Adam Green and Joe Lynch Open The Movie Crypt Podcast; Commentary for Friday 2 Included

Mon, 05/06/2013 - 19:59

Adam Green is a man with too much going on, and yet he keeps on going. Rather than use his weekly two hours of free time for sleep, he's now launched his latest project - The Movie Crypt Podcast - with his partner in crime, Joe Lynch!

From Adam Green's Blog on ArieScope
With both "HOLLISTON" Season 2 and HATCHET III about to come out in June (within just 10 days of each other), there is certainly a blog on its way about those projects. We’re even launching a brand spanking new ArieScope.com in a few weeks with a merchandise store- hopefully on-line and ready to go by June 1st if all goes as planned. In the meantime, in the middle of all of the press, touring, appearances, conventions, and premiere screenings- what better time than now to launch a PODCAST?

I know, I know. ”A podcast”, you say? If you’re like me, you probably feel like podcasts have become the new Facebook pages. Everyone seems to have one and the internet has become cluttered with so many different options to listen to people ramble on and on about one thing or another. But having guested on quite a few now and having heard some truly terrific ones, when Geek Nation mentioned they’d love to have me do a podcast for them, it didn’t take a hell of a lot of convincing. In fact, within 24 hours- we had it set up and our first recording scheduled. Given that "HOLLISTON" has a storyline about “Adam” and “Joe” hosting a late night cable access horror show called THE MOVIE CRYPT, it only made sense to bring that idea to life. So today, Episode 1 of THE MOVIE CRYPT with Adam Green and Joe Lynch will launch on Geek Nation’s website.

So what makes our podcast unique? After all, there are already some terrific genre related podcasts out there- even on Geek Nation’s roster alone. THE BLOOD CAST and KILLER POV (both hosted by dear friends of ours and both terrific podcasts) not only already exist on Geek Nation, but Joe and I will both be guesting on KILLER POV very soon. Where our podcast is different is that despite its title, THE MOVIE CRYPT is actually not going to always be about the horror genre. Of course we’ll be heavy on the horror since that is what we know, love, and are best known for, but overall this podcast is meant to serve as an open diary of the lives of two real working filmmakers. Not only will the podcast focus on the specific projects that we have both in release and in production (while "HOLLISTON" is airing a good portion of each podcast will be dedicated to discussing the most current episode), but also our personal tales from the trenches and stories of how these projects actually get made and what happens with them afterwards. Think of it as a weekly Q&A from a film festival screening or a press junket- only without the press. Completely casual and off the cuff, often times with notable special guests (actors, filmmakers, producers, composers, agents, cinematographers) all bringing their own personal perspective to this crazy business we live and work in. We’ll also have episodes dedicated to music and the bands that we love. Toys, comics, conventions, artwork… if we’re into it, we’ll talk about it. For something REALLY special, from time to time Joe and I are even going to offer full-length feature fan-commentary tracks to films we did not make or have anything to do with. Here’s where that idea came from…

In 2009, Joe and I were both asked to participate in a documentary about the FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise and legacy called HIS NAME WAS JASON. While I was slightly apprehensive given that I personally have nothing to do with the FRIDAY franchise, it made sense given that the filmmakers were interviewing not only those involved with the actual FRIDAY films but also those influenced by FRIDAY and those who also work in the beloved slasher genre who could (somewhat) intelligently comment on it. Really, it was quite an honor to even be asked. The interviews each lasted an hour and were an absolute blast, but both Joe and I assumed we’d be reduced to a quick sound byte or two in the actual documentary. If you’ve seen HIS NAME WAS JASON you’d know that was not the case in the finished product and for one reason or another we were featured quite heavily with our comical quips and enthusiastic fandom for FRIDAY THE 13TH and Jason Voorhees. Flattering? Absolutely. But I’d be lying if I said that we both didn’t quickly call each other after viewing the documentary for the first time and say, “Oh no.” I mean, think about that documentary from a fan’s perspective. When you purchased it, did you really want to hear the guys who (at the time) had only made HATCHET, SPIRAL and WRONG TURN 2 go on and on about the franchise? Probably not. We were very concerned that WE would be blamed for our overexposure in it somehow even though we were merely interview subjects for it and had no say in the finished product or what was used in it. Thankfully, given the lighthearted nature of HIS NAME WAS JASON, we didn’t receive the backlash we feared. In fact, we heard from so many FRIDAY fans that they enjoyed our comments because they felt the same way that we did about the films. You can only imagine our relief. But out of that experience (and before we ever saw HIS NAME WAS JASON completed), producer/director Dan Farrands approached us about doing a “fan commentary” for Paramount’s FRIDAY THE 13TH PART IV: THE FINAL CHAPTER re-issue on DVD that he was producing for the studio. Given that the commentary would be titled just that - a “fan commentary”- we jumped at the chance. I think we even started it off by saying something to the effect of ”we have no business being here but how could we not pay our respects to a film we both love so dearly when asked to?” Lo and behold that commentary became a huge hit with FRIDAY THE 13TH fans around the world and we constantly hear from fans asking if we will ever do another. So… 4 years later we figured… why not?

