DEAD BODY MAN is the latest effort from independent veteran Ryan Cavalline and his team at 4th Floor Pictures. If you surf the net at all looking for horror sites (which I imagine you do, or why else are you here?) or if you frequent any boards that concern horror movies then the name Ryan Cavalline probably sounds familiar to you. This guy is everywhere pimping his projects. I admire that a lot.
Nobody could ever accuse the fine folks at 4th Floor Pictures of skimming on the blood. From the opening scene to the closing credits the viewer is smacked in the face with an onslaught of the red stuff. The effects were basically just piles of guts pulled from off camera and thrown across the screen. But that is not to say that the effects were not good or enjoyable. They were indeed both well made and fun to watch.
As far as the acting goes Eddie Benevich plays the main lead of Willie and does a pretty darn good job. He plays Willie very over the top which suits the entire theme of the movie quite well. The rest of the cast did an okay job as well.
The real charm of this movie is the dark and sometimes “in yer face” humor. The whole voice of God thing was done tongue in cheek. God goes from a bright light in his closet, to a porn star on Willie’s television, to a pizza box! One scene shows Willie on his couch trying to enjoy a fine evening of porn. Shots of the television show an extremely HOT blonde riding an sucking off a man on the bed. The blonde turns around to face the lens and announces that she is indeed God! She insists that if Willie wants to continue to watch her...ummmmm...Him screw the be”jesus” out of the guy then Willie needs to kill again. I laughed until I nearly pee’d myself during this scene!
DEAD BODY MAN has quite a few problems though. The major part of the problems were on the technical side of the process. There were a couple of scenes where Willie attends a Serial Killers Anonymous meeting. The audio was so bad that I could not understand ANY OF IT! Unfortunately I had to fast forward through those scenes. Which is too bad because it looked rather amusing. Generally the audio suffered trough the entire movie. Also, the editing was real rough. Scenes went on too long and even some shots could (and need to) be trimmed some frames. The movie runs 100 minutes and with a re-edit it could be an enjoyable 85-90 minute feature.
In addition to the technical problems Cavalline chose to have digital gun flashes placed in the movie when Willie shoots his victims. The flashes exit the gun barrel and look wicked ridiculous! Also, there were about 500 too many references to other movies and serial killers. It became annoying. Willie wears a “Freddy” sweater throughout the movie. The meeting for serial killers that Willie attends is called the “Gein Society”. A girl asks Willie where Elm Street is located. A pizza guy stumbles upon Willie’s house accidently and asks Willie if his address was 123 Bundy Lane. These go on and on. The did grow tiresome.
In think that if DEAD BODY MAN was cleaned up technically, re-edited and some things re-shot then it would have all the ingredients of a CULT CLASSIC. The bottom line is that Cavalline, although technically flawed, can entertain!
