Netflix Sent Me a Tongue In the Mail For “Hemlock Grove”…

bloody disgusting - Tue, 07/08/2014 - 18:37

Netflix is promoting their Emmy-nominated original series, “Hemlock Grove,” (read our special report from set), premiering on Friday, July 11th at 12:01 AM PT, by sending press a tongue in the mail, accompanied by a clip from Dr. Pryce.

Consider it a preview, a promise of more to come, a gift,” he exclaims. The video is part of a viral tying into the Godfrey Institute, a place that turns dreams into progress.

We’ve shared the clip and image below, along with a Season 2 featurette and a look back at Season 1!

The drama series was the first foray into television by internationally acclaimed horror master Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever). Roth says Netflix supported them taking the series in a “dangerous direction” stating that “they encouraged us to go even further – into a scarier, darker, and sexier place,” he explained. “We guarantee you won’t see anything like this anywhere else on television.

“Hemlock Grove” is a supernatural thriller which explores the strange happenings in a small Pennsylvania town. The show focuses on the unlikely friendship between the founding family’s young heir, Roman Godfrey (Skarsgård), and gypsy newcomer and outsider, Peter Rumancek (Liboiron). Each holds a monstrous secret that has been unleashed.

Season two continues with the town coming to grips with the shocking massacre incurred by one of its deadliest creatures. Roman and Peter are now faced with new responsibilities and the realities that come with adulthood. Roman’s relationship with his mother, Olivia, is all but dead as he struggles with his unwanted Upir birthright and the disappearance of his sister, Shelley. Peter moves in with Destiny and is forced to get a job after his mother is sent away. Meanwhile, in search of a new life, newcomer Miranda Cates, embarks on Hemlock Grove with an unknowingly profound effect on Peter and Roman. And Norman, still reeling from the loss of his family, must face the harsh truths that are uncovered about those he still loves. The White Tower looms menacingly over the town as Pryce’s mysterious experiments are questioned and he will be faced with the hardest decision of his career.

Based on Brian McGreevy’s novel of the same name, who is returning? All ten episodes of the one-hour series stars Famke Janssen (X-Men), Bill Skarsgård (“Simon & The Oaks”), Landon Liboiron (“Terra Nova”) and Dougray Scott (Mission Impossible II). The series also stars Madeline Brewer (“Orange is the New Black”), Madeleine Martin (“Californication”), Joel de la Fuente (“Law & Order: SVU”) and Tiio Horn (“18 to Life”).

There’s No Escaping This ‘Escape Dead Island’ Box Art

bloody disgusting - Tue, 07/08/2014 - 18:30

Deep Silver has three Dead Island games in the works right now, and they’re all radically different takes on the popular series. We have Dead Island: Epidemic, a free-to-play ZOMBA (Zombie Online Multiplayer Battle Arena), Dead Island 2, from Spec Ops: The Line developer Yager, and a third game called Escape Dead Island, which was only revealed last week.

Escape Dead Island aims to set itself apart from the other games with its “survival mystery” themes and a nifty cel-shaded art style. It follows Cliff Calo, the son of a wealthy businessman who decides to make a trip to the island of Narapela in an effort to discover the origins of the epidemic.

This box art was revealed around the same time as the game, but I somehow managed to miss it. Because I love each and every one of you, I’m remedying that by sharing it with you today!

[TV] David Slade To Direct “Powers” for Sony

bloody disgusting - Tue, 07/08/2014 - 14:55

Deadline Hollywood just broke the news that David Slade (30 Days of Night, Hannibal) has signed to direct the first two episodes of Sony’s “Powers” live action series. This is fantastic news as anyone who’s recently watched his work on Hannibal knows that Slade is capable of the dark and brooding tone that this pilot calls for. The gritty realism mixed with superhero elements is what made “Powers” such a hit in the first place and Slade is the perfect choice to usher in the first few episodes.

I expect some casting announcements will hit shortly. In the meantime, head to Deadline Hollywood for the original story.

#SDCC14: Todd McFarlane Talks The Walking Dead Construction Line; New Images; Spawn Update!

Dread Central - Tue, 07/08/2014 - 14:45

With SDCC 2014 bearing down on us, Todd McFarlane took some time out from preparing for the big event to answer our geekiest questions and give a teaser of a new line we'll be seeing on the show floor.

McFarlane Toys will always be known for bringing horror back to the world of action figures with its now legendary Movie Maniacs line and has further cemented its place in toy history with an excellent run of "The Walking Dead" action figures.

We started out with a question that's been eating away at us for a good long time. When you establish a line of incredibly popular 7-inch horror figures, why switch over to a 5-inch world of zombies? Todd explained that not everything is always an artistic choice. Sometimes things simply come down to what a retailer asks for... be that price, style, or, in this case, scale. Retailers expressed that all the other companies were reducing the size of their figures and that they'd like McFarlane to follow suit. “When the people who are buying tell you what they want to buy, you usually accommodate them or risk becoming a dinosaur. You won't survive very long,” Todd explained.

We'd been given a sneak preview of McFarlane's new "The Walking Dead" Construction line previous to this interview; think one part LEGO-like brick building and one part snap-kit innovation. The result is a build-it-yourself environment any minifigure would be terrified to enter.

