Bloody First Look at Nick Nicotera in Backmask

Dread Central - Thu, 04/25/2013 - 13:44

We're not entirely sure what actor Nick Nicotera is up to in these latest stills from Marcus Nispel's Backmask, but one thing is certain... the man has bad intentions. We like that. We like that very much! Dig it!

Gage Golightly, Brittany Curran, Stephen Lang, Kelly Blatz,, Brett Dier, Nick Nicotera, Nick Nordella, and Michael Ormsby star. Kirsten Elms penned the script that follows a group of teenagers who accidentally release an evil spirit that starts to possess them one by one.

Synopsis
During a sex, drugs, and rock-fueled party, six small-town teenagers find an old vintage record and decide to play it backwards in order to listen for any subliminal/satanic messages. Lo and behold, a seemingly malevolent spirit quickly infiltrates the group, wreaking havoc as it moves from one body to another. Eventually, however, it's revealed that the spirit in question is actually trying to convey a message....and that the real source of horror isn't particularly paranormal, but rather something (or someone) much closer to home.

Paralegal Activity! Paramount Being Sued over Paranormal Activity 4!

Dread Central - Wed, 04/24/2013 - 22:00

In what is probably the most bizarre news story of the day, indie filmmaker Mike Costanza (The Collingswood Story) is waging a legal battle against Paramount regarding Paranormal Activity 4. Read on for details.

THR reports that Costanza has sued Paramount and producers of Paranormal Activity 4, claiming that the film used specific concepts from his work without permission and without credit or compensation. Costanza, who directed and wrote the excellent 2002 independent horror film The Colllingswood Story, argues in a suit filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court that in 2010 he submitted material from that film in a pitch meeting with the producers. The material included details of webcam chats by characters in their late teens.

Costanza says he was told at the time that producers Steven Schneider and Spencer Medof were not interested in his concepts or in making a film based on his Colllingswood script, which he had registered with the Writers Guild. He now says that the story he wanted to tell is almost identical to what was later used in Paranormal Activity 4, which was released in 2012. That movie cost about $5 million to make and has grossed more than $138 million worldwide.

Costanza is suing for unspecified damages and an order forcing the defendants to destroy all materials based on his concepts.

First Holliston Season 2 Trailer Arrives with a Rimshot

Dread Central - Wed, 04/24/2013 - 20:20

No, not that kind of rimshot, you friggin' perverts (though we're pretty sure you'll be getting that too eventually)! The wait is over, kids! The official trailer for "Holliston" Season 2 has arrived!

Highlights in Season 2 include the series’ first animated episode, finding the town attacked by a giant blob; a Ring-inspired J-horror episode; a found footage episode; and a season finale that will boast two special musical performances by the talented cast and a shocking final scene that will raise the dead. Be on the lookout for special guest stars including Danielle Harris, Bill Moseley, Sid Haig, David Naughton, Kane Hodder, and James Gunn.

Holliston Season 2 begins on June 4th, only on FEARnet.

From the Press Release
FEARnet will premiere the second season of the hit original sitcom "HOLLISTON" on Tuesday, June 4, at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT as part of its Twisted Comedy Block, it was announced by Peter Block, president and general manager of FEARnet. Season Two of the series—which was renewed for a second season after just two episodes had aired—is set for a 10-episode order, an increase of four episodes over Season One.

FEARnet is currently carried by a majority of the major U.S. cable operators and is in nearly 10 million homes and growing. To benefit those fans who are unable to experience the show on Tuesday nights, for the first time ever, each week’s episode will be streamed on FEARnet.com starting Thursday, June 6, and will be available for a seven-day period. Fans can also catch up on episodes on FEARnet On Demand every Wednesday after a new episode premieres.

"HOLLISTON"—created by celebrated genre filmmaker, Adam Green, who wrote and produced the upcoming HATCHET III, in theaters this June—stars Green and fellow real-life genre filmmaker Joe Lynch (KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM, WRONG TURN 2), as “Adam” and “Joe,” two aspiring horror filmmakers, dealing with the struggles of life, love, and career aspirations during the post-college period where nothing ever seems to work out like it should. With relatable storylines inspired by Green’s own life experiences that mash-up traditional situational comedy plot lines with popular horror genre-themes, "HOLLISTON" is the hip and edgy horror-fueled sitcom that FEARnet fans had been waiting for and have now embraced wholeheartedly.

