‘Driver’s’ Refn Hosts Restored ‘Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ Screening (Video)

bloody disgusting - Wed, 06/04/2014 - 09:16

About a month ago it was revealed that Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn is a huge horror fan.

While at one point he was helping out on the Maniac Cop remake, he’s currently developing The Bringing, inspired by the widely circulated video of a young woman who displayed erratic behavior in an elevator at the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles.

Colin Geddes, the man behind the Midnight Madness program at TIFF, was on hand for a screening of the newly restored 4K digital restoration of Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in The Directors’ Fortnight (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs), a showcase of new directors, independent and avant-guard films presented outside competition and parallel to the main festival.

Showing his true love for the genre, Refn hosted said event, and Mr. Geddes was awesome enough to record it all! Watch as one of Hollywood’s biggest up-and-comers talks about the 1974 masterpiece that changes horror cinema forever.

Linkin Park Releases New Track With System Of A Down’s Daron Malakian

bloody disgusting - Wed, 06/04/2014 - 08:10

Alt-rock band Linkin Park has released a stream of a new track entitled “Rebellion”, which features System Of A Down‘s Daron Malakian. The track comes from the band’s upcoming album The Hunting Party, which comes out June 17th. You can hear the track below.

What I’ve noticed about each of the tracks that the band has released so far is that they all sound super compressed. The cymbals don’t sound like their being hit, they sound like their distorting. It’s upsetting because even though I’m not the biggest Linkin Park fan I still recognize that they have a lot of dynamics going on in their songs. However, instead of highlighting those, they opted to even everything out and it all sounds like one mess. What a shame.

Marvel Has Their ‘Dr. Strange’ Director!!

bloody disgusting - Tue, 06/03/2014 - 19:20

Regular readers know I’m a huge fan of Scott Derrickson, pictured below, even if Sinister wasn’t my favorite of his works. I quite enjoyed his modern day take on The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Exorcism of Emily Rose had its moments. While we have yet to see his latest genre offering, Deliver Us From Evil, he’s already being propelled into Marvel stardom by becoming the new director on Dr. Strange!

Variety explains that talks are still early, but sources say Derrickson is Marvel’s choice and a deal should be struck shortly.

The comicbook revolved around a former neurosurgeon who serves as the “Sorcerer Supreme” — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Strange made his first appearance in the 1963 comicbook series “Strange Tales” and would go on to have his own comicbook series and would appear in several other comicbooks that included “The Fantastic Four,” “Spider-Man” and “Nick Fury.”

The pic will be produced by Kevin Feige. Executive producers on the project are Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Stan Lee and Stephen Broussard.

THR gets all wet with the first trailer for director Steven C. Miller’s (Under The Bed, Aggression Scale) Submerged, which features Tim Daley, Mario Van Peebles, Jonathan Bennett and Rosa Salazar in a heap of trouble.

Penned by Mother’s Day‘s Scott Milam, “the film sees a limo ride home from a party turning into a terrifying ordeal for a group of college kids. A young woman and her friends have been targeted by a ring of vengeful kidnappers and must do everything they can to survive after their limo is forced off the road and plunged into a canal.

McDonald’s New “Happy” Logo Injected Into Horror Films

bloody disgusting - Tue, 06/03/2014 - 19:12

Earlier this month McDonald’s unveiled “Happy”, their new mascot that looks like an psychotic Happy Meal box overeager (much like a car salesman) to sell you some food.

Critics everywhere have been slamming the new centerpiece for being too frightening for kids. Frankly, I think McDonald’s just got a bit cooler.

Whatever the case may be, there’s outrage, so Foodiggity took it upon themselves to insert “Happy” into various horror films where, well, he belongs.

Michael Moreci Takes You To The “Roche Limit”

bloody disgusting - Tue, 06/03/2014 - 17:18

We’ve been teasing this one over the past week, and we are stoked to finally reveal Michael Moreci’s new series from Image Comics, “Roche Limit”. Joining Moreci will be Vic Malhotra on art. Look for issue #1 in shops this September.

Nerdist reports, “A hardboiled sci-fi noir story, Roche Limit takes us to the edges of the cosmos to the eponymous colony of Roche Limit, a grueling, dangerous place that sits on the precipice of a mysterious energy source and teems with criminal activity. When a girl, Bekkah Hudson, goes missing though, it prompts a search that reveals some terrible truths about mankind and even more terrible dangers facing them.”

I’ve been a fan of Moreci since the first issue of “Hoax Hunters”, but he has since outdone himself time and time again. His last book, “Curse”, from BOOM! Studios is a werewolf masterpiece, that nobody should miss. Given his track record thus far, “Roche Limit” should already be on your pull list.

Short Indie Doc Celebrates the Horror Anthology!

bloody disgusting - Tue, 06/03/2014 - 17:05

Talented up and coming filmmaker Ryan Spindell is working hard to get his indie anthology project off the ground, and has resorted to assembling a really awesome short documentary detailing years of horror anthologies.

“We Come In Pieces: The Rebirth of the Horror Anthology Film” is a documentary short that chronicles and celebrates the past, present, and future of horror anthology films.

According to the press release:

When filmmaker Ryan Spindell (“Kirksdale,” “The Root Of The Problem”) set out to make his horror anthology film The Mortuary Collection (Kickstarter here), producers rejected it outright. Time and time again, he was told that horror anthologies are dead at the studio level, but the question no one seemed to be able to answer was, why?

To find out Spindell teamed up with documentary filmmaker Ben Hethcoat (Dead Dad, D.I.Y) and together they sat down with legendary moviemakers Joe Dante (Gremlins, Twilight Zone: The Movie), Michael Dougherty (Trick R Treat), Darin Scott (Tales From The Hood), Larry Fessenden (We Sell The Dead) and a handful of genre experts to discuss the horror anthologies they love, the current state of the format, and the future of the horror anthology film. In the course of making the documentary, Spindell and Hethcoat discovered that despite the studios reluctance to get behind the horror anthology format, the fans of the long-dormant subgenre are as fervent as ever. With renewed enthusiasm the filmmakers have set out to connect directly with those fans by launching a Kickstarter Campaign to finance The Mortuary Collection independently.

Being that I produced the three V/H/S films, I think I have a pretty good answer to his question, but it’s not something I can just spew out in one sitting. There are so many factors that get in the way of a studio getting behind a horror anthology – the main one being fear.

Whatever the case may be, this is a fun, well put together indie doc that any horror fan would enjoy. And frankly, Spindell is a good filmmaker who I’d like to see behind the camera some more. Go support his campaign and keep the horror anthology alive.

THE CHILDREN'S FILM FOUNDATION COLLECTION: Runaways (1953/1972/1985)

nothingbutthenight - Sat, 05/03/2014 - 09:05
For over thirty years the Children’s Film Foundation sought to entertain successive generations of young viewers, originally with the intent of providing a healthy antidote to the unregulated fare often found spilling out of the numerous children’s Saturday morning film clubs run unofficially at the weekend, during the immediate postwar period, by local cinema managers.
