepy Hollow" Season 2, and Fox is pulling out all the stops to make sure you remember that it's on its way. Here's a pair of new promos that promise a wild ride awaits!

"Sleepy Hollow" focuses on a resurrected Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison), who’s pulled two and a half centuries through time to unravel a mystery that dates all the way back to America’s founding fathers. Along for the wild ride is a modern-day cop, Lt. Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie).

Orlando Jones, Katia Winter, and John Noble return, and joining the show this coming season are Timothy Busfield as Benjamin Franklin; Sakina Jaffrey as Sheriff Reyes, filling in for the incarcerated Frank Irving (Jones); and Matt Barr as Nick Hawley, an arms dealer who gets drawn into Ichabod and Abbie's work.

Season 2 of "Sleepy Hollow" will be an expanded 18 episodes, and we should have a synopsis for Episode 2.01 shortly - stay tuned! If you're still not quite caught up on Season 1, the Blu-ray and DVD arrive on September 16th.

[Preview] Marvel’s “Original Sin” #8

JUDGEMENT! That’s what’s coming, in the conclusion to Jason Aaron’s epic Marvel crossover event storyline. Honestly I’m not one for event comics, but “Original Sin” has embraced this wacky b-movie camp that has made it an incredibly thrilling ride thus far. Review: “Odyssey” Volume 1

“Odyssey” follows one soldier’s grand disillusionment with the American war machine.  It’s a story we’ve seen countless times before, a regular man turned super solider against his will, but small sadistic twists stand out amongst the heavy handed political message to create something more, albeit a little undercooked.

There is something about this book that I find oddly alluring. It has a similar framework to Captain America but distinctly pursues an alternative route by channeling something more horrific for the origin of the super solider.

And sure – you’ve got a sequence where Blazing Glory rips out Hiter’s heart and makes a mural of his blood, but it’s too much. Don’t get me wrong, typically I’d be all for something like that, but in this story it feels incredibly tonally jarring.

See, “Odyessey” can’t make up it’s mind. It’s unsure of itself and finds a wavering protagonist in Blazing Glory. It’s a story we’ve seen a thousand times before, a super solider turned government tool. It’s got fantastic set pieces including a fantastic reveal that a mission to post 9-11 Iraq was actually to retrieve Dracula, but still it feels incredibly tonally jarring.

Even more still is the stellar work of artists Garrie Gastonny and Toby Cypress. I’m a huge fan of Cypress after his work on “The White Suits” but man oh man are his talents underused in his particular section of the book. He’s got a more surreal and animalistic style that was screaming for a showdown with Dracula. Instead he’s saddled with the most dialogue heavy part of the script, leaving his wild style at the most reserved I’ve ever seen it.

Garrie Gastonny has a beautifully detailed and clean approach that causes the rest of the book to shine. The panels are easily digestible and the character work is vivid and detailed. The above-mentioned scene with Hitler will haunt my mind for some time to come.

The final pages of this first volume come to define Blazing Glory in a brand new way that I found completely captivating but couldn’t help but feel a little shortchanged when it came right down to it, only because I wanted to know more about this huge change of status quo. I craved to know more about it, and just when everything was coming together the book ends.

It’s the tonal shifts that cause this book to falter. Dave Elliot can’t seem to make up his mind between the world of the supernatural and the political, and because of this the book feels lost somewhere in the middle. The supernatural elements complete shine and come to define the book against the whole cavalcade of stories like it, where the political elements feel far too undercooked and under researched to really make an impact.

So the whole experience is rather polarizing. If you’re a fan of either type of story you’ll probably leave a little disappointed, but if you’re looking for something truly unique that swings for the fences with ambition then this is the book for you. Yet, I caution that ultimately both stories fail to deliver on their premise. Proceed with caution.

‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Wraps Production

Director Joss Whedon surprised fans today by tweeting out that production is officially wrapped on Avengers: Age of Ultron, the sequel to Marvel’s smash hit that’s set for release on May 1, 2015.

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” will bring the Marvel Universe’s biggest heroes together again to face one of their biggest villains…

Word has it that the film adaptation differentiates (thankfully) from the comic, in which Ultron becomes self-aware and destroys the planet (sort of like The Terminator). I don’t like the post-apocalyptic scenario in the comics, and really hope the movie focuses more on Ultron’s rise in power. Post-apocalytic visuals in films don’t work for me – they were horrendous in the otherwise epic X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Ben Meares, Mark Alan Miller, & Victor LaValle Open Up Lemarchand’s Box in “Hellraiser: Bestiary”

Symphony in Red

Bloody-Disgusting: We don’t often see the cenobites in a moment of vulnerability, what made you want to tell this story?

