Darclight Gets Contracted to Eric England

Dread Central - Thu, 05/09/2013 - 14:36

Eric England's latest and most infectious tale of terror, Contracted, has been picked up by Darclight Films, and the plan is to spread the sickness all over the Cannes Film Market. If you're going, pack a respirator. Ya never know!

From the Press Release
Darclight Films announces the acquisition and Cannes market premiere of psychological horror-thriller CONTRACTED. First-look screenings will be presented to buyers starting next week.

CONTRACTED takes the traditional zombie story and seamlessly transforms it into something wholly modern and horrifying, a macabre trip that needs to be experienced to believe it.

CONTRACTED tells the terrifying tale of a young girl who has a one-night stand with a stranger, contracting what she thinks is a sexually transmitted disease, but it is actually something far worse. As things begin to crumble around her, she's sent on a disturbing and bloodcurdling journey, sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. With nail-biting suspense and frightening twists, CONTRACTED is a horror film for those who think they've seen it all.

“CONTRACTED is a uniquely breakthrough and edgy genre-driven film with a shrewd twist on the traditional zombie film and worldwide commercial viability,” said Clay Epstein, VP Sales & Acquisitions for Arclight Films. “We’re excited to present CONTRACTED to buyers and audiences in Cannes.”

Contracted is directed by Eric England (MADISON COUNTY) and features a who's who of horror film and television thesps including Najarra Townsend (2005's hit indie ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW, "90210"), Caroline Williams (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2, HATCHET III, NIP/TICK), celebrated horror force Simon Barrett (V/H/S, ABC'S OF DEATH, YOU'RE NEXT), Charley Koontz ("COMMUNITY," RUBBER), Dave Holmes ("RENO: 911" DVD ON TV), and Ruben Pla (INSIDIOUS), amongst others.

"We’re delighted to be partnering up with Clay Epstein and the Arclight team,” said producer Raphael Margules. “They understand the picture, and we’re eager to unveil it to audiences worldwide. We believe CONTRACTED offers what genre fans want from a horror film, with new twists and turns sure to have them gasping for breath."

“CONTRACTED tells a disturbing side of the story that other zombie films have never told,” said director Eric England. “We had an amazing cast and crew on this film that helped create something so unnerving and relatable that you'll be glad it's not happening to you.”

Darclight Films is handling international sales for CONTRACTED, and XYZ Films will be handling North American sales. The film was produced by Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures.

Director Wes Ball Shows Off Some Creepy Concept Art for The Maze Runner

Dread Central - Thu, 05/09/2013 - 14:27

First-time feature director Wes Ball has a daunting task ahead of him to adapt James Dashner‘s bestselling 2009 young-adult novel The Maze Runner, and the former special effects designer shared some concept art that he himself created for inspiration.

EW posted the following image and description:

The massive walls seem simultaneously industrial and ancient. They have the scale of natural rock formations, but there is no such thing as straight lines like these in the wild. From the creeping vines and empty corridors, the walls also seem to have been totally abandoned... except for a group of young boys who live in the grassy center of this intimidating structure, [but] not all of the boys are eager to find out what lies beyond the barrier.

20th Century Fox has just begun production on the saga, and here's how Ball explains the illustration: “It was for me, really. I like writing images. I started daydreaming about what it’s like to be at those doors and looking up at those walls.”

The story begins with the lead character, Thomas (played by "Teen Wolf"‘s Dylan O’Brien), awakening inside a rusting, rumbling industrial elevator, which ascends from some unfathomable depth — into a peaceful meadow. He has no idea who he is or where he comes from. “The doors open and deposit him in this rustic, idyllic place surrounded by walls on all sides,” says Ball. "[Thomas] is just one of many boys who have come up once a month in the last three years. They have been trying to figure out how the hell to get out of this place and deal with the maze beyond the walls. The doors open in the morning, and the boys have to get back before they close because nobody survives a night in the maze.”

There’s something out there that preys on the ones who stay out too long. The kids call the creatures Grievers, though none has ever actually seen one (and lived)... Only the bravest of the boys are willing to venture out to look for escape. A moment like that is what Ball hints at amid the tiny figures in this concept drawing. ”Thomas is the boy who takes that step forward when everybody else takes a step back,” he says. “He’s curious. That’s partly perceived as a threat, but it actually may be the thing that gets him out.”

Look for The Maze Runner, starring Dylan O’Brien, Jacob Latimore, Will Poulter, Kaya Scodelario, Aml Ameen, Blake Cooper, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, on February 14, 2014. Noah Oppenheim and James Dashner (author of the novel) wrote the script. Wes Ball directs.

John Carpenter Talks Adapting and Directing a Dead Space Film

    Dread Central - Thu, 05/09/2013 - 13:46

Now here are two things that could go together as well as peanut butter and jelly: John Carpenter and Dead Space. Check out what the Master of Horror had to say about potentially helming an adaptation of the popular video game series.

