Official Hannibal Season 2 Specs Takes a Bite Out of Home Video

Thu, 08/14/2014 - 13:00

Here at Dread Central we love "Hannibal." Honestly, I still think we don't deserve a show as good as it is! If you haven't watched it, please rectify that situation IMMEDIATELY, if not sooner. With Season 2 about to come home, you have no excuse. Speaking of which...

From the Press Release
Hannibal: Season Two, the next chapter of the smash hit series, will keep viewers on the edge of their seats when it arrives on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD), DVD (plus Digital), and Digital HD September 16th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

From Bryan Fuller, the executive producer of TV’s “Heroes” and “Pushing Daisies,” comes the complete second season of the deliciously dark and twisted show.

Based on the characters and elements appearing in the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris, Hannibal, from Gaumont International Television in association with Sony Pictures Television Networks, stars Mads Mikkelsen (The Hunt) as the iconic Hannibal Lecter, Emmy Award® nominee Hugh Dancy (Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie, Elizabeth I, 2005), and Academy Award® nominee Laurence Fishburne (Best Actor in a Leading Role, What's Love Got to Do with It, 1993). The show co-stars Caroline Dhavernas (TV’s “Off the Map”) and guest stars Hettienne Park (Young Adult), Scott Thompson (TV’s “The Colbert Report”), Aaron Abrams (TV’s “The LA Complex”), Gillian Anderson (TV’s “X-Files”), Raul Esparza (TV’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Eddie Izzard (Valkyrie), Cynthia Nixon (HBO’s “Sex in the City”), Michael Pitt (HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire”), and Katharine Isabelle (Syfy’s “Being Human”).

Premiering to over 4.8 million viewers, Hannibal continues its second season with Will Graham (Dancy) locked in a mental asylum, accused of Hannibal Lecter’s (Mikkelsen) crimes. Jack Crawford (Fishburne) is dealing with his own feelings about Will, and whether his protégé is in fact a cold-blooded killer. With Will locked up, Hannibal becomes Jack’s new consultant on cases. The deadly dance between these characters continues to turn in startling and unexpected ways, in a season that will show nothing can ever be the same again.

Before Hannibal Season 3 airs on NBC, catch up with Hannibal: Season Two, which contains all 13 episodes on three discs loaded with special features that include select episode audio commentaries with the cast and crew, a feature-length documentary on the making of Episode 2.05, featurettes on the style of Hannibal Lector and the prosthetics and effects in the show, cast and crew reflections on Season 2, webisodes, deleted scenes, and a gag reel. Sleepy Hollow Adds Aunjanue Ellis as Abbie and Jenny's Mom

    Thu, 08/14/2014 - 12:55

Sure, the character may be assumed to be dead, but in the world of "Sleepy Hollow" there are no sure things, as evidenced by this recent casting news for the character of Abbie and Jenny's mother, Lori Mills.

Per Entertainment Weekly, Aunjanue Ellis ("The Mentalist") will portray Mrs. Mills. As we'll learn, due to Lori’s mental condition, both Abbie and Jenny were taken from their mother as children and made wards of the state, eventually ending up in foster care.

The girls believe their mother was crazy, unstable, even dangerous, and that 16 years ago she committed suicide while in the hospital’s mental ward. However, Abbie (Nicole Beharie) and Jenny (Lyndie Greenwood) will learn the real truth about their mother when new information surfaces.

"Sleepy Hollow" focuses on a resurrected Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison), who’s pulled two and a half centuries through time to unravel a mystery that dates all the way back to America’s founding fathers. Along for the wild ride is a modern-day cop, Lt. Abbie Mills (Beharie).

Orlando Jones, Katia Winter, and John Noble return, and joining the show this coming season are Timothy Busfield as Benjamin Franklin; Sakina Jaffrey as Sheriff Reyes, filling in for the incarcerated Frank Irving (Jones); Heather Lind as Mary Wells, Crane’s English ex straight out of the 18th century; and Matt Barr as Nick Hawley, an arms dealer who gets drawn into Ichabod and Abbie's work.

