42nd Street Forever Volume 3:
Exploitation Explosion
(Synapse Region 0 NTSC DVD)
(2008)
review by Suicide Blonde

Once again, the fine folks at Synapse have provided a bounty of trashy movie trailers. 42nd Street Forever Volume 3: Exploitation Explosion will satisfy the needs of anyone who remembers the bygone days of crap cinema, or anyone whose taste was whetted by the faux trailers in Grindhouse.

Like its predecessors, Volume 3 groups the trailers into loose categories. There is martial arts action, demonic horror, nature-bites-back, seventies sexploitation, lowbrow comedies, tabloid cinema, Charles Bronson, and more. The complete list of titles is:

Sudden Death
The One-Armed Executioner
Jaguar Lives!
Enter the Ninja
Lightning Swords of Death
Five Fingers of Death
The Stranger & The Gunfighter
Beyond the Door
Demonoid
The Night Child
Devil Times Five
Patrick
Jennifer
Bug
Phase IV
The Uncanny
Alligator
Killer Fish
Shark's Treasure
Blood Beach
Hot T-Shirts
Cheerleaders' Wild Weekend
Summer School Teachers
Gorp
King Frat
Prison Girls
1000 Convicts and a Woman
Chain Gang Women
The Penthouse
The House By The Lake
Night Call Nurses
The Young Nurses
Candy Stripe Nurses
The Life and Times of Xaviera Hollander The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood
Survive
Guyana: Cult of the Damned
Seven
Scorchy
Savage Streets
Convoy
High Ballin'
Telefon
From Noon Till Three
Lies
Tattoo

In addition to the usual sights of exploitation cinema, you'll get to see Connie Stevens as a thoroughly unconvincing gunwoman (Scorchy), Charles Bronson in a romantic comedy (From Noon 'Till Three), Leif Garrett as a homicidal kid (Devil Times Five), and Joseph Cotton collecting a paycheck (Guyana: Cult of the Damned).

It's a thoroughly fascinating timepiece, although I'm very frustrated to find almost none of these movies are on DVD. (Won't you join my petition to get Jennifer a DVD release? I saw it when I was a kid and thought it kicked ass!)

What makes Volume 3 special is that finally, there are extras! Chief among them is a fun commentary by Edwin Samuelson of AV Maniacs, Fangoria Managing Editor Mike Gingold and Film Historian Chris Poggiali. They provide all sorts of information about the films and have an uncanny knowledge of even the most obscure titles. Add some TV spots and you have a full evening's entertainment.
