I Spit on Your Corpse,
I Piss on Your Grave
 (2002)
review by Head Cheeze

The "shot on digital video" horror film is becoming an abundant breed of late, and, considering the format's ease of use, budget sensibility and quick turnaround to final product, it comes as no surprise that many an underground studio has begun churning out direct to home market cheapies. Sub Rosa is just such a studio, but they also have the attitude to back up their underground methods, and it's quite apparent in this new release, I Spit on Your Corpse, I Piss on Your Grave.

Director Eric Stanze, who also helmed the notorious underground humiliation, rape, and revenge flick Scrapbook, reunites with that films leading lady Emily Hack and creates a very tense and dramatic film about a young woman named Sandy (Hack) who is kidnapped by her escaped prisoner boyfriend (Stanze) .He has also kidnapped three men who he blames for sending him to jail, Sandy's boss, her ex-boyfriend, and a complaining neighbor. After she kills her boyfriend while trying to escape, Sandy loses her mind and begins to torture and humiliate the three men using the most extreme methods one can imagine.

I Spit... is somewhat of an unofficial sequel to the classic "I Spit on Your Grave", with Sandy mentioning her "mother" being assaulted by 4 men and then hunting them down and killing them, and likening this to her situation, in that she has somehow inherited her mother's rage. It's a novel concept, but one that is only mentioned in passing and still doesn't adequately explain Sandy's sudden fit of madness. None of the characters she tortures has done anything remotely deserving of any sort of punishment (Her Boss was a nag, her neighbor complained about beer bottles being thrown in his yard, and her ex-beau, well, he did nothing!), so Sandy's madness is just a plot device for some well done gore and torture effects.

Stanze's direction is solid and the film, while micro-budget, looks pretty damned good! The lighting, unique camera movements and angles , sped up "film" and other touches really help to raise this one well above the S.O.V. standard.

Sub Rosa has also thrown in a generous amount of extras, including a commentary with Hack and Stanze, a behind the scenes doc which is more of an interview piece, but very interesting nonetheless, and a great short called "The Dumpster Incident" that you just have to see to believe.

All in all, I Spit... is a solid S.O.V. flick. The story doesn't make too much sense, but the acting is better than average, the FX are great, and it has a polished look that defies it's zero-budget origins.
