The Walking Dead: Recap of Episode 3.16 - Welcome to the Tombs

Sun, 03/31/2013 - 22:33

In tonight's "The Walking Dead" season finale, the two factions went to war. Did your favorite character survive? Were you devastated at the end of the episode? We already knew how many would die tonight. Keep your tissues handy for the recap.

"Welcome to the Tombs" was written by Glen Mazzara and directed by Ernest Dickerson.

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read any further if you haven’t watched the episode yet. This is a recap with specific details from this episode. Continue only if you have already watched it.

We open with the governor brutally beating Milton for torching his zombies. He then demands that Milton kill a still tied up Andrea, but he can't do it, trying to turn on the Governor instead. But the Governor fatally stabs him and leaves Milton locked in the room with Andrea so that when he turns, he'll have no choice but to kill her.

When we return from the opening, while everyone at the prison was getting ready, Carl put together a bag for baby Judith, filling it with keepsakes like the framed picture of his family that he retrieved from the bar, but he kept Rick's old sheriff badge in his pocket instead. Leaving his cell with his bag, Carl seemed so much older than his age now.

They were all packing up their vehicles when Glenn commented to Rick that he had never seen Carl this mad. As Rick got into his car, he paused to take stock of the prison and saw a pregnant Lori looking down from a walkway above. He just shrugged and got in. Carol approached Daryl as he reminisced that Merle had never ever done what he just did. "He gave us a chance," returned Carol gratefully as she helped Daryl up.

Michonne informed Rick that they were ready. She told Rick that she understood Rick's position about giving her up to the Governor. He apologized. She then thanked Rick for taking her in back when she came to the prison with the baby formula. Rick even got to joke about the baby formula being the deciding factor, but then he attributed her staying to Carl. When Rick finally told Michonne that she was one of them now, she let out a knowing but barely-there smile.

Talking to the now-armed Woodbury soldiers, the Governor vilified Rick and the group at the prison, saying that they already killed 8 men and now won't stop until they kill everyone at Woodbury and take everything for themselves. The Governor wanted to end this war, once and for all.

Tyreese and Sasha interrupted the Governor and begged off the fight, saying that they would not fight other people. Tyreese even volunteered to stay at Woodbury to defend the children and said that they would leave if when the Governor returns he wanted them gone. The Governor handed Tyreese a gun and thanked him before leading the army.

Outside the prison, the armed Woodbury convoy arrived and took out the watch towers from afar, as well as the wandering walkers near them. When an enforced truck rammed through the gate of the prison, armed Woodbury soldiers followed in, but there were no signs of Rick and the group. When the truck pulled off the inner metal gate, Allen and Martinez led the charge and pulled the metal door open.

Martinez led the group into the now-empty prison block formerly occupied by Rick and the group. After searching around, the Governor realized that the prison block had emptied out and found Hershel's bible with a highlighted passage about evil and damnation. The Governor was furious. Then he heard noises down a dark passage and went inside with a group.

Andrea called out to a bloodied Milton, who instructed her to retrieved the pair of pliers that he dropped for her earlier. While trying to get the pliers, Andrea promised to get them both out, but Milton demanded that she kill him instead.

Martinez and the Governor, in two separate groups, wandered through the prison's dark hallways looking for any signs of life and got closer to the noises.

Back at Woodbury, Tyreese reported that everything was quiet during his watch. Sasha asked what they would have to do when the Governor returned and Tyreese suggested that they try to slip out the way Andrea did. When Sasha commented about how going to the prison would not have done Andrea any good, Tyreese insisted that he go another another watch instead of Sasha.

Andrea was still trying to retrieve the pliers when Milton got quiet. Afraid that he had died, she braced herself but Milton wasn't dead yet. He asked her why she stayed at Woodbury after she found out about Rick and the prison. She replied that she wanted to save everyone including the Governor. She even confessed that she had a chance to kill the Governor once but she didn't because she wanted to save everyone. She paused for a moment when Milton got quiet again. But he still wasn't dead... yet. He implored her to hurry.

