Zombie Holocaust (Region 2)
(aka: Dr. Butcher MD, Queen of the Cannibals & Island of the Last Zombies)
(1979)
review by Krug Stillo
The
gore-level on display in Zombie
Holocaust is higher than in Fulcis
Zombie, unfortunately the film
is less engaging, less impressive
but dont
let that indicate that Zombie
Holocaust isnt great entertainment.
The
brazen nerve to steal actual footage
from Lucios film is more
alluring than
repugnant and the insanely ludicrous
dialogue is more amusing than
confusing.
Where
else would one find a film combing
cannibals with weird rituals,
a mad
egomaniac scientist and a bunch
of strange-looking zombies? From
this
amalgam of popular monsters of
the period, you might believe
this isnt the
film for you, but if you love
the gore (and theres quite
a lot of it!)
movies from the early eighties,
this belongs on your DVD shelf.
Drafting
in Ian McCulloch from Fulcis
classic (you can spot him as a
younger man opposite the great
actor, Peter Cushing in The Ghoul),
Zombie
Holocaust also stars that directors
New York Ripper star, Alexandra
delli
Colli, removing her clothes at
every given chance. Both become
part of an
expedition of four and travel
to the mysterious island of Kito.
And its
there all Hell breaks loose.
The
gore highlights are patently the
star of the show, including
a) a heart and hand removal
b) a fellow has his throat slashed
after being impaled upon bamboo
shoots
c) another chap has his eyes gouged
out
d) a zombie has his face ripped
apart by a boat-propeller. ..etc.
Ill finish with two great
lines from the aforementioned
scientist -
"I could easily kill you now, but Im determined to have your brain!"
"The patients scream is disturbing me. Performing removal of vocal cords."
