Regular readers know I’m a huge fan of Scott Derrickson, pictured below, even if Sinister wasn’t my favorite of his works. I quite enjoyed his modern day take on The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Exorcism of Emily Rose had its moments. While we have yet to see his latest genre offering, Deliver Us From Evil, he’s already being propelled into Marvel stardom by becoming the new director on Dr. Strange!
Variety explains that talks are still early, but sources say Derrickson is Marvel’s choice and a deal should be struck shortly.
The comicbook revolved around a former neurosurgeon who serves as the “Sorcerer Supreme” — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Strange made his first appearance in the 1963 comicbook series “Strange Tales” and would go on to have his own comicbook series and would appear in several other comicbooks that included “The Fantastic Four,” “Spider-Man” and “Nick Fury.”
The pic will be produced by Kevin Feige. Executive producers on the project are Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Stan Lee and Stephen Broussard.
THR gets all wet with the first trailer for director Steven C. Miller’s (Under The Bed, Aggression Scale) Submerged, which features Tim Daley, Mario Van Peebles, Jonathan Bennett and Rosa Salazar in a heap of trouble.
Penned by Mother’s Day‘s Scott Milam, “the film sees a limo ride home from a party turning into a terrifying ordeal for a group of college kids. A young woman and her friends have been targeted by a ring of vengeful kidnappers and must do everything they can to survive after their limo is forced off the road and plunged into a canal.”
Watch as a great night turns into a limo ride from hell…
Earlier this month McDonald’s unveiled “Happy”, their new mascot that looks like an psychotic Happy Meal box overeager (much like a car salesman) to sell you some food.
Critics everywhere have been slamming the new centerpiece for being too frightening for kids. Frankly, I think McDonald’s just got a bit cooler.
Whatever the case may be, there’s outrage, so Foodiggity took it upon themselves to insert “Happy” into various horror films where, well, he belongs.
We’ve been teasing this one over the past week, and we are stoked to finally reveal Michael Moreci’s new series from Image Comics, “Roche Limit”. Joining Moreci will be Vic Malhotra on art. Look for issue #1 in shops this September.
Nerdist reports, “A hardboiled sci-fi noir story, Roche Limit takes us to the edges of the cosmos to the eponymous colony of Roche Limit, a grueling, dangerous place that sits on the precipice of a mysterious energy source and teems with criminal activity. When a girl, Bekkah Hudson, goes missing though, it prompts a search that reveals some terrible truths about mankind and even more terrible dangers facing them.”
I’ve been a fan of Moreci since the first issue of “Hoax Hunters”, but he has since outdone himself time and time again. His last book, “Curse”, from BOOM! Studios is a werewolf masterpiece, that nobody should miss. Given his track record thus far, “Roche Limit” should already be on your pull list.
Talented up and coming filmmaker Ryan Spindell is working hard to get his indie anthology project off the ground, and has resorted to assembling a really awesome short documentary detailing years of horror anthologies.
“We Come In Pieces: The Rebirth of the Horror Anthology Film” is a documentary short that chronicles and celebrates the past, present, and future of horror anthology films.
According to the press release:
When filmmaker Ryan Spindell (“Kirksdale,” “The Root Of The Problem”) set out to make his horror anthology film The Mortuary Collection (Kickstarter here), producers rejected it outright. Time and time again, he was told that horror anthologies are dead at the studio level, but the question no one seemed to be able to answer was, why?
To find out Spindell teamed up with documentary filmmaker Ben Hethcoat (Dead Dad, D.I.Y) and together they sat down with legendary moviemakers Joe Dante (Gremlins, Twilight Zone: The Movie), Michael Dougherty (Trick R Treat), Darin Scott (Tales From The Hood), Larry Fessenden (We Sell The Dead) and a handful of genre experts to discuss the horror anthologies they love, the current state of the format, and the future of the horror anthology film. In the course of making the documentary, Spindell and Hethcoat discovered that despite the studios reluctance to get behind the horror anthology format, the fans of the long-dormant subgenre are as fervent as ever. With renewed enthusiasm the filmmakers have set out to connect directly with those fans by launching a Kickstarter Campaign to finance The Mortuary Collection independently.
Being that I produced the three V/H/S films, I think I have a pretty good answer to his question, but it’s not something I can just spew out in one sitting. There are so many factors that get in the way of a studio getting behind a horror anthology – the main one being fear.
Whatever the case may be, this is a fun, well put together indie doc that any horror fan would enjoy. And frankly, Spindell is a good filmmaker who I’d like to see behind the camera some more. Go support his campaign and keep the horror anthology alive.

