Stunning Fan Art for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Game on the NES

Mon, 09/01/2014 - 16:42

In a perfect world we'd have seen all of our favorite horror movie villains star in their own games. In a SUPER-perfect world said games would actually have been good, too. Still, we can dream of taking control over our favorite maniac, and that's exactly what artist Blake Armstrong has done.

Below you'll see his version of what the artwork for a Nintendo Entertainment System game based on Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre would have looked liked.

Of course he made the common mistake of getting the title wrong as "chainsaw" is actually two words in the original's title, but hey, the artwork is bitchin' enough for us to overlook it!

Oh, the possibilities. Click here for more of Blake Armstrong's artwork.

It should be noted that their actually was a game based on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for the Atari 2600 home entertainment system in 1983 from Wizard Video Games, who put out several adult-themed games back then, including one based on Halloween.

In Wizard's game you are Leatherface and it's your job to hunt down and eviscerate a group of hapless tourists who are "trespassing" on your property. You're given three tanks of gasoline to power your chainsaw. You're always burning a little gas, but when you rev up the saw, you'll really go through it. Save gasoline for killing your victims or cutting away at the brush that occasionally blocks your progress. While you are chasing your victims, you must avoid various obstacles that will slow you down such as fences, cow skulls, and wheelchairs. For every victim you kill, you receive 1,000 points. Extra gas tanks are awarded for every 5,000 points. The game ends when you run out of gas.

By the way... they got the title of the movie wrong, too.

Labor Day Weekend Box Office Report: As Above/So Below Somewhere in the Middle

Mon, 09/01/2014 - 16:04

Those Guardians of the Galaxy continued to rule the box office this Labor Day weekend. So where did that leave the horror offering As Above/So Below and the 30th anniversary re-release of arguably the most influential horror comedy of a generation?

As Above/So Below managed to continue two trends at once. First, the Paris-set Universal/Legendary horror film marks the latest found footage movie promoted in such a way as to hope you didn't know that going in. Just how on the outs is the found footage genre that Hollywood marketers are now going out of their way to downplay the format?

As Above/So Below also continues the trend of wide release horror movies in 2014 not exactly lighting the box office on fire. Falling near the middle of the pack at #5 with an estimated $10.3 million for the Labor Day weekend, according to Box Office Mojo, that's just slightly more than previous Labor Day weekend horror releases Apollo 18 ($8.4 million) and Shark Night ($8.3 million). Oof!

Always fickle horror-goers gave the film a C- Cinemascore so this one might as well be buried in the Catacombs in which the film is set.

The 30th anniversary re-release of the comedy classic Ghostbusters finished outside the top ten in 15th place with $2.2 million. That's a bit above what Raiders of the Lost Ark's re-release did ($1.67 million), though not quite as impressive given Ghostbusters was released on over 700 screens and Raiders returned on less than 300. I'd still call that number notable given how widely available Ghostbusters is on every conceivable video format and VOD service.

Hey, maybe that bodes well for that upcoming 10th anniversary re-release of Saw. Most remarkable: I typed that last sentence with a straight face.

Aside from the upcoming fantasy thriller Innocence, the Fatal Attraction-esque No Good Deeds, and the young adult adaptation The Maze Runner, the genre takes the month of September off before returning the first week of October with the Conjuring spin-off Annabelle.

As Above/So Below director John Erick Dowdle (Quarantine, Devil) wrote the script with his brother, Drew. The film stars Ben Feldman, Perdita Weeks, and Edwin Hodge.

Zombeavers Cast and Crew Talk Using Practical Effects, Working in the Genre, Peeing in the Woods, and More!

Mon, 09/01/2014 - 11:00

Horror comedy Zombeavers (review) recently had its UK debut at Film4 FrightFest, but it hit Tribeca last spring for its world premiere, where we had a chance to chat with director and co-writer Jordan Rubin plus several members of the cast.

Stars Peter Gilroy, Rex Linn, Courtney Palm, Jake Weary, Rachel Melvin, and Lexi Atkins emerged from the Zombeavers onslaught to discuss acting in horror movies vs. watching them, the treasures to be found while peeing in the woods, and the ghostly presence of poor Old Yeller.

Additionally, Rubin (pictured above), a veteran of television comedy, joined in to talk about the technical considerations one must take into account when choosing between practical puppet zombeavers vs. CGI zombeavers.

