| It was the best of times (if you weren't a horror fan), it was the worst of times (if you were). In 2006 we heard of projects in the works (Grindhouse, Hostel 2, Argento's Third Mother film), projects on the outs (House of Re-Animator, The Hobbit ) and projects that probably shouldn't exist at all ( the Halloween re-make). It was a remarkably crowded year for horror films, but quantity does not beget quality, and many of us found our best horror fix in The Descent - a nearly two-year-old British import that finally graced American theaters this past August. It certainly wasn't an easy year to pick the Best of anything, but, goshdarnit, we tried...we really, really tried. |

BEST MOVIE (HORROR): "HOSTEL" Yeah, Okay, so this was technically a 2005 release; but there's not that much going on in horror this year, and this should really be the last word in the weirdly popular "torture" sub-genre that's been all the rage for the last few years since "SAW" ... although it probably wont be!
BIGGEST SURPRISE: "SLITHER" - A perfect combination of outlandish comedy and squirm-inducing horror; combines zombie horror and Cronenbergian body horror with great aplomb.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT: MASTERS OF HORROR
MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2007: Argento's "THE THIRD MOTHER", Del Toro's "PAN'S LABYRINTH": Tarantino and Rodriguez's "GRINDHOUSE" and David Lynch's "INLAND EMPIRE"
BEST DVD RELEASE: KWAIDAN The UK Masters of Cinema release not only features twenty minutes of footage not included in the previous Criterion Edition and a gorgeous anamorphic transfer, but also a free book of the ghost stories which formed the basis of the film.
BEST TV SHOW: "LOST"Still the most addictive and creative show on TV. |

BEST MOVIE /(HORROR) - "La Sheitan"- Crazy French horror/comedy with Vincent Cassel. As bizarre as anything I've ever seen. I mean, we're talking Miike crazy, folks.
BEST MOVIE /(GENERAL) - "The Departed" - Scorcese's best film since "Goodfellas". Yeah, it's a remake, but it's a remake done with the undeniable flair of a master.
BEST DIRECTOR -Martin Scorcese - "The Departed"
WORST MOVIE - Can I still say "The Fog" even if it came out in 2005 here? The hatred for that film still lingers...
BIGGEST SURPRISE -"Dexter" - Showtime's serial killer drama is one of the best things on television. If you don't have cable, invest in the DVD set!! You won't be dissapointed.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT - "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning ", Masters of Horror
BEST TV - "Dexter" "Heroes", "Prison Break", "The Office", and "Lost"...man, I watch a lot of TV.