After screening in Cannes as part of Critics Week, David Robert Mitchell's It Follows has just been scooped up for distribution here in the states. Read on for all the details!
Deadline reports that Radius-TWC picked up the U.S. rights to the flick, with a planned release in the first quarter of 2015.
The film centers on a teenager (Maika Monroe) who finds herself plagued by disturbing visions and the inescapable sense that something is following her after she has a strange sexual encounter.
The film also stars Keir Gilchrist ("The United States of Tara"), Daniel Zovatto (Laggies), Jake Weary ("Chicago Fire"), Olivia Luccardi ("Orange Is the New Black"), and Lili Sepe (Spork).
Mitchell, who wrote and directed 2010′s The Myth Of The American Sleepover, produced with Rebecca Green, Laura D. Smith, David Kaplan and Erik Rommesmo.
For 19-year-old Jay (Maika Monroe, AT ANY PRICE), the fall should be about school, boys, and weekends at the lake. Yet, after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she suddenly finds herself plagued by nightmarish visions; she can't shake the sensation that someone, or something, is following her. As the threat closes in, Jay and her friends must somehow escape the horrors that are only a few steps behind.
One of the greatest and arguably shocking moments in film history was the infamous unboxing scene from David Fincher's Seven. As jaded as I am that shit stayed with me for long after I first saw it. With unboxing videos being an internet craze it was only a matter of time before someone parodied it!
The good folks over at NonRandomNonSense have done just that and it's a winner. Check out the video below.
For those of you living under a rock, Seven followed two cops (Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman) who track a brilliant and elusive killer who orchestrates a string of horrific murders, each kill targeting a practitioner of one of the Seven Deadly Sins - Gluttony. Greed. Sloth. Wrath. Pride. Lust. Envy. Gwyneth Paltrow also stars in this acclaimed thriller set in a dour, drizzly city sick with pain and blight. David Fincher (Fight Club, Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) guides the action - physical, mental and spiritual - with a sure understanding of what terrifies us, right up to a stunning denouement that will rip the scar tissue off the most hardened soul.
We’re back with more Rock On The Range 2014 coverage! Today, for our first video interview from the festival we bring you Johannes Eckerström, vocalist for Swedish avant garde metal band Avatar, who just recently released their latest album Hail The Apocalypse! I’m a huge fan of these guys, so it was a real pleasure getting the chance to sit down with Eckerström to talk about the band, the importance of music videos, maintaining creative control, and, of course, horror! Check out this exclusive video below!

We've been telling you about writer/director Staci Layne Wilson's feature debut, Fetish Factory, for a few weeks now; and today we're happy to share the film's teaser trailer. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a peek at this pinup models versus zombies extravaganza!
Fetish Factory stars Chase Williamson, Carrie Keagan, Jennifer Blanc-Biehn, Diane Ayala Goldner, Tristan Risk, Emma Julia Jacobs, Jesse Merlin, Ruben Pla, Benjamin Easterday, Tom Ayers, Stephen Wastell, and Morgan Peter Brown.
Montreal-based alternative model and fetish superstar The Richard and go-go icon Jenimay Walker round out the cast. Lony Ruhmann is executive producer, cinematography is by Steve Romano, and the original Fetish Factory score is by Mars Homeworld with new original songs by guitar superstars The Ventures.
“This trailer blew my mind,” says Risk. “There’s nothing like that old time rot and roll! These kittens show their claws when it comes down to Z-day... but they will have you coming back to life for more.” Not to be outshone by the ladies, there’s also the gentlemen. “I don't know why all the gents are so grave. Looks like their corpses might not be the only thing stiff once they shamble into the Fetish Factory… but the pin-ups won't be pinned down. When the movie comes out, you’ll see what really goes bump ’n grind in the night.”
“Making Fetish Factory was more fun than I could have ever imagined,” says co-star/producer Blanc-Biehn. Ruhmann adds, “I am extremely delighted by the trailer. Staci and her cast filled the film with humor, fun, and engaging visuals.”
It’s “SURVIVAL OF THE FOXIEST!” in Fetish Factory, a thrilling and darkly comic horror suspense film with a heaping helping of vintage burlesque bawdiness.
Imagine a wickedly saucy by invitation-only stage show and posh private peeps in which your every fantasy can come true, fulfilled by the likes of luscious ladies imitating the sex goddesses of yore: Bettie Page, Jayne Mansfield, and Suzie Wong. Along with classic burlesque strip-teases and curio acts – a ventriloquist, a magician, and a whip-dancer – you are in for the night of your life at the Fetish Factory. That is, until your life is at stake when the apocalypse strikes! Once mild-mannered men become bloodthirsty zombies, and it’s up to the girls to defend themselves by any means – even if that means turning their bullet bras, garter belts, and spike-heels into deadly weapons.