Ben Meares: For exactly that reason. We rarely see Cenobites acting as anything except tools of torture. But it has been established, both in the films and the comics, that Cenobites are three-dimensional characters; flawed in the same ways as we all are. Exploring that was far too exciting a prospect to ignore.

Mark Miller: And also the fact that we’d just come off of some very intense and often complex narratives. Elliott Spencer/Pinhead had been through the shit. It made sense that he’d have some issues he’d need to work out once he got back into office.

BD: The cenobites don’t seek pleasure in the same way that we do. Symphony in Red is perhaps Pinhead’s greatest creation—what sort of mindset do you have to get in when thinking of new ways to enjoy pain?

BM: I really don’t consider Symphony in Red to be about pain, per se. There’s a lot of torture and blood in it, sure, but it’s about obsession and the potentially devastating effects that can come from pursuing one’s obsessions without regard for responsibilities or duties. As obsessives ourselves, Mark and I both thought it would be an interesting subject to explore. But, to answer the question about a ‘mindset’: I’m a lifelong horror fan. I’ve always got this stuff in my head. I don’t need to be in a certain mindset to come up with gross or scary scenarios. Mark?

MM: Yeah. I’m already there most of the time anyway. It doesn’t take much channeling for me to get to the bloody stuff.

BD: The pages have a whole collection of cenobites we’ve never seen before, laying worship to Pinhead. Why do they follow him, what makes him so special, and why was it so worrisome he’s consumed by his work?

MM: Easy. He’s Pinhead.

BM: Exactly. Pinhead is the Pope of Hell. After the events of The Dark Watch, where Leviathan’s realm was nearly torn asunder, Pinhead’s return to his throne is celebrated… Except he never addresses his own return. Think of it this way: What if the Pope returned to the Vatican after a year-long sabbatical only to avoid addressing his congregants? It would be no small thing.

MM: You better believe there’d be a mass of people, waiting in their own waste until he showed his face. They’d all assume he had something revelatory to say. Pinhead is having a revelations…but it’s a very personal affair.

BD: What goes into exploring small stories within the world of Hellraiser? Is there a constant theme? Or does anything go?

MM: Surprise us. Make us cringe in a good way. Hellraiser is a transgressive playground. We’re up for anything as long as it’s working out some demons, so to speak.

BM: The constant theme is the same theme as the films: lust, obsession and pain (or the obsession of lusting after pain, or the pain of obsessing over lust, etc). Other than that, the Hellraiser world is fit for nearly any genre of story. It’s one of the best aspects of Bestiary: almost any kind of story can work within the Hellraiser mythos.

BD: What’s the most challenging part in trying to create painful spectacles of torture?

BM: Figuring out a fear that is universal in most people, to me, is the most challenging thing. There are plenty of things that scare me that don’t scare other people. These are horror stories, after all, so the intent is always to incite a fearful reaction. The bottom line, though, is that it’s not particularly challenging for me to come up with a torture scene. It’s all fiction, after all, and it’s fun to make things up. Especially things that will make people cringe.

MM: I’m mostly concerned with how to top myself. But when I write myself into a corner, I usually find there’s something terrible waiting for me there. All I have to do is let it in.

Desert Fathers

BD: Where did the inspiration for the story come from?

Victor LaValle: I’ve always loved the Hellraiser universe, but had a particular curiosity about that special class of demon, the Eremite. While there’s obviously and rich and varied history of stories about the Cenobites there wasn’t too much about the Eremites so I thought it would be fun to tell a story about one of them. Since I’m originally from the part of Queens, New York that’s depicted in the story it was an easy choice to set it there. My little shot at immortalizing my neighborhood in the Hellraiser universe!

BD: How does it feel to have your first published comics story be one in the “Hellraiser” universe?

VLV: I read The Hellbound Heart at some point in high school. I’d already been a fan of Barker’s Books of Blood and The Damnation Game. He’s one of the writers who most made me want to start telling stories. The idea that you could flash ahead a couple decades and I’d be pitching a story to him, and getting his go ahead, well it’s one of the true honors of my writing life so far.

BD: How did you craft the look of the gigantic beast in the climax with Colin Lorimer?

VLV: I think all I wrote was something like “the Eremite appears in beast mode” and Colin turned it into the absolutely stunning creature that’s on the page. I’m proud as hell of my writing but I can’t take any credit for the beauty of the art. That belongs to him. I’m just happy I got him to illustrate my first comic story.

The Hunted

BD: What made you want to turn the tables against the cenobites?

