Mrs. Voorhees Gets Her Own Printable 8-Bit NES Mask

Thu, 09/18/2014 - 21:51

Last week we shared with you a fan-made 8-bit Jason Voorhees mask that you could print out right in the comfort of your own home, which was a truly awesome gift for those with nostalgic feelings of lovin’ towards the Friday the 13th Nintendo game. But what about the franchise’s original killer? Doesn’t she deserve the same treatment? Today, she gets it!

What many don’t remember about that oddball game is that Mrs. Voorhees was also in it, depicted as a floating 8-bit severed head. Pamela was a mini-boss that you had to beat off before getting to her vengeful son, and defeating her won you special weapons to better arm yourself for that big boss battle.

Courtesy of Jack’s Attic, the same website that brought us that aforementioned NES Jason mask, comes a FREE printable Mrs. Voorhees mask, based on her appearance in the infamous game. With frazzled 8-bit hair and a purple face of doom, Mrs. Voorhees has never looked more terrifying, and we can’t think of a more unique Halloween costume than this one.

Check out both masks below and remember – all you need is a printer and a piece of string!

Killer Mermaid (2014)

Thu, 09/18/2014 - 18:47

Starring Kristina Klebe, Franco Nero, Natalie Burn, Dragan Mićanović, Miodrag Krstović, Slobodan Stefanović, Sofija Rajović, Zorana Kostić Obradović

Directed by Milan Todorovic

Geez, just look at the number of names I’ve listed above that end in the suffix “vic.” You should see the rest of the credits.

Speaking of spelling, since American audiences need everything spelled out for them, it seems this new killer mermaid flick originally titled Nymph has been given the more simplistic, straight-to-the-point title Killer Mermaid. While not without its flaws, this Serbian sea monster movie deserves a better moniker than the dopey new Syfy-ish title would imply.

Two American women are on vacation in scenic Montenegro. Well, one American woman and an actress playing an American who clearly struggles at times to mask her natural Russian accent.

Just the lush Balkan locale alone adds an exotic flavor that elevates the production past most low-budget creature features these days. It’s not a location we typically see on screen, particularly in horror movies, so I’d definitely say it speaks volumes that even after watching people horribly killed by both madman and monster, it still looked like a place I’d love to visit.

Kelly is a workaholic magazine writer who has issues with the ocean stemming from a childhood tragedy. I’m thinking if you suffer from a touch of aquaphobia, vacationing in a seaside Mediterranean resort town is probably not your best bet.

Her BFF Lucy looks incredible in a bikini. That’s not just me being lecherous; that really is about all we ever get to know about her. That and she’s still not entirely over her college boyfriend, Serbian playboy Alex, with whom the two are reuniting in this aquatic paradise. Alex has brought with him the fiancée he’s not sure he’s ready to fully commit to so you better believe that leads to some romantic entanglements.

Another handsome stranger joins them as they consider taking a trip out to Mamula, a small island that’s home to an abandoned military prison. When has that not ever ended badly in a movie?

The great Franco Nero doesn’t get nearly enough screen time as a grizzled fisherman, kind of like Quint to the mermaid’s Jaws. He attempts to warn the vacationers that Mamula is a place of great evil they’d be wise to stay far away from. Naturally, they do not listen. If they had, the movie would have been a 30-minute postcard.

Once on Mamula, the solid set-up gets bogged down as the attractive ne’er-do-wells are stalked by a mad fisherman whose primary weapon of choice is a four-pronged boat anchor. Comparisons to I Know What You Did Last Summer were not lost on the writers, who even make a joke referencing that film. I’m tempted to summarize the movie as I Know What You Did Last Summer meets Splash if Daryl Hannah’s siren song turned Tom Hanks into a hook-wielding homicidal maniac.

Perhaps the title should have been changed to Killer/Mermaid or Killer & Mermaid since the mermaid herself is a tad underutilized. Her maniacal minion does most of the legwork, most likely because the mermaid has no legs. The clunky slasher aspect kills a lot of momentum with tunnel chases that go on far too long. I prefer more mermaid and less killer in my killer mermaid movies.

A major opportunity is missed as the siren’s mind-controlling call appeared to be on the verge of transforming Alex into another maniacal minion, only to never really follow through with it. Given the romantic insecurities the subplots are built around, having these men take turns falling under the spell of another woman and turning on their female counterparts could have added an extra layer of both subtext and suspense to all the running and chasing that makes up too much of the mid-section.

