B-Sides: Trying to Make Money with a Foosball Film Was the Real Longshot

Sat, 03/30/2013 - 11:30

If you’ve listened to the newest Foycast, then you’ve already heard me discuss in detail the 1981 obscurity Longshot - the world’s only foosball movie. Odds are you’ll never see this film, but in this B-Sides you can experience the magic of its title song and dramatic final shot.

In Foycast XIII: Marching into Madness, I dissected Longshot in more detail than probably anyone has in over 30 years. For those that haven’t listened, what we’re talking about here is a coming-of-age underdog sports flick based around the game of foosball. Yes, foosball. Someone actually made a foosball movie.

Longshot was directed by E.W. Swackhamer and starred past-his-prime teen idol Leif Garrett as a California dude who wanted to go to Europe with his best friend to become soccer players because they knew nobody in America gave a damn about soccer in 1981. But before they can go become Euro soccer sensations, they have to pay their way overseas, and to accomplish that, all they have to do is win the $50,000 National Foosball Championships in Las Vegas - or was it Lake Tahoe? To pay for the trip to the tournament, they first have to win a whole bunch of local foosball tournaments. When the friend breaks his hand, they recruit a tomboyish teenage foosball hustler who proves to be as big of a pain as she is a whiz at the game of table football.

Yes, this movie actually exists. Someone actually produced it and most assuredly lost money on it.

Leif Garrett provided a couple of songs for the soundtrack, but not the film’s title track, which is heard during the opening and closing credits and multiple times in between. The people who made Longshot must have really loved this song it gets so much airplay.

“Longshot” is performed by Marie Cain. I don’t know much about her other than her IMDB resume that tells me this may not be her last B-Sides appearance, having also performed songs for the films Repossessed and Aces: Iron Eagle III. Now enjoy her song from the opening credits of Longshot.

As an extra added bonus, I’ve also included a brief clip of the dramatic conclusion of the big championship game at the end of Longshot. Quite amazing how even when making a film about the silliest of games, the filmmakers still worked in the ultimate sports movie cliché: the slo-mo final shot.

Indie Horror Month 2013: Dig the Twisted Details on In a Madman's World

Fri, 03/29/2013 - 10:15

Indie director Josh Vargas had decided to make his latest flick into one helluva memorable experience. Check out the details below, as described by Vargas himself, about the twisted subject matter of In a Madman's World.

About In A Madman's World
"The movie I just finished, called In a Madman's World, is based entirely on the Dean Corll/Wayne Henley/David Brooks serial killings of the early 1970's in Houston, TX," Vargas said. "The film will be told from the perspective of 15-year old, Wayne Henley, who, with another teenager, led teenage boys into the hands of, Dean Corll, a sexual sadistic serial killer.

"I researched the case for two years before I wrote the script and shot the movie. I've acquired and studied the entire case file and read the entire court transcript. I've spent over 50 hours interviewing Wayne Henley in prison and have two year's worth of written Q&A sessions with him. I was also put in contact with his family who took me to the place they had stored all of his former belongings. They gave us everything from his old clothes (which the actor playing him in the movie wears), posters and other contents from his bedroom, and photographs. In a sealed photo envelope, we found a series of pictures that included that of a young boy handcuffed and on the floor. It was determined by the medical examiner's office to be an unknown victim."

Vargas reports the movie is at the tail end of its editing phase and should be picture locked by midsummer. While it was shot is as a crime drama/biography, Vargas figured horror fans might dig it because, the case itself and how the film came to be made are both "…fucking weird as hell."

The cast includes Chris Binum (Apart) as Wayne Henley, Bobby Haworth as David Brooks, Joe Grisaffi as Dean Corll, Parrish Randall (The Quick And The Undead) as Elmer Henley, Sr., Sara Gaston as Mary Henley, Bree Bond as Lisa and the legendary Marilyn Burns (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre) as Mrs. Hill. The character Marilyn Burns plays is that of a mother who's driven to the brink of insanity by the disappearance of her teenaged son, David, a childhood friend of, Wayne Henley. According to Vargas, "She gave an amazing performance that harkened back to her performance in Helter Skelter."

A Smoking New One-Sheet for Amazon's Zombieland TV Pilot

Thu, 03/28/2013 - 21:35

Hot on the heels of the first official still from Amazon's "Zombieland" pilot comes the first official teaser poster! Is this a sign that there are some good, funny, and violent things upon the horizon? Let's hope so!

From the Press Release
Amazon Studios, the original movie and series production arm of Amazon.com, announced it will add cult classic Zombieland to the line-up of pilots already in production for Prime Instant Video. Zombieland, which is the seventh comedy pilot added to Amazon’s pilot line-up, will be made available (along with the other six comedy pilots and six children’s pilots) for free on Amazon Instant Video and LOVEFiLM UK. Customers are invited to view the pilots and then review them on the site; customer feedback will help determine which of the 13 pilots Amazon Studios will make into full-season productions, to air on Prime Instant Video.

“Zombieland is a fan favorite and we can’t wait to see where this storyline goes in a serialized format,” said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. “We’ve been announcing a lot of exciting exclusive content for Prime Instant Video, like Downton Abbey, Under the Dome, and Justified; and we think adding original shows to that lineup is going to make Prime even more enticing for customers.”

Zombieland is based on the hit Columbia Pictures movie of the same name and finds four survivors outwitting zombies and searching for a place to call home. The Zombieland pilot comes from the feature film’s original creative team, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Joe Schmo Show), and producer Gavin Polone (Gilmore Girls, Curb Your Enthusiasm). Eli Craig (Tucker and Dale vs. Evil) is directing the pilot.

The part of Tallahassee will be played by Kirk Ward (The Island), Maiara Walsh ("Desperate Housewives," "Switched at Birth") is cast as Wichita, Tyler Ross (Milkshake) will play Columbus, and Izabela Vidovic has the role of Little Rock.

“Zombieland will strive to break the rules—action, adventure, thrills, chills and laughs and all packed into a half hour format,” said creator Paul Wernick. “This is not your average show, but Amazon is not your average network.”

Amazon Studios, the original movie and series production arm of Amazon.com, has begun production on six comedy pilots, Alpha House, Browsers, Dark Minions, Onion News Empire, Supanatural and Those Who Can’t. Additionally, six children’s series are also currently in production, including Creative Galaxy, Oz Adventures, Teeny Tiny Dogs, Tumbleaf, Sara Solves It, and The Untitled J.J. Johnson Project.