Beware: A few spoilers for some classic movies that should be beyond spoiling by now are lurking in the below video, but there are no spoilers for Zombeavers itself.

Zombeavers is a horror comedy with hysterical interludes, gross-out gore, and old school animatronics. The flick will be releasing in the UK on Blu-ray and DVD on October 20, 2014.

Synopsis
A group of college students head out into the wilderness for spring break, unaware of the danger that lurks beneath the lake. Unbeknownst to the vacationers, a chemical spill has irreversibly altered the wildlife, and zombeavers are on the prowl. As a weekend of sex, drugs, and debauchery gets under way, the beavers close in on their prey; and the bloodthirsty beasts really do take the term ‘killer weekend’ to the next level.

Exclusive First Look at iPhone-Shot And Uneasy Lies the Mind

Mon, 09/01/2014 - 10:00

Indie filmmakers are some of the most creative folks to ever walk the planet, and that's why when something unique catches our eyes, we make sure to tell you about it. Case in point: the iPhone 5-shot feature And Uneasy Lies the Mind.

From the Press Release
Detention Films has announced that its latest production, Ricky Fosheim’s And Uneasy Lies the Mind, the first feature-length narrative film shot entirely on an iPhone, will be available nationwide on VOD from Gravitas Ventures.

And Uneasy Lies the Mind will be available to rent or own starting September 2nd on iTunes, Amazon Instant, Google Play, Vudu, Redbox Instant, and most cable operators across the United States and Canada.

Written by co-stars Jonas Fisch and Dillon Tucker, the film is told through the fragmented and traumatized memories of its protagonist following a brutal attack. The filmmakers embraced both the limitations and the powers of Apple’s mobile camera to create visuals that would reflect his state of mind.

The film debuted at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose this past March, and its main titles were showcased as part of this year’s SXSW Film Excellence in Title Design Awards alongside opening sequences from "True Detective," The Lego Movie, Pacific Rim, and "Masters of Sex."

Synopsis:
Peter (Fisch) is a freshly minted movie star. He has it all: wealth, fame, and a beautiful expecting wife, Julie (J’aime Leilani Spezzano). When the couple’s two best friends, Jack (Tucker) and Lauren (Michelle Nunes), join them at their new mountain mansion for Peter’s birthday, envy, secrets, and paranoia play out behind a barren, frigid winter landscape.

Soon the nostalgia and fake smiles crumble and the two couples grow increasingly antagonistic, turning to alcohol and drugs to bury the past. When Peter’s old friend Shawn (Isaac Nippert) shows up unexpectedly and covered in snow, Peter must scramble to protect his new life. The harder he fights to hold it all together, the faster he descends into a cavernous mental abyss. As the night grows late, Peter is forced to decipher reality from a twisting rabbit hole of truth and illusion.

L.A. Slasher Set to Terrorize Salt Lake Comic Con with Two Special Screenings

Sat, 08/30/2014 - 14:22

Social satire horror film L.A. Slasher is opening and closing the 2014 Salt Lake Comic Con, running September 4-6; and if you'll be there, we have all the details you need right here, including a look at the Con's guest list, which is pretty impressive considering it's only their second year.

L.A. Slasher, directed by Martin Owen and produced by Jeffrey Wright and Daniel Sollinger (Girls Against Boys, The Alphabet Killer), will have a special advance screening to open the festival and a midnight screening to close it out.

Salt Lake Comic Con 2013 was the largest first-year comic convention in North American history and the largest convention ever to take place in Utah. This year’s event will be held at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“We are thrilled that such an iconic event will be screening our film,” said L.A. Slasher producer Jeffrey Wright.

The film offers a tongue-in-cheek commentary of reality TV and the undue admiration for people who are famous for simply being famous. “[It] is definitely bound to make waves, and to screen at Salt Lake Comic Con is a very exciting experience for us all,” commented producer Daniel Sollinger.

The special advance screening of L.A. Slasher will include a panel. In attendance at the prestigious event will be director Owen, producers Wright and Sollinger, as well as several members of the notable cast, which includes Eric Roberts, Brooke Hogan, Abigail Wright, and Elizabeth Morris.

