Steam Summer Sale Day 3: Zombies!

bloody disgusting - Sat, 06/21/2014 - 16:06

In their infinite wisdom, Valve knows what you want — or at least they do if you want zombies — because that’s what we’re getting in the third day of Steam’s annual Summer Sale. Day 2 brought the scares, and today they’re following them up with a handful of deals on a few great zombie-themed games, including 7 Days to Die for $13.74 (45% off), Project Zomboid for $10.04 (33% off), and Contagion for $4.99 (75% off).

I haven’t spent much time with the first two games, but if you’re looking to shoot some good old fashioned Romero zombies in their stupid ugly, rotten faces, then Contagion is definitely worth checking out.

For the full list of deals, head on over to Steam.

Dread Central - Sat, 06/21/2014 - 10:00

We've been enjoying the dark tone of the teasers released thus far for BBC America's upcoming "Intruders," and now that the official launch trailer has arrived, we're even more intrigued. When can we finally see the show? Read on for the details and to watch the new preview!

"Intruders," from writer/executive producer Glen Morgan ("The X-Files") will premiere on Saturday, August 23rd, at 10/9c. The series is based on Michael Marshall Smith's novel The Intruders.

Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project, Exists) and Daniel Stamm (13 Sins, The Last Exorcism) are directing various episodes. The creative team includes acclaimed production designer Mark Freeborn ("Breaking Bad"). The series is executive produced by Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner for BBC Worldwide Productions, Morgan, and Rose Lam ("The L Word").

"Intruders" stars celebrated British actor John Simm ("Life on Mars," "State of Play," and "Doctor Who") and Oscar winner Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite, Norma Jean & Marilyn, Human Trafficking) with James Frain ("The White Queen," "Grimm," "True Blood") and Tory Kittles ("True Detective") and introducing Millie Brown ("Once Upon a Time in Wonderland"), making her debut in a series lead role.

Synopsis:
"Intruders" is about a secret society devoted to chasing immortality by seeking refuge in the bodies of others.

A contemporary, chilling, paranormal tale set in the moody Pacific Northwest, "Intruders" spins a fascinating and complex web of drama. John Simm stars as Jack Whelan, a Los Angeles cop turned writer who has escaped a dark, violent past for a seemingly quiet life with his wife, Amy. ‘State of Decay’ Cast Coming Soon to ‘Minecraft’ XBLA

bloody disgusting - Sat, 06/21/2014 - 02:48

Mojang is bringing the sixth skin pack to the XBLA version of Minecraft soon, and this time it will include part of the cast from Undead Labs’ post-apocalyptic hit, State of Decay. It’s a fitting pairing, though I can’t say I recognize any of the character skins, and that’s after spending an inordinate amount of time with State of Decay and both of its expansions.

I suppose none of the characters really stood out to me, at least not in the same way as Telltale’s The Walking Dead, which has also made its way to the popular sandbox game. Check them out below and let me know if any look familiar to you.

Skin pack 6 will be available soon, though we don’t have a price or release date yet.

Big Casting Update for NBC's Aquarius Including Who'll Be Playing Charles Manson

Dread Central - Fri, 06/20/2014 - 19:32

One new series we're really looking forward to is NBC's "Aquarius," starring David Duchovny, and if you are, too, here's a juicy casting update for the show, including who'll be portraying the infamous leader of the Manson family.

Per TVLine, Gethin Anthony (pictured; best known as Renly Baratheon in "Game of Thrones"), Grey Damon ("Friday Night Lights," Oldboy), and Emma Dumont ("Bunheads") have all signed on for the 13-episode "event" series, which stars Duchovny as a cop who goes undercover to track Manson and his brood.

Anthony will portray Manson, described here as the “archetypal authentic hippie freak” whose intense charisma draws young followers to him in droves. A jailbird who has spent half his life in prison, Manson dominates his young female followers through a combination of sex, drugs, and a paternalistic and caring attitude that masks his inner evil. A dark, seductive force of nature, he recruits young Emma Karn (Dumont) to his ranks — but his interest in her may be far beyond the merely sexual. In fact, he may have embroiled her father in a far-reaching conspiracy.

Damon, meanwhile, will co-star as Hodiak’s (Duchovny) new partner — and the two are well matched in their maverick methods and savvy instincts. He helps Hodiak trace the missing Emma Karn, going undercover himself to learn more about Manson.

Synopsis
It’s 1967, and the era of free love, drug experimentation, and the Vietnam War is in full effect. When the teenage daughter of a respected lawyer goes missing, L.A. Police Sgt. Sam Hodiak (David Duchovny; “Californication,” “The X-Files”) starts asking around. He soon discovers that the hippie kids he’s questioning don’t take kindly to cops, especially one with hair as short as his. Needing the help of someone they will trust, he partners with rebellious undercover cop Brian Shafe, a man who’s more comfortable rolling a joint than patrolling a beat.