BM: That was all Clive. He wanted to see the hunter become the hunted, and we were more than happy to oblige. A good role-reversal story is always so much fun. How could we resist?

MM: This is the question that comes up the most about Bestiary. And it’s a good one. We’ve never really seen Pinhead this vulnerable. It always seems like he’s one step ahead of the game. Clive thought (and we agreed) that it’d be kind of cool to see what happened if Pinhead found himself in a totally helpless situation. He’s a creation of pure will. What would that kind of entity do in such a situation. Fight tooth and nail, if you’ll pardon the pun, to get back what belongs to him.

BD: What was it like working with Carlos Magno?

MM: He just gets it. When we send the script over, we know we’re in good hands and it’s just a matter of having the patience to wait and see what he sends us. That’s the hard part!

BM: Carlos is a genius. He’s a visualist to the umpteenth degree, with a skill for visual storytelling that is, quite frankly, unmatched in the majority of the comics world. He’s remained faithful to our scripts throughout, while always going the extra mile to make sure that the visuals are far deeper and richer than we could ever describe in our scripts.

BD: Did Pinhead enjoy the pain they inflicted upon him?

BM: This is one of those ambiguous moments in the story that I personally would much rather remain ambiguous. I like the idea of leaving some of the conclusions to the reader.

MM: I will go one step further and add that Pinhead definitely finds something to enjoy here.

BD: How will Pinhead exact his glorious revenge?

BM: He defeats his enemies with the help of his lovable robot octopus pal named Slickity Splitz. Slickity, you see, had one of his mechanical tentacles stolen by the same poachers… I’m lying. That doesn’t happen. You’re just going to have to wait and see. Besides, who’s to say if Pinhead gets revenge at all? Who’s to say this isn’t the end of Pinhead as we know it?

MM: I reckon you’ll have to read it to find out.

‘The Devil Carnival 2′ Is Filming With David Hasselhoff and More

If you follow the socials for director Darren Lynn Bousman and The Devil’s Carnival, it;s no secret that production is underway on the sequel, which will bring us performances by Emilie Autumn, Briana Evigan, Jessica Lowndes, Marc Senter, Terrance Zdunich, Paul Sorvino, Shawn “Clown” Crahan, Bill Moseley, Ogre, Captain Maggot and J. Larose.

They’ve posted a ton of behind-the-scenes shots, one of which reveals that David Hasselhoff has a role. There’s ton of names yet to be announced, so watch this spot for the big reveals in the coming weeks.

“Dracula Untold: Reign of Blood” will introduce guests to the sadistic Transylvanian ruler Vlad Tepes, known as “Vlad the Impaler,” who infamously tortured his enemies by impaling them alive with a wooden stake and suspending their bodies. The foreboding maze will also shed an ominous light on the one-time hero, turned blood-thirsty-tyrant, who chose to embrace unholy powers in order to defeat his enemies. “Dracula Untold: Reign of Blood” will spiral guests through Dracula’s eternal damnation, where the thirst for blood is never-ending.

Universal Studios’ “Halloween Horror Nights” events have a more than 20-year history of creating incredibly entertaining, horrifying Halloween experiences that are consistently rated the nation’s best. The events on each coast feature highly-themed, disturbingly real, haunted mazes based on everything from films to nightmares – and streets filled with hundreds of specially trained “scareactors.” Other announced “Halloween Horror Nights” experiences include, “The Walking Dead: The End of the Line,” “From Dusk Till Dawn,” “Face Off: In the Flesh,” “The Purge: Anarchy” and “AVP: Alien vs. Predator.”

In addition to “Dracula Untold: Reign of Blood,” other “Halloween Horror Night” attractions will include “The Walking Dead: The End of the Line,” based on AMC’s hit TV series, “From Dusk Till Dawn,” inspired by inspired by Robert Rodriguez’s cult film and El Rey network’s TV Series, “AVP: Alien vs. Predator,” based on the Twentieth Century Fox film franchise, “Face Off: In the Flesh,” based on Syfy’s TV series, and “Purge: Anarchy,” a new scare zone inspired by Universal Pictures’ blockbuster thriller.

Warner Bros. Building ‘LEGO’ Franchise

When The Lego Movie hit theaters earlier this year, I was skeptical as all hell – until I saw it. Easily one of the best children films ever made, it also connected with adults, and planted plenty of pop culture references that will still be relevant years down the line. It was so good, in fact, that I welcome sequels. And sequels we shall get.

Warner Bros. is already planning Lego 2 for May 26, 2017, but is looking to add two more in the years following.

According to THR, they could be planning for a threequel for 2019, while a sequel to the Lego Ninjago spinoff could claim the 2018 date. (A first Ninjago film is already set for September 23, 2016.)