We asked Todd how this line came to be, and his answer was very simple. “I walked down the toy aisles 20 years ago and wondered why the figures couldn't look better. Cooler. So I started my own company because the answer was figures COULD look better and cooler. Now that question is being applied to the brick aisles. 'Why does the final version of these builds have to look clunky?' I guess maybe it appeals to 6-year-olds or moms, but if you're trying to sell something to a 25-year-old and you make it look not realistic - when you CAN, but you choose not to - it seems like you're shortchanging the consumer. I looked at that aisle and said, 'I am going to make it as realistic and detailed as possible and carve out my own little niche there.'”

We asked how McFarlane will reach a collector fanbase that's been tempted by the lure of LEGO mini-figures for years now, and his answer, bluntly, was, “I'm not!” He went on to explain that he's after the 28 million fans who watch "The Walking Dead" every week (when it is on the air), which is a way higher number than the “collector” base everyone is always talking about. “My job is to go to those 28 million people and say, 'What is it that you like?' and then make the product look just like what they see on TV. Why the other companies do what they do... you can take that up with them, but I'm going to add realism to an aisle that has very little of it.”

And now...DETAILS!! Series One will have single-pack, blind-bagged (approximately 2-inch) figures with articulation, a five-pack of figures with both humans and zombies (low difficulty of build for all figures), Daryl Dixon on his chopper (around 150-160 pieces) riding down the highway with a zombie in the grass beyond the guard rail, The Governor's Room (just under 300 pieces) where he sits and watches the fish tanks with those floating, decapitated heads (the fish tanks light up!) and a cage door with little Penny lurking behind it, and finally, the deluxe box will contain one of the prison towers as well as around 18 inches to 2 feet of “gnarly,” dirtied-up fencing with customizable grass and Glenn with a dead zombie lying on the ground. If you snap up those blind-bagged figures and five-pack, you should be able to reenact one of those pivotal prison conflicts that have kept us on the edge of our seats.

Knowing McFarlane's business model fairly well, we had to ask if they were thinking of expanding this new construction model to their other licences. Todd answered with a resounding "YES! What I think is missing in that industry that appeals to adults, hopefully I can touch on it and then go after more licenses that make sense.”

We couldn't let a Todd McFarlane interview go by without asking about the return of Spawn to the big screen and, inevitably, the toy pegs. Todd has answered this question many times, and in this case his response was pretty much in the tone of “nothing new to report.” He thinks the right time for Spawn to return to the action figure aisles is when there is a significant vehicle for him to ride in on... and that means a full-blown film rocketing to theaters across the globe. “There's a handful of people that are waiting for me to finish my script, and once we do that, I think very quickly, once it gets polished up, we'll be rolling film on it. I'm looking for a replacement writer on the Spawn comic that will free me up. I keep threatening every year to finish that damn script, but I keep getting distracted with things like the comic book and new toy lines so I have a tendency to fill up my idle time not with the movie script but with coming up with other creative endeavors.”

In closing, Todd remarked he wished the photos they are taking could convey the cool factor of these Walking Dead Construction builds, but SDCC will be the first opportunity for fans to see them in all their glory, first-hand, and that will be the highlight of the show for him.

The Building Sets: MSRP $9.99-64.99 – Daryl Dixon with Chopper, The Governor’s Room, and Prison Tower with Gate. Expand your brick building apocalypse with additional figure and accessory packs.

Blind Bag Figures: MSRP $2.99 – Daryl Dixon, Michonne, The Governor, Carl Grimes, Riot Gear Walker, Michonne’s Pet Walker, and Herd Walkers.

McFarlane Toys’ The Walking Dead building sets and figures will be available this fall only at Toys“R”Us stores nationwide and online at ToysRUs.com.

Danny Trejo and Dave Bautista Talk Twinkies in First L.A. Slasher Clip

Dread Central - Tue, 07/08/2014 - 14:09

While we're still waiting for the trailer, which we're told is going to be hitting the Net shortly, we managed to get our hands on the first clip from upcoming film L.A. Slasher today, featuring pro wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista and all-around badass Danny Trejo.

Check out the clip below, courtesy of Comic Book Movie, and keep your eyes peeled for more real soon!

Circus Road Films has picked up Martin Owen's horror/satire feature L.A. Slasher. Glenn Reynolds' Circus Road is handling domestic sales.

The film stars Danny Trejo (Machete), Mischa Barton (“The O.C.”), Dave Bautista (Riddick), Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight), Drake Bell (“Drake & Josh”), Brooke Hogan (“Hogan Knows Best”), Tori Black (Not Another Celebrity Movie), and Marisa Lauren (“Superhero Movie”), with the voice of Andy Dick (“NewsRadio”) as the "L.A. Slasher."

Synopsis
Produced by Jeffrey Wright and Daniel Sollinger (Girls Against Boys), L.A. Slasher is a biting, social satire about reality TV and the glorification of people who are famous for simply being famous. It explores why it has become acceptable and even admirable for people to become influential and wealthy based on no merit or talent - purely through notoriety achieved through shameful behavior. Incensed by the tabloid culture which celebrates it, the "L.A. Slasher" publicly abducts a series of reality TV stars while the media and general public in turn begin to question if society is better off without them.