Season 2 of "Sleepy Hollow" will be an expanded 18 episodes, and we should have a synopsis for Episode 2.01 shortly - stay tuned! If you're still not quite caught up on Season 1, the Blu-ray and DVD arrive on September 16th.

    Thu, 08/14/2014 - 12:40

Taking a page from Tod Browning's cult classic Freaks, "American Horror Story: Freak Show" has hired the shortest woman in the world, Jyoti Amge, to appear as a character in the upcoming series.

Per Wikipedia, Amge (born 16 December 1993), a resident of Nagpur, India, is the world's smallest living woman according to the Limca Book of Records and Guinness Book of Records. On her 18th birthday she was officially declared the world's smallest woman by Guinness Book of Records with a height of 62.8 cm (2'6").

Her restricted height is due to a growth anomaly called achondroplasia.

Showrunner/exec producer Ryan Murphy shared the news via Twitter, including a photo of Amge with "AHS" star Jessica Lange.

Exclusive Film Blog - Week 1 with Spirt World Films' Creature Feature

    Tue, 08/12/2014 - 13:00

With regard to Spirit World Films' Creature Feature, Dread Central will be bringing you exclusive on-the-set coverage from Atlanta. This is SWF’s fifth feature in less than three years, their last two films, Realm of Souls and Buried Cain, having both been picked up for global distribution.

Spirit World is the brainchild of three talented indie trendsetters: Chase Smith, Lance Paul and Edward Boss. These Southerners are turning the game upside down on what the true meaning of indie global films are.

With films budgeted at less than 20k, their combined multi “hat-wearing” skills are proving that you don’t need a giant budget nor a Hollywood soundstage to create cult classics.

Over the next four weeks Spirit World will be giving us a glimpse of what goes into making movies on the fly, including exclusive first looks at the monsters soon to be taking over your theaters. Creature Feature is comprised of four short vignettes and one overall story that connects them all, similar to classics such as Creepshow and Trick 'r Treat.

Do clowns scare you? Have you ever looked at a scarecrow and wondered, "What if?" Are zombies or naked witches your thing? Or what about a good ole classic such as a werewolf? Have you ever heard of Gentleman “Springed Heel” Jack? If not, you will come October 2015!

The Creation of the Creature Feature

Coming out of their last drama, Buried Cain, the boys were wanting to get back to their roots and film another horror film. When they approach a new story they always pull from what scares them or what moves them to theaters for their favorite genre, Horror. Creature Feature is the love child of Lance and Chase after wetting themselves in The Conjuring last October and the three of them watching Trick 'r Treat only about 100 times. They wanted to create something that paid respect to not only the vignette way of telling a creepy story but also to the monster movies of there drive-in past. They also wanted to leave their own mark on the monsters living in our imaginations. That’s why when you see the zombie or the werewolf he won’t be your usual walking dead or howl at the moon regular.

Having such a great reverence and nostalgia for old monster movies and slasher films that I grew up on, I wanted to create something that would not only bring back those great memories for myself but also conjure up those same feelings inside the viewer of how it felt to watch those movies for the first time -without your parents knowing of course -while also taking it in a new direction for the younger generation...” Chase Smith (Writer, Director, Creator)

Once they had their idea planned they then went about the approach of figuring out how to make their creation stand alone and set a milestone. One thing about indie film making is that no matter the size of your crew you will always end up wearing many hats. Luckily for Spirit World, Partner Lance Paul had worked as a comic book/storyboard artist when he first came out to Hollywood. Adding this to the feature in their eyes just seemed like it should have always been there. I mean even the best horror movies have their roots in the Penny Dreadfuls of the early 1920’s and Marvel/DC’s Creep and Monster comics of the 50’s. Using the comic approach during editing and through scenes also added something to the feel of their budget (which all indie film makers want) but also allowed them to create amazing effects and save money.