Dates to Pencil in: May 25, 2018, and May 24, 2019.

The Lego Movie grossed $468 million worldwide earlier this year. The film, which cost $60 million to produce, featured the voices of Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman.

TWC-Dimension shared nearly 10 minutes worth of behind-the-scenes footage from Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.

In theaters August 22, the film is about Dwight McCarthy planing to have his vengeance against the woman who betrayed him, Ava Lord, while Nancy is trying to cope with Hartigan’s death.

[TV] Six Travel to HBO’s “Westworld”

“Boardwalk Empire‘s” Jeffrey Wright, pictured, “Lost‘s” Rodrigo Santoro and “Raising Hope‘s” Shannon Woodward have joined “Westworld,” HBO’s sci-fi drama pilot from exec producers J.J. Abrams, Jerry Weintraub and Bryan Burk and writers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, reports TVLine.

Ingrid Bolso Berdal (Hercules), Angela Sarafyan (The Good Guys) and Simon Quarterman (The Devil Inside) have also been added to the ensemble.

Inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1973 movie of the same name, “ ‘Westworld revolves around a futuristic theme park where robots go berserk and attack the guests.

As previously reported, Anthony Hopkins stars as Dr. Robert Ford, the park’s head honcho who has “unorthodox methods” of bringing his visions to life. Evan Rachel Wood co-stars as Dolores Abernathy, a sweet, Midwestern farm girl who is in for a very rude awakening.

Here’s a rundown of who the six new hires will play:

Wright | Bernard Lowe: The brilliant and quixotic head of the park’s Programming Division, Bernard’s keen observation of human nature provides him with boundless inspiration for his life’s work: creating artificial people.

Santoro | Harlan Bell: Terrifying and brutal, with a dark sense of humor, Harlan is Westworld’s perennial “Most Wanted” bandit. He subscribes to the theory that the West is a wild place, and the only way to survive is to embrace the role of predator.

Woodward | Elsie King: A sardonic rising star in the Programming division, Elsie is charged with diagnosing the odd quirks of behaviors in the park’s hosts.

Berdal | Armistice: A savage fighter and brutal bandit, her ruthlessness with her victims is surpassed only by her abiding loyalty to her fellow outlaws.

Sarafyan | Clementine Pennyfeather: One of Westworld’s most popular attractions, every aspect of Clementine is perfectly beguiling, by design.

Quarterman | Lee Sizemore: The narrative director of Westworld, his inspired storylines consistently delight or terrify the guests — and his artistic temperament consistently grates on his colleagues.

Lionsgate released several character posters for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, as shown below.

In theaters November 21, 2014, the worldwide phenomenon of The Hunger Games continues to set the world on fire with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, which finds Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in District 13 after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin (Julianne Moore) and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and a nation moved by her courage.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 is directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Danny Strong and Peter Craig.

Scientists Can Now Recover Audio From Silent Videos

Mind freakin’ blown.

Scientists at MIT have found a way to extract audio from silent videos, where the only information presented is the visual component.

Graduate student Abe Davis explains:

“When sound hits an object, it causes the object to vibrate. The motion of this vibration creates a very subtle visual signal that’s usually invisible to the naked eye. People didn’t realize that this information was there.

We’re recovering sounds from objects. That gives us a lot of information about the sound that’s going on around the object, but it also gives us a lot of information about the object itself, because different objects are going to respond to sound in different ways.

Sound moves at a wide range of frequencies, so the better the camera (meaning the higher speeds it can capture), the better the sound one can achieve from the vibrations. The scientists used cameras that can record up to 6,000 frames per second, which is about 100x more powerful than smartphone cameras but well below the commercial high speed cameras that are able to achieve 100,000 fps.

It’d be pretty amazing to see if they could take older silent films, such as Nosferatu and The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari, and recover the audio from those.

‘The Babadook’ Haunting Kids This November

IFC Midnight will releasee the acclaimed hit horror, The Babadook, here in the States on November 28.

Written and directed by Jennifer Kent, The Babadook has terrified audiences since it premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival (read our review) and will have its UK premiere at Film4 FrightFest on August 23 at Vue West End in London’s Leicester Square.

The French release is closer that anywhere else in the world, which is how we just now landed a new trailer, clip, interviews and featurette that takes you behind-the-scenes of this boogeyman tale.

Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6-year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a sinister monster he believes is coming to kill them both.

When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that ‘The Babadook’ is the creature he’s been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control and as he becomes more unpredictable and violent, Amelia is genuinely frightened by her son’s behaviour.

But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.