As the Governor and his troops continued with their search, they got interrupted by some flashbombs that started bringing walkers to them, causing mayhem and walker killing. The Woodbury army ran outside into the open right into Glenn's and Maggie's firing range. They were both fully decked out in riot gear. Hershel, Beth and Carl were observing the fight from the woods. Carl insisted that he should be there fighting. Maggie and Glenn continue to attack from above, forcing the Woodbury army to retreat and drive away. After they were gone, Maggie and Glenn stopped shooting and went down.

In the woods, a young Woodbury fighter (Ben?) ran into Hershel, Beth and Carl. When he implored them not to shoot, Carl calmly aimed his gun at the kid and shot him in cold blood.

Rick and the group surveyed the prison after the army left. They had driven the army away. Daryl insisted that they go after the army and bring the fight to Woodbury. Before making any decision, Rick wanted to check on everyone first. Returning to their prison block, they started to reclaim their space. Carl told Rick that he would go to Woodbury with the group. Carl had even taken out a soldier earlier, a soldier that Hershel clarified was only a kid. Carl was adamant about going. After he walked off, Hershel told Rick what Carl did and how Carl did not have to shoot the kid, since he was about to surrender to Carl. Rick did not want to believe, but he knew Hershel was telling the truth.

The Governor stopped the convoy to yell at his army for retreating. When they protested, the Governor started shooting and killing his people instead. While some tried to run off, Allen aimed his gun at the Governor. When Allen paused, the Governor just him in the head while Martinez looked on helplessly. The Governor went to inspect his kills and shot them in the head again. A woman lying under another body was still alive but he didn't see her. The Governor went back into his car and quietly motioned his last two henchmen to climb on.

Andrea still struggled with her escape by pliers and tried to calm herself that Milton was still alive, but she could sense he was turning. She tried to work faster as Milton started moving.

Rick and the group were preparing to leave when Rick confronted Carl about his shooting earlier. He asked Carl directly if the kid was surrendering. Carl insisted that he couldn't take a chance at letting the kid live. Carl didn't kill the walker that killed Dale. Rick didn't kill Andrew and Andrew returned to kill Lori. Rick was in the same room as the Governor but didn't kill him and the Governor killed Merle. Carl said he did what he had to do and told Rick to go, so that Woodbury wouldn't kill any more of them. Rick picked up his sheriff badge that Carl dropped.

Glenn and Maggie tell Rick they are staying in case the Governor returned. Daryl led the charge as Rick and Michonne drove behind them. Closing the gate behind them, both Beth and Carol got to take out some walkers.

Rick, Daryl and Michonne came up to where the Woodbury vehicles had stopped and dispatched of the former Woodbury fighters now turned walkers. They found the woman who was still alive, now hiding inside a truck.

Andrea was still working on her bindings when she realized Milton had turned. She struggled faster and walker Milton got up and headed towards her, snarling. The camera panned away and we heard her screaming and yelling and some thudding noises.

Rick, Daryl, Michonne and Karen came close to Woodbury's wall when they got pinned down by Tyreese and Sasha's gunfire. Karen yelled out to Tyreese but was pulled back down by Rick. She yelled back that the Governor killed all of the other Woodbury fighters and that Rick, Daryl and Michonne saved her. Rick and his group came out of hiding to talk to Tyreese. He was coming to Woodbury to finish the fight but that was before he found out what the Governor did. He also said that Andrea never made it back to the prison.

Rick, Daryl, Michonne and Tyreese found the Governor's torture shack with a pool of blood flowing out. When they opened the door, they saw walker Milton dead near the torture chair and Andrea next to the door. Andrea was burning up, said Michonne, and Andrea showed them her bite wound. Andrea asked if everyone was still alive. Directed at Michonne, Andrea was happy that she found Rick's group. "No one can make it alone now," said Andrea as Michonne cried. Andrea just didn't want anyone to die.

Andrea insisted that she had to kill herself while she still could. They handed her a gun. Michonne told Andrea she would stay with her. Daryl and Rick left Andrea with Michonne. Andrea looked at Michone one last time as Rick, Daryl and Tyreese waited outside the door when a gunshot rang out.

Daryl and Rick returned to the prison with a school bus. As they greeted their friends at the prison, former Woodbury residents descended from the bus. When Carl asked, Rick said that they would be joining them now. Carl did not like it and ran off. Rick took another look at the overpass, but this time he didn't see Lori anymore. Outside, the walkers continue their wandering.