“Everyone has seen a monster change.... But have they seen him start as live action human then change over the page of a comic and then freeze-frame back as the live action monster...” Lance Paul (Monster concept designer, Actor, Creator)

It also allowed them to add to the Creature Feature brand. By combining the same art panels and comic book covers from the movie, this allowed them to create a tag along graphic novel coming out later next year also. Which is something else your usual indie horror movie doesn’t consider.

    The Clown

Adding the killer clown to their vignettes was a given from day one. Growing up in the 80’s and early 90’s as child horror fans meant being introduced to such horror (and maybe a bit cheesy) classics like puppeteer turned director Stephen Chiodo’s Killer Clowns from Outer Space or Stephen Kings’ Penny Wise in IT. Both Chase and Lance wanted to take that same effect those clowns had on them as children but bring a more realistic and terrifying approach to modern filmgoers.

No one knows this more than the poor babysitter in the start of Creature Feature just trying to make a few dollars and hook up with her boyfriend one fateful Halloween night. Unfortunately for her, she takes the wrong job watching some kids with clown issues. Through out the night she is dealing with two little girls, horror movie fans themselves, crying about creepy clown nightmares. Of course the babysitter chalks it down to their father’s weird obsession with clown statues, but is that all it is?

Early in the process of development Chase and Lance got together to take a little from all of their favorite clowns and then add their own take on it. While researching clown makeup for the initial concept designs, Lance used a lot of the early clown designs from the 50’s. Especially an old black and white cereal commercial that featured a creepy clown promoting sugary cereal, just what should be selling it. Using the concepts and then meeting with their talented SFX makeup artist/Fabricator Alex-Michael Petty ("The Walking Dead") they were really able to bring their demented clown to life. Through this short vignette you will be able to see two forms of the clown, one as the sad “lifelike” clown statue and as he turns into full Creature Clown.

Playing the role took some casting effort on their part. Finding an actor willing to go through two different makeup visual effect processes plus find one with the talent to really pull off the role was daunting for them.

Some of the best acting you will see, are the actors that convey through facial emotions not words...” Lance Paul

Luckily Atlanta is full of a wealth of talent and they were able to find a convincing actor in the form of Michael Steigler. Once Creature Feature is released I’m sure Michael’s clown will be added to some of the creepiest Clowns to scare on the silver screen. Enjoy these first glimpses of the talent coming out of Atlanta with Spirit World Films. Stay tuned for next week as we get a glimpse into the Zombie and more in-depth expo on behind the camera true indie horror style!

For behind-the-scenes pictures by Producer and Creator Lance Paul, visit Lance Paul on Instagram, also "like" Creature Feature on Facebook, and follow Spirit World Films on Twitter.

Chase Smith directs. Libby Blanton, Tenille Houston, Stacia Hitt, Lance Paul, Stephanie Davis, and Jason Vail star.

    Synopsis:
Creature Feature is comprised of five interwoven tales of terror that occur one foggy Halloween night in Georgia. A babysitter learns a new appreciation for fine art and a hard lesson about the consequences of being irresponsible... and naughty! A group of college kids stumble on the mother of all scarecrows. Two teenagers are forced to steal from the wrong cantankerous old hermit who has been known to occasionally howl at the moon. A murdered father comes back for vengeance against his gold-digging wife and traitorous children. All of this Halloween fun is made possible by a London gentleman known only as... "Jack."

Horror Game Classic Night Trap May Be Getting a Remake

    Tue, 08/12/2014 - 12:30

There is a way to guarantee the success of anything that waves the horror flag... One simple word... “banned.” In 1992 this seal of disapproval led me, and countless other horror junkies, running to the video store to snag a copy of Night Trap, which is still fully available in Canada.