The trailer comes courtesy of STYD. Look for lots more soon!

Another new 30-second trailer for the TV adaptation of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan's "The Strain" has arrived, and it counts down the horrors to come while we sit and count the days until it gets here.
The ensemble cast of "The Strain" includes Corey Stoll, Mia Maestro, Sean Astin, Kevin Durand, Natalie Brown, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Robert Maillet, Jack Kesy, Ben Hyland, Miguel Gomez, and David Bradley.
"The Strain" is a high concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers wage war for the fate of humanity itself.
The highly anticipated first season of “The Strain” will premiere on July 13th at 10 p.m. and will include 13 episodes.
I recently wrote an article about the 90s coming back to comics, which a lot of readers did not agree with. Well, in Marvel’s latest press release, they make the claim themselves. Take your first look below at the upcoming “Deadpool Vs X-Force” series, which is set for release on July 2, 2014.
From the press release:
New Limited Series Set to Return the Merc With a Mouth to His 90s Roots!
This July, big guns, big pouches, and big action all return as your favorite mercenary goes toe-to-toe with that band of militant mutants in DEADPOOL VS. X-FORCE #1 – the first issue in a bombastic new limited series from writer Duane Swierczynski and artist Pepe Larraz! Journey back to the long-forgotten days of the 1990s, when two characters made their thunderous debut and would go on to change the face of Marvel Comics forever.
That’s right – we’re talking about Cable & Deadpool! In this all-new tale, experience the duo’s very first meeting, well before their first comic book appearance together in New Mutants #98, as Cable and his soon to be X-Force race through the timestream to stop a reckless mercenary (that’s Deadpool!) before he destroys American history for good!
“Deadpool’s gone back to key points in American military history: the Battle of Germantown during the Revolutionary War; Gettysburg during the Civil War, and then… well, I can’t say anything else, because you know how one little musket ball has a funny of changing the course of human events,” says series writer Duane Swierczynski.
Join Cable and his band of mutants as they hunt Deadpool through the annals of American History before he can alter the space-time continuum as we know it! Can they stop him in time? What's this? We're talking about Halloween already?!? Man, this year is flying Universal Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights is turning to you, the fans to help them shape what will be the biggest scare-filled event of the year!
From the Press Release
For the first time in the history of “Halloween Horror Nights” at Universal Studios Hollywood, fans of the award-winning horror event will seal their own fate as they are called upon to vote for the most fear-provoking Scare Zone in the “Choose Your Scare” online voting competition. The winning Scare Zone concept will materialize in disturbingly real detail at Universal Studios Hollywood’s “Halloween Horror Nights” in Fall 2014.
“From June 4 to 18, 2014, “Halloween Horror Nights” fans will be invited to cast their vote via the Halloween Horror Night’s Official Facebook Page to select one of three possible Scare Zone themes: Corps, Mask-a-Raid or Ghoulz. The winning Scare Zone, which will be located on French Street, will be announced on June 19.
“For years, ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ fans have shared their thoughts on what they would like to see at the event. This year, we’re giving them a chance to participate in the creative process by voting for what they believe will be the scariest Scare Zone,” said John Murdy, Creative Director, Universal Studios Hollywood and Executive Producer of “Halloween Horror Nights.” “Our goal is to produce the most terrifying, most intense horror experience anywhere. The more scared the fans are, the louder they scream and the happier they are, so, to have them join us in this process is very rewarding.”
Fans can recruit friends to help amp up the vote count for a favorite Scare Zone choice by “sharing” their vote via their social media platforms using #UniversalHHN.
Fans can vote for one of the following three Scare Zone concepts:
Scare Zone, Option 1: Corps
“The War to End All Wars” has left a swathe of destruction through battle-torn France, and on French Street at Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights, World War I-era soldiers have returned from the dead. The constant artillery bombardment has turned the twisted network of trenches into a sprawling graveyard, and now “The Lost Generation” is rising from their muddy graves and coming home to haunt the streets of “old Paris.”
Scare Zone, Option 2: Mask-a-Raid
Masquerade Balls were a staple of the social calendar in pre-Revolutionary War France; a time for the members of the French aristocracy to misbehave behind the cover of elaborate, jeweled masks. But “mask-a-raiding” among the powdered and perfumed party-goers are members of a blood thirsty cannibal cult. Bon appétit!
Scare Zone, Option 3: Ghoulz
In 19th century France, restrictive laws and social norms prevented medical colleges from acquiring the one asset they need most – human cadavers. To solve this “body shortage crisis,” universities employed “unsavory characters” to do their dirty work and steal corpses from cemeteries in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, the grave robbers on Universal Studios Hollywood’s French Street have developed a morbid fascination with the dead – and a taste for human flesh.