What did you think of the ending? Did you need that box of tissues and a visit to the therapist's office? Meanwhile the Governor's still out there so go to the comments section below and tell us what you'll be doing to wait for Season 4.

Event Report - Norman Reedus Talks The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct at Full Moon Tattoo & Horror Festival

Sun, 03/31/2013 - 20:45

While most of the horror world spent the weekend on pins and needles waiting for the season finale of "The Walking Dead," yours truly spent it at the Full Moon Tattoo & Horror Festival, where I had the chance to chat with Norman Reedus about The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct.

The 12th annual Full Moon Tattoo & Horror Festival wrapped up today at the Nashville Convention Center (it ran all weekend, March 29-31). Horror fans enjoyed shopping, participating in fun events, and meeting their favorite horror celebrities. The convention featured an impressive lists of celebrities including Linda Blair (The Exorcist), Norman Reedus ("The Walking Dead"), Sid Haig (The Devil's Rejects), Adrienne King (Friday the 13th), and many more.

Thousands of fans endured waiting in dreary and wet weather to get their tickets to the event. "I have been waiting in line for three hours," stated die-hard fan Sarah Gomez. Sarah admitted that she traveled all the way from New York to meet one particular heartthrob. "I freakin' love 'The Walking Dead' and Norman Reedus. I had to meet him!" exclaimed Sarah. After a quick poll of the crowd, it appeared that the biggest draw for the event was the guests from the hit AMC television show "The Walking Dead."

The event also featured acclaimed tattoo artists (around 120) from all over the world with over a hundred awards being given out for tattoo contests. Fans could get tattooed right there on the floor by some of the best artists in the industry--which means if you have been considering a tattoo, then this is the best event for it. (Make your plans for next year now!) Where else do you get the chance to get a tattoo, talk with a horror legend, and then catch a scary movie? Some of the films shown at this year's festival included Old Habits Die Hard, Friday the 13th: Part 6, and Night of the Living Dead to name a few with several films being hosted by the celebrities themselves. The fun didn't stop there! Once the event ended at 11PM each night, then fans could head over to the after show parties, which included the Club Chaos Dance Party and Generation Landslide.

Full Moon Tattoo & Horror Festival is a great event for horror and tattoo fans alike. The festival also brought out hundreds of cosplayers, who flooded the convention center with some of their scariest and bloodiest outfits. There is no better way to spend your Easter weekend than with a convention center full of zombies, ghosts, and ghouls! With all the horror madness, there was only one thing missing--GAMES! This being said and with the recent release of The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, there was only one thing left to do...talk gaming with Norman Reedus.

Read our The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct review.

Reedus, aka Daryl Dixon, gave us his thoughts on the new game, summing it up in one word: "Awesome." Norman still thinks it is pretty badass despite all the negative reviews the Activision game received. "It is a very smart game because of all the different ways to kill, and you have think on your feet by hiding and collecting things," stated Reedus. He also commented that it is much easier to use the crossbow in the game than it was in real life on the television show.

Norman admits he is a noob when it comes to the gaming industry and that he only recently got into gaming with his teenage son. Besides playing The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, he also enjoys first-person shooters and is a fan of the Call of Duty franchise.

What did he take away with his work on The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct? "A lot of hard work goes into making a video game," commented Norman.

Full Moon Tattoo & Horror Festival is a must-attend show for those who live in the area so make sure to keep updated by visiting the official Full Moon Tattoo & Horror Festival website.

The Host Not So Heavenly at the Easter Weekend Box Office

Sun, 03/31/2013 - 19:54

If Open Road was thinking it had the next Twilight on its hands with The Host, also written by Stephenie Meyer, it had better think again. The film had a disappointing $11 million, 6th place debut, a sure sign that it's not the next hot young adult franchise everyone is scrambling to find.

Per Box Office Mojo, The Host's opening is about on par with what Beautiful Creatures grossed over its initial five-day holiday weekend run last month but is obviously a fraction of the first Twilight movie's $69.6 million start. The audience was 78 percent female and 61 percent under the age of 25 (a bit younger than Twilight's typical crowd). They awarded the movie a "B-" CinemaScore, which pretty much ensures that word-of-mouth won't improve things for the film, which we expect to drop out of theatres pretty quickly. Thankfully, it's the last of its breed until August, when Sony releases The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

Read our The Host review here!