The former minds behind Night Trap are hoping to send us back into its world of depravity, as far as 1992 standards go, by initiating a Kickstarter campaign to re-master Night Trap. So far the project has garnered $7,339 of its $330,000 goal.

IGN reported that the high-definition elements of the game have already been transferred. The game was shot on 35mm film so it must simply be transitioned to a modern format, rather than be subject to extensive upscaling.

Night Trap is an interactive movie that follows a group of teens set for a weekend of fun in an isolated house. The player must protect them by watching over said house, through a series of security cameras, to save the teens from the game’s countless, “blood sucking creatures.” How do you do that? By utilizing the many traps at your disposal.

Should Night Trap reach its financial goal, it would be released on PC, Mac, Xbox and PlayStation. No word was given as to which Xbox and PlayStation consoles, however.

You can donate to Night Trap’s Kickstarter campaign here.

Exclusive: Writer Jeff Buhler Talks Remakes of The Grudge, Jacob's Ladder, and More on Pet Sematary

    Tue, 08/12/2014 - 12:00

We caught up last week with writer Jeff Buhler, who provided us with updates on his scripted remakes of The Grudge, Jacob’s Ladder, and director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s Pet Sematary reboot for Paramount.

Buhler, who is known to genre audiences for scripting 2008’s Clive Barker-inspired Midnight Meat Train and writing and directing that year’s feature Insanitarium, said of the script he penned of the remake of the 1990 film Jacob’s Ladder for LD Entertainment with director James Foley attached to helm, “The script has been finished for some time.”

“Foley’s enthusiasm is very high, and he’s coming to this project with a lot of ideas,” he expounded.

“From what I understand, when he was up for this job, he basically told [executive producer] Mickey Lidell that if they hired a different director, he would murder them. That’s the level of enthusiasm we are talking about.”

As for casting, “They are going after A-list names at present, and I think that there will be casting news imminently. They are pushing really hard to make it a really solid project.”

Regarding Ghost House Pictures’ re-launch of The Grudge series, the new film will be produced by Sam Raimi along with Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise. Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Joe Drake, and Nathan Kahane executive produce.

Of the status of both films, Buhler stated, “Both projects are looking very promising for a 2015 start. These things change on a dime, but there's a lot of momentum with both titles."

Buhler then stated with a chuckle, “I’m ‘remake guy’.”

“It’s funny because I never really thought of this as either a career strategy or as an artistic strategy, but what’s emerging having worked on The Grudge, Jacob’s Ladder, and now just starting Pet Sematary is that my approach is to respect the original but to find something original and fresh within that world; allow the project to evolve a little bit; and update the characters to a place where it fits into a new world where we understand it, identify with it, and it’s effective,” he said.

“It’s not like you are erasing the originals from the pantheon of horror films [by making a remake],” continued Buhler. “I understand that [as fans] we all feel a sense of ownership of the movies that we love so when someone comes in and starts tinkering with that stuff, it feels like you are being violated, but I ask the fans of the genre to sit back and relax until the movies come out, and check them out, to see if there’s something new in there that inspires you and that brings a new experience to watching that story. I honestly feel that with all three of these projects we’ll bring something to fans that they weren’t expecting and that they’ll find exciting and that they won’t feel that the original films have been exploited in any way.”

“Look, I feel the same way, and when I get a phone call that’s, ‘Hey, we are doing this remake,’ my initial reaction is, ‘Oh shit, really?’ But if there’s a way to tell that story through some modern context in today’s world and I can find that thing that clicks in that way, then I know in my heart it’s going to be fine.”

For more on the Pet Sematary remake, see our previous interview with Buhler here.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare Invades the Suburbs in New DLC

    Tue, 08/12/2014 - 11:30

There’s something so off-putting about the suburbs. The freshly mown grass, the flower beds, and oh yeah, zombies! The setting for some of David Lynch’s finest work is no longer hiding a dark secret; it has full-on Plants vs. Zombies warfare on display for all to see...