[Fantastia '14 Review] ‘Preservation’ Is a Primal, Satisfying Thriller

Christopher Denham won acclaim on the festival circuit back in 2008 with his found footage thriller Home Movie. For his sophomore effort, Denham takes on survival horror with Preservation, which feels a bit like You’re Next by way of The Strangers. But while You’re Next was overtly comic, Preservation‘s humor is much more uncomfortable and actually serves to raise tension, rather than release it. It’s final girl also lacks the survival skills of Sharni Vinson’s character and must fight tooth and claw, relying on primal instincts to get by as masked assailants play out their murderous blood sport.

For a horror film, Preservation also takes a unique approach to cellphones. Meaning, they work. Four bars and everything. Technology and its absence is a theme presented early on in the film, as recently returned veteran Sean Neary is repulsed by his brother Mike’s dependence on his cellphone. Mike’s wife Wit is also annoyed by her husband’s phone being attached to his face all to the time, to the point where it’s affecting their relationship.

Denham gives his character’s a lot of room in the beginning of the film to establish themselves and their relationships, which pays off nicely later on. They travel into the forest for a hunting/camping trip, though the thought of killing an animal turns vegan Wit’s stomach. Sean (The Wire‘s Pable Schreiber) is the consummate huntsman, whose PTSD is just beginning to show. Mike (Aaron Staton) has been neglecting his wife, allowing his business to consume his life. Wit (Wrenn Schmidt) is hoping the trip will rekindle their romance as she prepares to make a big announcement to Mike.

As if tension between them wasn’t already thick enough, they awake the following morning to find all of their belongings gone and Xs drawn on their foreheads. The Xs are such a creepy touch. What follows could easily be a run-of-the-mill stalk and slash thriller set in the woods. How many times have we seen that? Thankfully, Denham knows his horror films and defies the traditional beats of the genre that would typically follow such an introduction.

Besides its refreshing path of direction, Preservation also sports one of the most impressive and sympathetic final girls in a while. Wrenn Schmidt, probably best known as Julia Sagorsky on Boardwalk Empire, morphs her character from a big softie who can’t shoot a deer to a primal killer, drenched in dirt and blood but with wide eyes, like the remaining humanity inside her can’t believe the savagery she’s committing. Early on in the film she admits, “I’m not really the hunting type.” By the time the final shot rolls over our eyeballs, she’s a force of nature. And believe me, the final shot is amazing and grotesque  – it manages to create nervous laughs while making you do a small fist pump at its implications (think the iconic final shot of Death Wish).

The film isn’t without its faults. Early on there are some heavy-handed allusions to the myth of Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, which foreshadows Wit’s baptism in blood. It’s appropriate in the hunting context that kicks off the film, but feels ham-fisted presented the way it is. More so because Denham is great at writing dialogue, so the piece about Artemis comes off as a shoddily inserted bit aimed at giving the story mythological implications. It’s unnecessary and doesn’t advance the film in any meaningful way. (Without spoiling anything) there’s a set piece during the final act that threatens to shatter the consistently dreadful tone of the film as well, but Denham quickly recovers for the climax.

Preservation is one of those films you go into expecting the expected. A stalk and slash film in the woods in which an innocent girls faces off against masked assailants – seen it before. But with Denham’s new film, he manages to appropriate tropes from the survival genre and deliver his own bloody beast. It’s a wholly satisfying  and chilling thriller that says something about society without shoving its message in our face. A violent and beautiful film, Preservation proves Denham is one to watch. Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait another seven years for his next effort.

‘Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’, ‘Game Of Thrones: Season 4′ OSTs Coming To Limited Vinyl

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes has been receiving rave reviews since its release, with people stating that it’s not just a summer blockbuster but that it also contains an amazing story, a lot of emotion, and some great characters. Plus, it’s got a score from composer Michael Giacchino (Lost, Cloverfield), which never hurts!

Well, now that score is coming to 2xLP vinyl on September 1st, with 2,000 copies receiving a limited “silverback” variant.

Also coming to vinyl is the season 4 soundtrack to the hit HBO show Game Of Thrones, which is composed by Ramin Djawadi. That 2xLP vinyl will also have a limited variant in the form of “iron throne” silver/gray.

Entombed A.D.’s “Pandemic Rage” Video Is Basically A Short Horror Film

Metal band Entombed A.D. have released an official music video for their track “Pandemic Rage” and it plays out like a scene from Wrong Turn or a far more violent Deliverance. The shoot follows a woman who is fleeing from a murderous redneck that loves wearing a burlap sack, a lá Jason Voorhees pre-Friday The 13th Part III. Check it out down yonder!