Along with the aforementioned Roberts, other SLCC 2014 guests of note for the horror crowd are Bruce Campbell, Ron Perlman, Eliza Dushku, Sam Witwer, Danny Glover, Cary Elwes, Charisma Carpenter, Ernie Hudson, Ian Ziering, James Hong, Eugene Clark, and Jim Wynorski. You'll also find Stan Lee, Barbara Eden, Giancarlo Esposito, Hulk Hogan, Lou Ferrigno, and "Arrow's" Stephen Amell and John Barrowman.

For more SLCC info and tickets, visit SaltLakeComicCon.com.

L.A. Slasher stars Danny Trejo (Machete), Mischa Barton (“The O.C.”), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Riddick), Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight), Drake Bell (“Drake & Josh”), Brooke Hogan (“Hogan Knows Best”), Tori Black (Not Another Celebrity Movie), and Marisa Lauren (“Superhero Movie”) with the voice of Andy Dick (“NewsRadio”) as the "L.A. Slasher."

Synopsis
Produced by Jeffrey Wright and Daniel Sollinger, L.A. Slasher is a biting social satire about reality TV and the glorification of people who are famous for simply being famous. It explores why it has become acceptable and even admirable for people to become influential and wealthy based on no merit or talent - purely through notoriety achieved through shameful behavior.

Incensed by the tabloid culture which celebrates it, the "L.A. Slasher" publicly abducts a series of reality TV stars while the media and general public in turn begin to question if society is better off without them.

Sat, 08/30/2014 - 10:30

More speculation about a possible Blade 4, starring a newly rejuvenated Wesley Snipes, is swirling around the Internet thanks to his recent well regarded return to the big screen in The Expendables 3, and we have the latest for you here.

This tidbit of information comes from the Confidenti@l gossip column of the New York Daily News so no telling how concrete it is, but according to the site Wesley Snipes is set to reprise his lead role in a new installment of Blade for $3 million plus a cut of the profits.

The likelihood of the project getting the green light is “looking good” according to sources close to the actor.

Not a lot to go on, but we'll keep our eyes and ears open for more as it comes.

The three Blade films released thus far (Blade, Blade II, Blade: Trinity) are based on the fictional Marvel Comics character of the same name. They were written by David S. Goyer, Marv Wolfman, and Gene Colan and directed by Stephen Norrington, Guillermo del Toro, and Goyer respectively, and distributed by New Line Cinema. Per Wikipedia, their combined worldwide gross was over $400 million.

New Lords of the Fallen Trailer Is Devilishly Cryptic

Fri, 08/29/2014 - 15:59

“Only evil can destroy evil,” remarks the stoic narrator in a glimpse into the hidden secrets and living world of the upcoming action RPG Lords of the Fallen. Check out this latest trailer.

A red mist in a moonlit forest, a dungeon of torment, dizzying hilltop grottos... the new video is meant to showcase some of the settings found in Namco Bandai’s upcoming game. But what is truly intriguing is the trailer’s cryptic monologue, delivered by a brogue-voiced, mysterious narrator and revealing brief glimpses of some of the details surrounding the game.

It has been known since the game’s announcement that its anti-hero, Harkyn, would be battling an awakened god; and today’s trailer put a name to that ancient evil, Rhogar.

The voice speaks of an abandoned temple and that it is the gateway to Rhogar’s realm. This may indicate that the game will feature two realms: one of the living and one of the god Rhogar. This idea is further hinted at as the voice speaks of traveling to alternate dimensions.

"Find out the truth about the war." The storyline for Lords of the Fallen has long been known to be that of ancient evil gods returning to Earth and humanity looking to former criminals to save them. But these brief quotes reveal another layer to the story, adding depth beyond the simplistic goal of hunting down the bad guys.

The trailer also hints that the game may have multiple endings, as the narrator states, “There is no single end to your journey.”

Lords of the Fallen will be available on October 28th for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Those who pre-order the game will receive a free upgrade to the limited edition, which includes the game’s soundtrack, the Monk’s Decipher DLC, and the Demonic Weapons Pack DLC.

Dread Central 1 on 1: Sideshow Collectibles and Hot Toys' Elder Predator Movie Masterpiece Series Sixth Scale Figure

Fri, 08/29/2014 - 15:41

The holidays came early to the Dread Central offices when Sideshow Collectibles and Hot Toys sent over their Elder Predator Movie Masterpiece Series Sixth Scale Figure for us to comb over.