It’s not long before they stumble upon a small-time cult leader seeking out vulnerable women to join his cause. From there, they follow this man’s trail down a rabbit hole of drugs, sex, murder, and cultural revolution. Little could they know, however, the guy they’re hunting will eventually become the killer we now recognize as Charles Manson. He was a lost soul who desperately wanted to get into the music scene of the ’60s until something snapped. This is the show that will explore the cat and mouse game between him and the police that will go on for several seasons, ultimately ending with the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders.

Writer John McNamara (“In Plain Sight”) serves as executive producer with Marty Adelstein (“Prison Break”), David Duchovny, and Melanie Greene. “Aquarius” is a production of ITV Studios America and Marty Adelstein Productions.

First Look at Digging Up the Marrow?

Dread Central - Fri, 06/20/2014 - 17:13

It was back during Comic-Con of last year when we last told you about Adam Green's latest directorial feature film, Digging Up the Marrow. The flick is said to be coming later this year, and we may have just gotten our first look at one of... the film's creatures?

Both Green and his partner in the project, Alex Pardee, have posted the same photo on Twitter with no caption. Just the hashtag #TheMarrowIsReal.

Given the aforementioned hashtag, we can only assume this is our first look at one of the many horrors in the film. Digging Up the Marrow is a documentary look at monster art and the reality behind the horrific fantasies. Below you’ll find the newly tweeted image as well as the official teaser poster.

Looks Like We’re Finally Getting a ‘Dead Rising’ Movie

bloody disgusting - Fri, 06/20/2014 - 15:49

It’s hard to believe that Dead Rising made its debut on the Xbox 360 eight long years ago. It was the first game I ever played on the console, and now, six games later and we’re finally getting a feature-length movie adaptation. Now before you get too excited, you should know that this won’t see a theatrical release. Instead, it will premiere as a timed exclusive on Crackle, Sony’s VOD platform, before it’s made available on-demand elsewhere and on physical media.

The Dead Rising film will be penned by Tim Carter and produced by Tomas Harlan, the co-owners of Contradiction Films, which also produced the Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series for Machinima.

“Dead Rising has a built-in fan base and rich characters and plotlines that are ideal for digital storytelling and on target for Legendary’s brand,” said Tom Lesinski, president of content and distribution at Legendary Digital Media. “Crackle and Content are adept at distributing cutting-edge digital content and we look forward to delivering a highly engaging and cool series for a global audience.”

Crackle apps are available for free on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as mobile devices, smart TVs and media players, including Roku, Apple TV and Chromecast.

This really isn’t all that surprising, seeing as the franchise has sold a cool 6.5+ million copies worldwide. Is this something you’re interested in seeing, and if you are, which game in the series — if any — would you like to see adapted? Of the main series, I wouldn’t mind returning to the story teased in Dead Rising 2. I liked the dynamic between Chuck and his sick daughter and I feel there’s plenty there to make a decent film. The other games were a bit shallow, narratively.

For the unaware, Steam’s annual Summer Cheap Games Extravaganza (not real name, though it should be) kicked off yesterday with a few noteworthy deals. Day two is significantly more exciting, at least for horror fans, as it’s slashing prices on a number of horror games.

If you’re interested in getting playing something scary tonight, you can find all these deals and more over on Steam.

‘Tormentum’ Blends Dreams and Nightmares With a Dash of H.R. Giger

bloody disgusting - Fri, 06/20/2014 - 15:15

I don’t often play adventure games, but when I do, I prefer Dos- err, games of the horror persuasion. That’s why Tormentum immediately caught my eye, because it looks like a living nightmare. The imagery is just fantastic, thanks to some stellar H. R. Giger-esque art. But what makes this game even more impressive is the fact that it’s being developed by a three-man team. Get familiar with it in the trailer below!

If you’d like to support Tormentum, feel free to head on over to its Indiegogo campaign.

‘Star Wars Episode VIII’ and ‘Episode IX’ Have Their Director!

bloody disgusting - Fri, 06/20/2014 - 14:32

Holy sh*t. Rian Johnson, who directed the amazing Looper and Brick (along with several great episodes of “Breaking Bad”) will be directing both Star Wars: Episode VIII and Episode IX. Not the spin-off movies, but the actual next two installments in the primary franchise.

Per Deadline, he’ll be taking over from JJ Abrams. “I’m told that Lucasfilm is making a deal with Looper writer-director Rian Johnson to write and direct Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX. Essentially, that means that the intention is for Johnson to take the baton from JJ Abrams, who has gotten the space franchise off the ground and is right now helming Episode VII… Johnson will take over the core film franchise, and he’ll get started quickly and this will be his preoccupation for quite awhile.

That’s fantastic news for Star Wars. The only real downside is that we won’t be getting a pure dose of Johnson’s unique voice for a while, but since he’s also writing these two installments maybe some of that will work itself in.

Update: He’s writing and directing VIII. He’s writing a treatment for IX. Whether he, or someone else, directs the latter is TBD.