The inaugural episode of THE MOVIE CRYPT features a full-length fan commentary of FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2. A movie that is easily tied for “favorite of the franchise” in my book and also the very first horror movie that I can remember seeing (at the tender age of 7). To say I love it would be an understatement. I’m kind of MADLY in love with it. If I could make-out with a movie- FRIDAY 2 would be on my list. Hey, if you’re gonna launch a new podcast in a sea of podcasts, why not start off with a bang and give our fans something they have been asking for?

Now, I know the next two questions are: “Will every podcast include a commentary?” And… “Will you guys do the entire FRIDAY THE 13TH series eventually?” The answer is - no, we will not always be doing a commentary track with every episode. And as far as the second question goes – maybe. Perhaps by the time we hang up our microphones and end this new endeavor we’ll have hit all of the FRIDAY movies- but we have a TON of other movies that we love and respect and that we’d love to do fan commentary tracks for. Also to be honest, neither Joe or I feel comfortable pulling a MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER on a movie we did not make. (For that very reason THE MOVIE CRYPT will never feature “reviews” of other filmmakers’ work. Who are WE to say anything negative or critical about someone else’s work?) And as every FRIDAY fan knows… some of the entries were certainly more “miss” than “hit” if we want to put it in Battleship terms. So we’ll see what happens. If we think we have enough praise (and fanboy information) to bestow upon a movie like JASON GOES TO HELL- then maybe someday we’ll do it. But right now we’re honestly more excited about doing commentary tracks for movies like STAND BY ME, E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL (my favorite movie of all time), LOVE ACTUALLY (a movie that Joe and I once got busted verbally sexually assaulting in the pit at a Metallica show when we realized the other Metallica fans standing around us were not only listening in to our conversation- but also knew exactly who we were and were MASSIVELY let down to hear us discussing a romantic comedy together), and even BATTLESHIP (a movie that is absolutely criminally underrated and that unfairly received heaps of negativity thrown its way last year by people that I can only imagine never gave it a chance). But the fan-commentary tracks will be surprises and it could wind up being a while before we do another one. I have no idea what we’ll be in the mood for on a particular week.

I hope you enjoy THE MOVIE CRYPT. Whether you’re a filmmaker, an aspiring filmmaker, or maybe just a fan of what we do and a fan of our chemistry together as enthusiastic geeks ourselves- this is meant to entertain. Who knows how long it will last? As you know, I like to keep changing it up and trying different things. However long it remains fun to do- we’ll be doing it. How will Joe and I continue to do it when we’re both in production on our various projects? Not entirely sure. For now let’s just roll with it and see what happens.

Oh, and next week’s guest is the lovely Danielle Harris. You’re welcome.

Listen to Episode 1 here.

Mon, 05/06/2013 - 19:35

Michael Biehn Dishes on the Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Sequel

Mon, 05/06/2013 - 18:52

We had the chance to sit down with the great Michael Biehn recently to talk about all things badass, and of course the subject of Ubisoft's latest game which he does the voice acting for, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, came up. So what does Biehn know about a possible sequel? Read on!

Below is a quick excerpt! Look for the whole interview tomorrow!

Regarding a possible sequel Biehn said, "I don't know anything. If they do a sequel, that is [Creative Director] Dean [Evans]' decision. For all I know it might not have anything to do with me, and he might make a completely different game. I had thought I heard someone say something about a sequel, but I really don't know anything about it, which means if there was one, then I don't know if I would be involved. I don't know anything about what the subject matter would be or what it would be like. He never discussed with me about a sequel. I just kind of overheard someone talking about it actually, and it was probably a conversation I shouldn't have heard."

Biehn continues, "So I don't know if there is going to be a sequel or not. A couple of game sites have come out and said there is going to be a sequel, and I am quoted as saying there is going to be a sequel. I probably shouldn't have said that from just overhearing what someone else was talking about while we were doing the voice-over work. I could be totally wrong about that."

Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon lets players get the girl, kill the bad guys and save the world in a VHS-era vision of the future! As Sergeant Rex Colt, you are part man, part machine, all American. You are a state-of-the art Mark IV cyber-commando on a mission...of vengeance. You’re out to bring down your old commanding officer and his battalion of ruthless killer cyborgs and you’ll stop at nothing to get the job done. Hollywood action icon Michael Biehn (The Terminator, Aliens, and The Abyss), returns in this explosive 1980s style sci-fi vision of a dark future. Turn off your VCR, plug in your video game cabinet, and get ready to experience all of the thrills of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, releasing May 1, 2013 as a stand-alone digital title. All PC pre-orders will receive a free copy of the soundtrack by Power Glove. And yes, we do have Blood Dragons shooting lasers from their eyes!

