Hercules-The Legendary Journeys
Season Five Boxed Set

review by Head Cheeze

The fourth season of Hercules-The Legendary Adventures was an absolute hoot, featuring some of the show's funniest and most inspired moments that showed off the series' creative pedigree (Raimi, Tapert, Campbell...), as well as exercising the comedic acting chops of star, Kevin Sorbo. However, season four was more a series stand alone episodes (something I like!) as opposed to a traditionally linear storyline, and, apparently, that rubbed some fans the wrong way.

So, with season five, Hercules returned to the "epic" story arc formula that includes Hercules' adventures into the world of the Celts, and his alliance with them in the face of a Roman attack. Along the way, Hercules encounters some of his old enemies, and makes several new ones (in the guise of Norse gods).

There are also a few episodes independent of the main story, including a few silly diversions, such as "Greece is Burning", which sees Hercules helping an old friend with a fashion show, as well as the clever parody "For Those of You Just Joining Us...", in which actors portraying the show's writers gather together to discuss where the show has been, and where it is going. Think of it as one of those "clips" episodes, but with a much cooler narrative. It's also a great way to get caught up with stuff you may have missed!

As with all of the previous boxed sets, Anchor Bay releases Hercules-The Legendary Journeys Season Five with loads of special features that will be sure to warm the cockles of Herc fanatics' hearts, including several episode commentaries, interviews with cast and crew, featurettes and much, much more.

While, in my opinion, not as strong or satisfying as season four, this boxed set does feature some solid episodes, with a few being amongst the series' best (the excellent "Once and Future King" is brilliant!), and well worth the purchase for Hercules fans!