A few less-than-convincing CGI shots aside, the mermaid is portrayed by a beautiful half-naked actress who perfectly conveys the seductive side of this mythological predator before she reveals her true face that only an alligator could love. Again, underutilized, as she doesn’t even make a full appearance until nearly the halfway point, and it won’t be until the final 15 minutes that she actually starts getting her fins dirty.

A mix of Hammer-esque horror and slasher filmdom that transforms into a full-blown creature feature by the end, pacing and story issues aside, it is a notch above most modern low-budget monster movies that tend to also be low on ambition or resources. Killer Mermaid is a Gothic creature feature dripping with atmosphere, sex appeal, and blood. But a little more mermaid action and a lot more Franco Nero really would have helped it make a bigger splash.

Tie a Ribbon on this Summary of The Vampire Diaries Episode 6.02 – Yellow Ledbetter

Thu, 09/18/2014 - 16:38

Yet another song title has been appropriated by “The Vampire Diaries” for an upcoming episode, and as a huge fan of Pearl Jam, I’m really hoping they do justice to the band in the October 9th Episode 6.02, which is called “Yellow Ledbetter.” Here’s the ep’s synopsis, released by The CW today.

“The Vampire Diaries” Ep. 6.02 – “Yellow Ledbetter” (10/9/14)
Knowing she needs to come to terms with the loss of Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Elena (Nina Dobrev) turns to Alaric (Matt Davis) to help her move on with her life.

Enzo (Michael Malarkey) convinces Caroline (Candice Accola) to join him as he tracks down a lead to get Damon and Bonnie (Kat Graham) back, but Caroline is shocked when they make an unexpected detour and uncover what Stefan (Paul Wesley) has been up to. Meanwhile, Matt (Zach Roerig) worries about Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), who is spending time with Sarah (guest star Gabrielle Walsh), a mysterious girl who has recently arrived in Mystic Falls.

Elsewhere, Tripp (guest star Colin Ferguson), leader of the community protection program, makes an interesting confession to Matt about his connection to the town. Lastly, with the Other Side destroyed and gone for good, Damon and Bonnie reluctantly band together to uncover the mystery of where they are and how they are going to get back home. Pascal Verschooris directed the episode written by Julie Plec.

Dennis Haysbert Experiences Dead Rising

Thu, 09/18/2014 - 16:23

Well, he’s no Frank West, but we now have our first cast member for Legendary Digital and Crackle’s upcoming adaptation of the Capcom game Dead Rising. The Wrap is reporting that one of “24”‘s most memorable presidents, Dennis Haysbert, has signed on for some zombie slaying!

Sony’s Crackle will give the 90-minute feature, directed by Leprechaun: Origins‘ Zach Lipovsky, an exclusive digital release in the U.S. before the film receives a multi-platform release on SVOD, VOD, DVD, and TV.

Content Media Corp. (Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn) will distribute both feature-length and episodic formats on international platforms.

Dead Rising takes place during a large-scale zombie outbreak. When a mandatory government vaccine fails to stop the infection from spreading, the four leads must evade infection while also pursuing the root of the epidemic — with all signs pointing to a government conspiracy. Politics, public paranoia, and media coverage will all play a key role in the movie’s story.

The script was written by Tim Carter, who also produces the film alongside Tomas Harlan under their Contradiction Films banner (the same company that produced Mortal Kombat: Legacy). Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, G.I. Joe) is the executive producer.

Trailer and Poster for Eli Roth-Produced The Stranger

Wed, 09/17/2014 - 15:58

Playing as part of this year’s Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, is The Stranger, a new film produced by Eli Roth and Nicolás López (Aftershock). Directed by Guillermo Amoedo, the flick star Luis Gnecco, Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, and Aaron Burns.

Check out the first look below courtesy of Latino Review.

Synopsis
Guillermo Amoedo shows a deft ability to turn a bloodthirsty monster movie on its head into a slow-burn, character-driven film. THE STRANGER takes its time, building the tension through occasional flashbacks and having the audience sympathize with Peter, who grew up not knowing his father. Peter, like the audience, is kept largely in the dark about his father’s motives or even what he is… because he’s certainly not human. What is apparent is the chaos his dad’s return has on the small town, especially a member of the police force and his violence-prone son.

THE STRANGER is ultimately about family, the legacy we pass on to our children and the lengths we go to protect and ensure their survival, no matter how dark and deadly they might become.