You are Sergeant Rex Colt: Mark IV Cyber Commando. The year is 2007 and Earth has been ravaged by a nuclear war which erupted in the 90s. The east vs. west conflict has raged for generations, and humanity continues to struggle to progress after a disastrous decade. New paths for peace must be found, and the US cyborg army may have found a solution: a powerful bioweapon on a distant island. Your mission is to gather information and figure out what the hell is going on.

Exclusive Event Report: Dread Central Hosts a Private Screening of MoniKa

Mon, 05/06/2013 - 16:20

Held Thursday, May 2nd, in Hollywood, CA, the Dread Central co-sponsored private industry screening of Steven R. Monroe’s Monika was a resounding success. Read on for photos from the carpet and a few comments from star and co-executive producer Cerina Vincent.

In attendance at the event held at The Lot/Audio Head (in addition to the free-flowing wine from Sarzotti Vineyard) were Vincent (Cabin Fever) and writer/director/producer Monroe as well as MoniKa co-stars Jason Wiles ("Third Watch") and Daytime Emmy nominee and winner Jeff Branson ("Guiding Light," I Spit on Your Grave) and the film's executive producer Aaron Hofmann. Other industry appearances included Shaun Menzie (The Victorville Massacre), Bill Millsap (Jurassic Block), Barbara Nedeljakova (Hostel, Isle of Dogs), Carlee Baker (The Woman), Ryan Dillon (Littlerock) and producer Clinton H. Wallace (Blue Dream).

Prior to the screening and subsequent enthusiastic response to the stylized revenge/thriller (which is slated for a fall 2013 release and also stars Andrew Howard, Elisa Donovan, C. Thomas Howell, Chad Linberg and Lew Temple), we chatted with Vincent on the carpet regarding her experience with MoniKa.

“She's a pretty bad-ass character and very different than anything I've played before, so that was a blast and a challenge at the same time,” Vincent stated of the titular blonde, gun-toting character which she portrays. “MoniKa’s a tough chick,” she continued, “and she keeps her emotions inside. She’s stoic and laser-focused on her mission: to get revenge on the bad guys. She's passionate, too, but not in an emotional way. She's controlled, calculated, and although she's on a mission for revenge, she's at peace with her reality. This is so opposite than who I am as a person. I’m a huge romantic. I'm incredibly sensitive and emotional. I want to cry at everything. Not in a crazy way, but in an ‘everything tugs on my heartstrings’ kind of way.”

“So it was a challenge to maintain that stoic sensibility,” Vincent mused. “There were moments where I felt MoniKa would be rather emotional, but Steven would cut and remind me that MoniKa doesn't cry. Cerina cries. Monika is a bad-ass. So it was a challenge, but I really enjoyed it and am so grateful for the role.”

Of her decidedly different look in the film, “Audiences can expect to not recognize me,” she stated with a laugh. “I’m platinum blonde in it! And it's not a wig! It was sixteen hours of straight bleach. It was pretty crazy. And yes! There is lots of gun-play in the film, and it was so much fun. Steven made me go through some serious gun training for months before the shoot so that I was comfortable, and I got more than comfortable. I ended up really growing to love shooting. Like my character, I grew up in the desert in Nevada. Not to get political, but we're a huge Democratic family, but my dad does have a ton of guns, and I think he's finally happy that I love to shoot [them]. I didn't dig it as much as a little girl, but after playing the role of Monika, I can honestly say I really enjoy it.”

While Vincent has worked three times with Monroe previously as an actress (in 2005’s It Waits, 2006’s Sasquatch Mountain, and 2008's Complacent), MoniKa was her first foray as a co-executive producer.

”It was very interesting,” she reflected of that experience. “The tough part is the huge sense of responsibility you have to make sure that the film a success. You want your investors happy, the cast to be happy, and the fans to be happy. I may not sleep soundly until I know all three of those things have been accomplished! The beauty of being a producer on this, though, was seeing the art come to life. Steven sent me this script about eight years ago, and being a part of taking it from just words on a page to being on set with one hundred people having good, fun work was a great feeling. I’m grateful for the experience, and I want to do more, learn more, and create more.”

