Brass Eye
(Region 2)
(1997-2001)
review by Head Cheeze
Chris
Morris is one of the funniest, wittiest, and
most sublimely intelligent human beings on
the planet. Whether posing as a drug addict
searching for "Clarkey Cap" or conducting
mock interviews with British celebs that leave
them looking like complete imbeciles, the
man is a virtual font of high brow/high concept
humor and a linguistic acrobat.
Brass
Eye, a controversial "news" show,
is Morris' brainchild. Each episode focuses
on a single topic, from a fictional drug called
"Cake" to animal rights and paedophelia.
Morris uses his Channel 4 status to lure celebrities
into his fake interview program sets and ask
them the "tough" questions about
the issues, oftentimes getting these gullible
folks to read phony public service announcements
(the best of which involve Phil Collins wearing
a "Nunce-Sense" t-shirt in an attempt
to help raise awareness about rampant paedophelia
in Britain!). Each of the six episodes presented
here are nothing short of hysterical as Morris
crosses the boundaries of good taste again
and again with side-splittingly disturbing
results.
Presented
on region 2 DVD, this set compiles the 1997
series and the 2001 special Paedophiles which
was the last nail in Morris' Channel 4 coffin.
It's fucking brilliant but at the same time
unsettling. Here's a sample bit of dialogue
that narrates a man dressed as a Rabbi having
sex with a naked woman dressed in childrens
clothes.:
Announcer:
This man is a paedophile having sex with a
10 year old girl. In this case, this is a
reconstruction so she has been replaced by
a 23 year old woman. Look at those supple
breasts, that wanting mouth. This 10 year
old is a whore!
Believe
me, it's funnier than that, but that gives
you a rough idea!
The
DVD contains a pretty good amount of extra
material, but all of it is VERY short or just
plain ridiculous (the commentary on the Drugs
episode is basically two ACTUAL bums off the
street talking about nothing in particular),
but at over 197 minutes and just under 18
quid you have no excuse NOT to own this insanely
funny set!