“Halloween Horror Nights” 2014 at Universal Studios Hollywood will bring together the sickest minds in horror to immerse guests in a living, breathing, three-dimensional world of terror. “Halloween Horror Nights” will feature a slate of unrivaled film production quality mazes, terror-filled Scare Zones and “Terror Tram” experience uniquely themed to today’s most definitive horror properties.
Universal Studios Hollywood, The Entertainment Capital of L.A., includes a full-day, movie-based theme park and Studio Tour; the CityWalk entertainment, shopping and dining complex, the Universal CityWalk Cinemas and the “5 Towers” state-of-the-art outdoor concert venue. World-class rides and attractions include the all new 3D Ultra-HD movie motion-simulator adventure, “Despicable Me Minion Mayhem” and “Super Silly Fun Land,” the intense, award-winning ride, “King Kong 360 3D” on the famed behind-the-scenes Studio Tour, the critically-acclaimed mega-attraction, “Transformers™: The Ride-3D,” “The Simpsons RideTM,” “Revenge of the MummySM—The Ride,” and “Jurassic Park® —The Ride.”
More info on “Halloween Horror Nights” is available at Halloween Horror Nights.com. Updates from Creative Director John Murdy can be found on Twitter, as he reveals a running chronicle of exclusive information.
We've never watched a single episode of "Comic Book Men" so the prospect of its stars being in a horror flick isn't exactly a selling point for us. That being said a flick that "pays homage to the grainy and gory genre flicks of the VHS era?" Yep, that we're sold on!
From the Press Release
Blood Flood Productions is proud to announce its inaugural feature, Burn in Hell. The independent horror-comedy features AMC’s “Comic Book Men” stars Ming Chen, Michael Zapcic, and Robert Bruce. Burn in Hell marks the debut of 17-year-old writer/director Joshua Bruce. “As my first full-fledged feature, I couldn’t be more ecstatic,” he raves. “I never expected it to grow so rapidly as it has. The actors and crew have been the best part of working on it, and I couldn’t have pulled it off without them.”
In addition to the aforementioned Chen, Zapcic, and Bruce, the cast is rounded out by Kenny Geiger, Joshua Bruce, Ken Brotis, Nick Petito, Johnny Dickie, and Chris Guttadaro as Beelzebub.
The low-budget film pays homage to the grainy and gory genre flicks of the VHS era. In it a high school jock enlists the help of a pot-smoking metalhead and a deranged, one-eyed priest to hunt down a flesh-eating demon and send it back to hell.
Burn in Hell is currently nearing the end of principal photography and is expected to be released on DVD and VHS later this year. To keep up-to-date with the production, like Burn in Hell on Facebook.
In a small town, gruesome killings have been plaguing the townspeople. Bodies are found torn apart and eaten. The authorities have no leads. After the death of his best friend, a young high school football player, Brad, seeks out the help of local priest Father Damian, who is slaughtered by the killer before disclosing any information of the killings. The killer, revealed as the demon Beelzebub, sets out on a vicious killing spree to consume a steady supply of human blood in order to maintain a physical form. Brad recruits metal-head/stoner kid D.O. to assist him in his hunt for Beelzebub. Guided by the deranged, one-eyed demon hunting priest Father Lewis, the trio set out to rid their town of the demon and end its hellish conquest.
Texas alt-metal band Nothing More recently paid a visit to the 106.7 KBPI studio in Denver to perform a fantastic acoustic cover of their current single “This Is The Time”. It’s a fantastically lush cover that includes heavy use of vocal effects, pads, synths, harmonies, and a whole lot more.
I’m really excited for the upcoming self-titled album release from this band and I highly recommend you check them out. Very exciting stuff!
We challenge you to watch this video without laughing out loud. Thus far we have not found a person who could do it. "The Wil Wheaton Project" (Syfy, Tuesdays at 10p.m.) recently aired a hilarious mock theme song for "The Walking Dead" in an upbeat, 80's sitcom style. Check this out!
In the clip below, Wheaton and "The Talking Dead" host Chris Hardwick introduce the theme song during the premiere episode of "The Wil Wheaton Project" this past week. Enjoy this walk down memory lane with some great scenes from the show, and be sure to listen to the lyrics. For fans of "The Walking Dead" this is comedy gold!
Synopsis from "The Wil Wheaton Project"
"In the 80s, nearly every show had an iconic theme song that told you everything you needed to know about the show. We at 'The Wil Wheaton Project' thought that 'The Walking Dead' needed to have one, so we made it."