As for distribution plans, “All of the details are getting finalized now, but audiences can expect to get it this fall!” stated Vincent. “I’m excited for the world to see it. It's a really fun movie. Great characters. Kind of a mind-trip. It’s stylized and cool, and all of the actors are phenomenal in it! Fans will recognize some of their genre favorites. Jason Wiles rocks it as the lead; Jeff Branson, who was just nominated for an Emmy, is intense and totally killed it. Andrew Howard, C. Thomas Howell, and Lew Temple all bring some comedy with their quirky characters. Everyone is so great. And one of my best friends (who plays my best friend), Elisa Donovan, who is famous for her comedy, is stellar, edgy, and sexy as hell. And Monroe's writing and directing is just fabulous. It's a fun film. It's eerie, sexy, funny, bloody, action-packed, and keeps you guessing. I think fans are really gonna dig it."

Regarding what’s next for the actress in the horror genre, “I’ve got a few things cooking that I'm really excited about,” Vincent told us. “I've been working with a group of dear friends and great filmmakers, and we are writing, producing, and shooting short films. We have one horror picture that will be out this Halloween and most likely be at some fun genre film festivals. It's called Skypemare. I star in it along with two of my dear friends, Ryan Dillon and Annika Marks, and it’s directed by another dear friend, the very talented John Fitzpatrick. We have a great team in place, and we are all genuine friends. I'm actually writing a horror/thriller feature for us to shoot this summer. Fingers crossed that all goes as planned. There will be more on Skypemare soon. I think fans are going to love it!”

Dread Central thanks Hell’s Belles filmmaker Christian Ackerman for shooting the event (with additional photo credit going to Clinton H. Wallace/Photomundo International).

Synopsis
The film is a violent, edgy ride focusing on the forlorn Reagan Tyler, a man who is troubled by visions and premonitions that ultimately lead him to Las Vegas. It's there that Reagan meets the beautiful and mysterious Monika, a young woman who turns out to have been killed the night before he even met her. Reagan is then forced to put the puzzle together of what happened, how she is still present, and help Monika with her revenge on the killers of her younger sister.

Jeff Katz and AIP Remaking Horror Classics

Mon, 05/06/2013 - 16:02

Viking Women & The Sea Serpent, The Brain Eaters, She-Creature, Teenage Caveman, The Undead, War of the Colossal Beast, and The Day the World Ended. These are a few of my favorite things, and they're now getting remade and more!

According to Deadline, Jeff Katz, Lou Arkoff, and Hal Sadoff plan to remake 10 titles in the Arkoff/Nicholson library of American International Pictures-produced 1950’s classics. Usually the mere idea of remakes sends shivers of woe down our spines, but given the talent involved and the love that I know they have for these projects, we couldn't be happier.

Getting the redux treatment are the following 1950's drive-in classics: Girls in Prison, Viking Women & The Sea Serpent, The Brain Eaters, She-Creature, Teenage Caveman, Runaway Daughters, The Undead, Cool & The Crazy, The Day the World Ended, and my personal favorite, The War of the Colossal Beast. Please.... please... PLEASE... keep the same make-up design for that one!

AIP was founded in 1954 by Samuel Z. Arkoff and James H. Nicholson and churned out 500 low-budget indies for teens that included the Beach Party series with Frankie Avalon and the late Annette Funicello as well as the early films of director Roger Corman. In 1979 AIP merged with Filmways, which later was folded into Orion Pictures. Currently the rest of the library is owned by MGM, Orion’s successor. Arkoff, son of Samuel, had previously produced remakes of AIP titles for Showtime’s "Rebel Highway" series in the 1990′s.

My filmmaking heroes growing up were men like Arkoff, Castle, Corman, and Shaye,” Katz explained. “This series of movies is really meant as a tip of the hat to that sort of attitude. It’s not every day you get the opportunity to create a brand new universe out of old school titles, and I feel incredibly fortunate and honored to get to play in the AIP sandbox.

More on this soon!

Script Review for The Crow Reboot a Letdown?

    Mon, 05/06/2013 - 14:22

When it comes to script reviews for upcoming films that haven't even begun filming yet, you have to take the info with a grain of salt as anything can and will change. Our friends over at Latino Review got their hands on the script for Javier Gutierrez's remake of The Crow, and their reaction isn't pretty.

Luke Evans has been tapped by Relativity Media to star as Eric Draven in the story based on the James O'Barr comic book series that was previously adapted as a 1994 Miramax movie starring Brandon Lee. In case you're one of the ten people on the planet who haven't seen the original, it follows a man who returns from beyond the grave to avenge his death.

Ed Pressman of Pressman Film and Kevin Misher of Misher Films are producing with Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh and Jeff Most. Dan Farah of Farah Films will executive produce with Relativity's Tucker Tooley.

    Lowlights Per Latino Review

  • Eric Draven is now a Christian police officer instead of a musician
  • Quotes Bible verses from memory
  • Casts no reflection, paints his face to reflect, wears a tuxedo
  • Has ghost powers - can walk through walls and possess people to use their bodies
  • Has Wolverine-like powers - can heal, jump far and high, etc.

    Look for more soon.