As for the remaining genre stragglers peppering the Top 10 this weekend who battled it out with #1 and #2 offerings G.I. Joe: Retaliation and The Croods, respectively, we had Oz: The Great and Powerful at #5 with $11.6 million (it's total is now close to $200 million) and The Call at #7 with $4.8 million (just about $40 million total).

Next weekend is all about Evil Dead... will horror fans support the one remake we've seen in ages that's actually worthy of a box office win, or will they opt for that other blast from the past opening April 5th, Jurassic Park 3D? Check back on Sunday for the results!

WonderCon 2013: Sony Unveils a New Trailer for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Sun, 03/31/2013 - 02:08

Along with Evil Dead, Sony brought The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones to WonderCon 2013 and left behind this brand new trailer. On hand for a Q&A with the screening were the book's author, Cassandra Clare, along with stars Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Kevin Zegers.

Per IGN, who debuted the trailer online, Clare said that the film, which she hasn't seen in its entirety, is as close to the spirit of the book as possible without being 10 hours long. She recalled the great access she was given, from hours of conversations with the casting director to visits to the set and even being able to make a cameo in the movie. Collins said they needed to make [her character] Clary accessible to the audience, someone who could be your friend amidst all these crazy situations. Bower said his character will be both vulnerable and snarky.

BBC America's new series "Orphan Black" has kicked off, and if you watched the premiere and liked it, here's a preview of Episode 1.02, "Instinct," along with some new poster art that shows off four iterations of the clone at the heart of the story.

- Beth: The valiant, damaged cop who takes her own life

- Cosima: The eccentric geek girl with a scientific mind

Led by Tatiana Maslany as Sarah, the cast includes Jordan Gavaris as Felix, Sarah’s thorny foster brother and her one true confidante; Dylan Bruce as Paul, Beth’s boyfriend – a decent guy with chiseled features, but more complicated than he appears; Maria Doyle Kennedy as Mrs. S, Sarah’s hard-nosed working class foster mother from across the pond; Michael Mando as Vic, Sarah’s volatile ex, aptly nicknamed “Vic the Dick”; Kevin Hanchard as Art, a veteran detective working alongside Beth who grows suspicious of her erratic behavior: and Skyler Wexler as Sarah’s seven-year-old daughter. The ten-part conspiracy thriller, produced by Temple Street Productions, is co-created by Graeme Manson and John Fawcett with Manson also serving as writer and Fawcett as director.

WonderCon 2013: Pacific Rim Trading Cards Announced and More!

Sat, 03/30/2013 - 21:22

And the mighty marketing wheel behind Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim continues to gather speed! Hot on the heels of our reveal of the Pacific Rim graphic novel prequel's cover art comes a look at the newest collectibles on the block, Pacific Rim trading cards!

Unfortunately for most of us, these are only for attendees of the show, but we're sure you're gonna be able to find them on eBay and the like at nearly the cost of building your own Jaeger robot. Why? Because people suck. In any event these cards are smaller versions of the robot posters that have been coming out all week with some cool stats added in. We especially dig on the kill count area. Apparently Striker Eureka is the most badass of all, raking in 11 Kaiju kills! Check out the set below.

In other Pacific Rim WonderCon news, Casey King was at the panel and called in with some quick details. Other than the aforementioned graphic novel, Guillermo del Toro introduced a new trailer that featured some big time robot on monster action including a scene in which one of the Jaeger robots lifts an oil tanker out of the water and swings it like a baseball bat at one of the flick's creatures. From what King says, the crowd literally went absolutely nuts.

Now for the bad part... According to Del Toro this trailer was created specifically for WonderCon and there are no plans to show it elsewhere. Guess we're all gonna have to wait for the goodies until they come. We're okay with that. It was also revealed that the flick features nine different robots and twelve different Kaiju creatures. For us we're sure that will all equal out into absolute giant monster nirvana!

Big thank to Casey for calling in with the goods. For more WonderCon coverage check out his website All That's Epic.