First and foremost one thing was immediately apparent... this is not your standard action figure despite its multiple points of articulation which are there only to afford you, the collector, the ability to pose this bad boy to your liking. Each and every figure is hand-cast, assembled, and dressed by the manufacturer.

Given the price tag of $224.99, we don't expect you'll be handing this over to junior to throw around with reckless abandon. No, this is a piece purely meant for display.

Standing about 14" tall, the Elder Predator is one of the single most stunningly detailed pieces we've seen in some time, and it is completely screen accurate as seen in 1990's Predator 2. It's all here down to the most minute of details. The old time gun, the dreadlock clip, the space machete, and oh those glorious signature retractable claws. The figure comes with interchangeable hands that can be swapped out easily so you can decide which bits of weaponry you want your Predator to be brandishing, if any at all. From top to bottom this baby is gorgeous.

If there's anything negative to say about it, it's that getting a lot of the accessories on this bad boy is a bit nerve-wracking as they're delicate as they come. Take the necklaces, for example; they're strung with the thinnest of strings that feel as if they'd just snap if the wrong amount of tension or pressure is applied accidentally. My best advice here is DO NOT dress this thing on your own. Consult the manual as it illustrates the easiest way to get everything on and off.

The bottom line is this... if you're a Predator fan or a collector, this is something you'll not just want... it's something you will NEED!

If you have the scratch, do yourself a favor and order this one NOW! It's totally worth the price tag! Highly endorsed and recommended!

Product Summary
Sideshow Collectibles and Hot Toys are proud to announce the Elder Predator Movie Masterpiece Series Sixth Scale Figure. This fan favorite hunter from Predator 2 features highly detailed armor, weapons, and accessories and will be the perfect addition to horror/sci-fi collections worldwide!

Ever since NECA released an NES-inspired Jason Voorhees figure at Comic-Con last year, purple and blue Jason has been absolutely EVERYWHERE, turning in one single year from zero to hero.

And the unexpected revival of the character's most oddball incarnation is showing no signs of slowing down, as NECA has just unveiled a full-size replica mask based on the game.

Teased at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, we've now got a full look and more details about the mask, which will glow in the dark - much like the mask worn by the company's sought after 8-bit action figure.

The hand-painted reproduction features elastic harness straps that allow you to wear it or hang it on the wall. As a bonus, it comes in unique, game-inspired packaging.

Unfortunately, the mask isn't due out until November, which makes it a no-go for this year's Halloween. Sad face.

I'm typically against cool ideas being milked to death, but in the case of this particular one, I say keep the products coming!

Stan Lee Gets Fit for Kevin Smith's Yoga Hosers

Fri, 08/29/2014 - 14:56

As he recently announced, Yoga Hosers will be the second film in Kevin Smith's Canada-set "True North Trilogy," which kicks off this year with Tusk. Now that principal photography is under way, Smith has revealed that an old friend is along for the ride. Read on!

Earlier this week Kevin Smith took to his Twitter account to confirm the Yoga Hosers involvement of the legendary Stan Lee, whom he had previously directed in Mallrats.

Per the picture he tweeted out, it looks like Lee will be playing a police officer in the film, though we don't yet know if he'll have a major role or just one of his trademark cameos.

The entire cast of Tusk is returning for Yoga Hosers, including Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez, Ralph Garman, Jennifer Schwalbach, and Harley Morenstein. New to the cast are Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Austin Butler, Adam Brody, Tyler Posey, and Jason Mewes.

Yoga Hosers, written by Smith, centers on 15-year-old yoga nuts Colleen Collette (Lily-Rose Depp) and Colleen McKenzie (Harley Quinn Smith), who have an after-school job at a Manitoba convenience store called Eh-2-Zed. When an ancient evil rises from beneath Canada’s crust and threatens their big invitation to a Grade 12 party, the Colleens join forces with a legendary man-hunter from Montreal named Guy Lapointe (Depp) to fight for their lives with, according to the producers, “all seven Chakras, one Warrior Pose at a time.”

The characters of the convenience store clerks appear briefly in Tusk.

20 years ago, I got a chance to direct @TheRealStanLee in MALLRATS. Last night, I got to do it again for @YogaHosers! pic.twitter.com/LTGTB06cYr