And it's in the form of the new Suburbination DLC. Best of all, it’s free.

The game's developers released a new trailer highlighting the features of the new chloroform vs. undead battle. Creative director Justin Wiebe explains the DLC’s map, entitled Crash Course, is “a dessert style suburbia on one side of the map and a golf course on the other side.” With a zombie horde crash landing right in the middle.

The Suburbination game mode will break down into teams battling for control of three areas of the map to attain a state of “suburbination.” Once the state is achieved, players will start earning a sizable amount of coins. Suburbination will also feature the fan-created Plasma Pea Shooter, a cosmic blue version of the game’s Pea Shooter character.

With each version of the game there must also be a new boss. Gamers who find themselves inside Suburbination will come face to morbid face with the master vampire, Baron Von Bats, a tricky Victorian vampire who utilizes dodge and warping techniques to vanquish any who oppose him. The DLC also features the Bling Pack, which offers shiny customization options to add to your horticultural heroes. Finally, the time of diamond mustaches has arrived.

No word has been given on a release date for the DLC, but Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is available now for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 and is arriving on both PlayStation consoles August 19th.

Cherie Priest's The Borden Dispatches Kick Off with the Lovecraftian Maplecroft

    Tue, 08/12/2014 - 11:00

Heading our way September 2nd is Maplecroft, the first book in the new "The Borden Dispatches" series from award-winning author Cherie Priest. It offers an inventive and daring take on the story of Lizzie Borden.

Maplecroft casts the infamous axe swinger not as a murderer, but as a hero struggling to save the world from an evil that lives in the ocean depths off the shores of Massachusetts. Think Lizzie Borden with elements from H.P. Lovecraft... how can you go wrong?

Priest made a name for herself in 2009 with Boneshaker, an ingenious mix of alternate history and zombie fiction that heralded the rebirth of steampunk. Hammer acquired the rights back in November 2011, but there hasn't been an update since the initial announcement. We'll keep our eyes open for more on that as well as future "Dispatches."

    Synopsis:
"Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother forty whacks; and when she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one..."

The people of Fall River, Massachusetts, fear me. Perhaps rightfully so. I remain a suspect in the brutal deaths of my father and his second wife despite the verdict of innocence at my trial. With our inheritance, my sister, Emma, and I have taken up residence in Maplecroft, a mansion near the sea and far from gossip and scrutiny. But it is not far enough from the affliction that possessed my parents. Their characters, their very souls, were consumed from within by something that left malevolent entities in their place. It originates from the ocean’s depths, plaguing the populace with tides of nightmares and madness.

This evil cannot hide from me. No matter what guise it assumes, I will be waiting for it. With an axe.

The Hungry Horde Brings Zombie Goodness to PS Vita

    Tue, 08/12/2014 - 10:00

During E3 2014 PlayStation reps said that a lot of the fan mail they receive is to request one thing: more zombies. Well, PlayStation responded, and the PS4 will receive two zombie games in 2015. And that’s just the ones that have already been announced.

But now the PS Vita is getting in on the act as The Hungry Horde was just announced for the handheld device. What makes The Hungry Horde so different from other zombie games is gamers will get a chance to be the zombies.

Players will “lead a horde of zombies on a manic mission to expand the ranks of the undead and destroy humanity.”

Little is known of the gameplay, but it appears your main goal is to chase down fresh humans to turn into zombies and expand your horde. To break up the action, the trailer does promise “seriously addictive mini-games,” providing a bit of variety to your time as the undead.

The Hungry Horde also offers customization options so you can select how your undead army will look before you unleash the zombie virus on their healthy, human flesh.

    Rest in Peace Robin Williams

    Mon, 08/11/2014 - 19:45

Shocking news is coming out of California today as legendary comedian Robin Williams has passed on at the age of 63. A pop culture icon in every conceivable way, Williams will forever be remembered for the millions of laughs he brought to the world... but there were a couple of screams as well.