Look for Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo del Toro, in theatres July 12th of 2013. Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Rinko Kikuchi, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., and Diego Klattenhoff star.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes--a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)--who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Sat, 03/30/2013 - 20:45

Evil Dead terrorized the attendees at WonderCon in Anaheim, California, today, and Casey King called in with some highlights from the panel and a rundown of what you cats missed. First up there was some sequel talk...

Director Fede Alvarez told the absolutely electrified crowd in attendance that should his film do well, he has plans to do his sequel while Raimi hopefully does Army of Darkness 2. Then he would like there to be a seventh crossover film which will tie the franchise all together. Bruce Campbell agreed, chiming in that "seven is a nice number."

King goes on to report that a special trailer for WonderCon was also shown that was slightly different from the red-band one we already have (we suspect it'll be online soon so check back), and finally the panel wrapped with a video message from Sam Raimi introducing the clip which ran earlier this week as an exclusive on World Star Hip Hop. You can watch that below.

Ghost House Pictures is producing the much anticipated remake of The Evil Dead, the film that effectively launched the careers of Sam Raimi (Spider-Man franchise, Darkman, Drag Me to Hell), Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night), and Bruce Campbell, who played the Ash character and was co-producer of the original. They are now back to produce an Evil Dead for today's audience that's high on the horror, gore, plot twists, and more from a screenplay written by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues with Diablo Cody. Executive producers are J.R. Young, Nathan Kahane, Joseph Drake, and Peter Schlessel.

WonderCon 2013: The Conjuring Too Scary for the MPAA

Sat, 03/30/2013 - 20:29

Our guy Casey King is busy wandering the halls of WonderCon in Anaheim, CA, and he took some time from his drinking in the weirdness to call in with several news items that we're gonna break up into a couple of stories. The following one has us very excited.

During the panel for James Wan's The Conjuring, Wan revealed to the crowd in attendance that he shot the film to get a PG-13 rating; however, upon screening it for the MPAA, they slapped the movie with an R rating anyway because they deemed it too scary.

Two clips were also shown at the event, the first of which is basically what you guys saw in the trailer that's been around for a couple of weeks. The second, however, has to do with the sisters sleeping when one suddenly gets yanked awake in bed by her feet. After looking under the bed to make sure no one is there, from under the bed she sees the door on the opposite side of the room slowly closing. From there she wakes up her sister and tells her that there's something in the room watching them. The door then slams shut, and the room goes dark. According to Casey the crowd went nuts.

Wan was joined on stage by paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren and Cindy and Andrea Perron, whose experiences with the unknown are the basis for the film.

Please, video lords, give us this movie immediately!

Synopsis
Before there was Amityville, there was Harrisville. Based on a true story described in the book House of Darkness, House of Light: The True Story by Andrea Perron, The Conjuring tells the horrifying tale of how world renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were called upon to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.

From New Line Cinema comes a feature film drawn from the case files of married demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Conjuring stars Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga ("Bates Motel," Orphan) and Patrick Wilson (Hard Candy, Insidious) as the Warrens and Ron Livingston (HBO’s “Band of Brothers”) and Lili Taylor (Public Enemies) as Roger and Carolyn Perron, residents of the house.

Joey King (Crazy, Stupid, Love), Shanley Caswell (Detention), Haley McFarland (TV’s “Lie to Me”), Mackenzie Foy (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn), and newcomer Kyla Deaver play the Perrons’ five daughters, and Sterling Jerins (upcoming World War Z) is the Warrens’ little girl, Judy.

James Wan (Saw, Insidious) directs from a screenplay by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes (The Reaping). The film is produced by Peter Safran, Tony DeRosa-Grund, and Rob Cowan with Walter Hamada and Dave Neustadter serving as executive producers. Reuniting with the director are members of his Insidious creative team, director of photography John Leonetti, editor Kirk Morri, and costume designer Kristin M. Burke, and his Saw production designer, Julie Berghoff. The music is composed by Joseph Bishara.

New Line Cinema presents an Evergreen Media Group/Safran Company Production of a James Wan Film: The Conjuring. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

The film opens in the US and the UK on July 19, 2013.