"You know it's great," Carpenter told Game Informer in relation to the Dead Space franchise. "The first game was more - I guess it was like Alien - but not quite. It was a little different than that. I maintain that Dead Space would just make a great movie because you have these people coming onto an abandoned, shut-down spaceship, and they have to start it up and something's on board. It's just great stuff. I would love to make Dead Space [into a film], I'll tell you that right now. That one is ready-made."

Carpenter also chimed in with his $.02 about the Aliens: Colonial Marines fiasco. "It's all about money," he said. "It's not that something is being mistreated, it's just another marketing issue." Admitting he was suckered into buying the game, he added, "They're trying to get you to buy the game, which I stupidly did."

    Dead Space Synopsis:
Dead Space is a third-person survival horror action video game developed by EA Redwood Shores (now known as Visceral Games) for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows. It was released on October 14, 2008, on the consoles and October 20 for Windows. The player takes on the role of an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who battles the polymorphic undead species called the "Necromorphs" on board a stricken interstellar mining ship named The USG Ishimura.

Fox TV Picks Up - and Gives Us a First Look at - Sleepy Hollow and Almost Human

    Dread Central - Wed, 05/08/2013 - 22:10

The TV Upfronts begin next week, but already the networks are making announcements to attract advertisers. Fox picked up four new shows, including one we've had our eyes on for a while: "Sleepy Hollow," directed by Len Wiseman. We have all the details and some early photos.

"Sleepy Hollow," from Star Trek team Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, finds Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) being resurrected to find a world on the brink of doom. Here's the official synopsis:

From co-creators/executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (the Star Trek and Transformers franchises, “Fringe”), the thrilling new action-adventure "SLEEPY HOLLOW" is a modern-day retelling of Washington Irving’s classic. ICHABOD CRANE (Tom Mison) is resurrected and pulled two and a half centuries through time to find that the world is on the brink of destruction and that he is humanity’s last hope, forcing him to team up with a contemporary police officer (Nicole Beharie) to unravel a mystery that dates all the way back to the founding fathers.

"SLEEPY HOLLOW" is from K/O Paper Products in association with 20th Century Fox Television. The series is co-created by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Phillip Iscove and Len Wiseman (“Hawaii Five-0,” Underworld and Total Recall). The series is executive-produced by Kurtzman, Orci and Wiseman and Heather Kadin. Iscove serves as supervising producer. Wiseman directed the pilot.

Along with "Sleepy Hollow," Fox nabbed "Almost Human" (working title) from J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman, which stars Karl Urban, Michael Ealy, and Lili Taylor. It follows police officers partnered with lifelike androids 35 years in the future, and the pilot was directed by Brad Anderson. (We won't be covering "Almost Human" any further probably, but with names like Abrams, Anderson, and Urban involved, we figured a lot of you would be interested.)

From Emmy Award-winning executive producer J.J. Abrams and creator/executive producer J.H. Wyman and starring Karl Urban, Michael Ealy and Emmy Award nominee Lili Taylor, "ALMOST HUMAN" (working title) is an action-packed police drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. An unlikely connection is forged when a cop with an aversion to robots and a robot with unexpected emotional responses investigate cases in a brave new world.

"ALMOST HUMAN" (wt) is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television. The series is created by J.H. Wyman, who wrote the pilot. The series is executive-produced by Wyman, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk. Kathy Lingg (“Person of Interest,” “Revolution,” “Fringe”) and Reid Shane (“Fringe”) are co-executive producers. Brad Anderson (“Fringe,” “The Killing”) directed and served as co-executive producer on the pilot.

    Dread Central - Wed, 05/08/2013 - 19:39

Hot on the heels of yesterday's one-sheet debut, the official trailer for the new terror tale from Steven C. Miller, Under the Bed (review), has hit the interwebs; and we have it right here for ya! Chills and all! Dig it!

Under the Bed, the new horror/thriller from the producers of V/H/S and director Steven C. Miller (The Aggression Scale, Silent Night), stars Jonny Weston, the young star of Chasing Mavericks, and Gattlin Griffith (Green Lantern, Changeling). Written by Eric Stolze, the film also stars Peter Holden, Musetta Vander, and Kelcie Stranahan. It tells the story of two brothers who team up to battle the monster living under their bed.

XLrator Media will release the film July 19th.

    Synopsis:
Every child knows about the monster under the bed—Neal Hausman’s mistake was trying to fight it. Neal (Jonny Weston) has returned from a two-year exile following his tragic attempt to defeat the monster, only to find his father ticking ever closer to a breakdown, a new stepmother who fears him, and his little brother, Paul (Gattlin Griffith), terrorized by the same monster. While Neal and Paul work together to try to fight the nocturnal menace, their parents are taking desperate measures to get the family back to normal. With no support from their parents, the brothers have nothing to rely on but each other and courage beyond belief.