In addition to his comedic stylings Williams never starred in a true horror movie, but he did flirt with the genre for sure in movies like Dead Again, Insomnia, and One Hour Photo that latter of which was absolutely chilling.

Suicide is suspected but as of yet unconfirmed.

Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late," his publicist said in a statement. "This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”

Williams was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor three times and took home an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in 1997’s Good Will Hunting.

At this time we here at Dread Central would like to offer our sincerest condolences to Robin's friends, family, and constituents. Thank you for all of the laughs and smiles you've given the world, Robin. It's a true shame that the world couldn't do the same for you. Hopefully now you have found peace. God bless you.

Gamescom: Kano's Back in Mortal Kombat X

    Mon, 08/11/2014 - 17:49

The cybernetic super criminal is back and in Mortal Kombat X, and he’s deadlier than ever. A brand new reveal trailer just surfaced one day ahead of Gamescom, and it brings fans an old school favorite. Kano is back.

The trailer shows Nether Realm’s new re-imagining of Kano in a fist-on-fist banquet of brutality with one of the game’s new characters, D’vorah, and this latest sneak peek gives gamers a brief glimpse into Kano’s three fighting styles:

    - With "Cutthroat" Kano uses his cybernetic heart to power massive attacks with two blades fat enough to give Jason knife envy.
    - "Cybernetic" style lets Kano use his eye-mounted laser and toss grenades, allowing him to control the fight from a distance.
    - "Commando" style allows Kano to utilize his Judo background by focusing on grappling and grounding opponents.

It all ends with a sneak peek of Kano's face-melting new fatality.

Mortal Kombat X's release date has not been announced yet, but with Gamescom starting tomorrow, that may change very quickly.

Brutalize the Undead in the New Dead Island 2 Trailer

    Mon, 08/11/2014 - 16:58

Morningstars, sledgehammers, chainsaws, and machetes... lots of machetes. The new gameplay trailer for Dead Island 2 showcases the raw brutality of unabashed hate crimes against the undead, delivered in a visceral style that only the Dead Island series can deliver.

Blood... man, that shit gets everywhere! And I mean everywhere. Every cut in this trailer reveals a fresh zombie getting stabbed, slashed, shot, bludgeoned, and stabbed again. Based on this trailer, gamers can expect to be slipping on blood and giggling with delight after a session with Dead Island 2.

Dead Island has always provided players with a hero’s arsenal of implements of sheer chaos, and today’s trailer really gave gamers some fun new toys to look forward to. It’s like a gore-filled Christmas morning. Forget church; there are zombies to decapitate!

Speaking of weapons, the trailer also promises three pre-order bonuses, all of which are in-game weapons that look like slaughter powerhouses: the katana, the classic sword; the home strike, a chain-covered mace; and the grinder, which looks like a weed hacker with engine blades.

No specific release date was given, but the trailer reveals that Dead Island 2 has a tentative release window of spring 2015.

Gamescom: Sony's New Horror Teaser May Hint at Virtual Reality

    Mon, 08/11/2014 - 16:53

Ice cracks, blood splats on the window, behind it a decrepit man swings a blade. Just one day before its Gamescom press conference, Sony has released a final teaser trailer.

While in the previous teasers horror was implied, today Sony flat out says, “Watch Horror Reinvented on PS4.”

With this third trailer, it appears increasingly likely that the game Sony is teasing is the slasher movie inspired Until Dawn. But there is a broader implication...

By claiming to "reinvent" horror, they may be hinting at an all-new platform for experiencing the genre. And that platform may very well be through virtual reality on Sony’s Project Morpheus. Sony may not only be announcing a fresh offering of terror, Gamescom may be the place that Sony officially unveils the much hyped virtual reality device and finally gives gamers a release date on Project Morpheus.

For those who have not decided on which next-gen system to buy, virtual reality may very well steer a large chunk of the fence sitters in Sony’s direction.