The series also stars Laura Ortiz as Joe’s longtime girlfriend and adorably demented artist; Corri English as Adam’s confused and on-again/off-again childhood sweetheart; and heavy metal icons Dave Brockie as "Oderus Urungus," Adam’s twisted closet-dwelling imaginary friend and guardian angel, and Dee Snider as "Lance Rockett," the delusional wannabe rockstar who runs the local cable station where "Adam" and "Joe" work. Season Two is loaded with appearances from genre stars such as Bill Moseley (TEXAS CHAINSAW), Kane Hodder (HATCHET III), Sid Haig (THE LORDS OF SALEM), David Naughton (AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON), Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN IV and V), Bailee Madison (DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK), and James Gunn (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY).

"'HOLLISTON' demonstrates not only the breadth of FEARnet’s programming, but also the broad reach of the horror culture. We surprised people by opting for a sitcom. Now, we’re going to surprise them with the places 'HOLLISTON' goes, as Season Two really celebrates the genre with episodes that mock, embrace, and twist the types of scary movies we love," said Block.

"We are thrilled with how quickly we’ve found an audience with this series and this cast," added Green. "'HOLLISTON' was designed to fill a missing gap in situational television comedies and speak directly to genre fans who can’t typically find these types of themes or comedic sensibilities in the average sitcom."

Following the events of the first season, Season Two ups the ante of outrageousness, taking the show to a wide range of unexpected places. Highlights include the series’ first animated episode, finding the town attacked by a giant blob; a Ring-inspired J-horror episode; a found footage episode; and a one-hour season finale that will boast two special musical performances by the talented cast and a shocking final scene that will raise the dead. The second season will also feature some surprising twists and developments for the four main friends that will have a major impact on their lives and leave viewers anxious for more.

"HOLLISTON" is produced for FEARnet by Adam Green’s TV and film production company, ArieScope Pictures, in association with The Hacienda Film Co. and A Bigger Boat Productions. Joining Green and Lynch as executive producers are Cory Neal and Andrew Mysko, as well as producers Sarah Elbert, Will Barratt, and Sean Becker, who directed many of the episodes this season.

Guillermo Del Toro Working on a Monster Adaptation for HBO

Dread Central - Wed, 04/24/2013 - 19:12

Guillermo Del Toro's slate just got a bit more crowded with the announcement today that he's teaming with HBO on an adaptation of Monster, an 18-volume series of Japanese manga by author Naoki Urasawa.

Per Deadline, Del Toro will co-write the story with Steven Thompson, best known for his work on "Dr. Who" and "Sherlock." Thompson will write the pilot, which del Toro intends to direct. Del Toro will be executive producer and Thompson co-executive producer with Angry Films partners Don Murphy and Susan Montford (with whom Del Toro has been working to turn the H.P. Lovecraft novella At the Mountains of Madness into a feature film) executive producing with Exile’s Gary Ungar. Monster publisher Shogakukan will be consulting producer.

The story revolves around a Japanese surgeon living in Germany whose life enters in turmoil after getting himself involved with Johan Liebert, one of his former patients who is revealed to be a dangerous psychopath.

The project was originally set at New Line but proved too sprawling to be confined to a feature film. Check out the manga's synopsis below, and look for more soon.

Brilliant doctor Kenzo Tenma risks his reputation and promising career to save the life of a critically wounded young boy. Unbeknownst to him, this child is destined for a terrible fate. Dread Central - Wed, 04/24/2013 - 18:53

Hipster Zombies has made its way to iOS devices with style! In this fun zombie title, the undead not only crave brains but fashionable vintage clothing. Defend your home from these fashion victims and beat them to death with their own junk... vinyl records?

From the Press Release
The young German independent game developer Sharkbomb Studios is bringing it’s debut game Hipster Zombies to Apple iOS devices. After having only been available on Android it is now available to mac-loving hipsters all over the world. Starting today the brain-blowing game is available for iPhones 3GS and newer, all iPads and the iPod Touch starting with the 4th generation.

In this light-hearted arcade action game you need to defend your neighborhood against invading hordes of zombified hipsters. In the night they shamble towards your block looking for brains and vintage clothes. If you can’t stop them they will tear down your barricades and ruin your home. Can you hold them back until sunlight? And can you do it with nothing but trash for weapons?

“When living itself becomes to mainstream, what else is there to do?”, said Joachim Eckert, Technical Director of Sharkbomb Studios while packing his pipe.

Features

  • Zombies! - It’s a zombie game, so what did you expect? However in our game the Zombies are also hipsters. Plus there’s different types of them and they do different stuff.
  • Places! - Defend a variety of distinct locations against the hipster zombie onslaught. Anything from the run-down back alley to the little coffee shop on the corner. Each level features it’s own pattern of attackers that you have to master. Otherwise it would be totally boring.
  • Guns! - Of course a games with zombies needs some weapons! But in our game the guns are also Trash! To dispatch the Hipster Zombies you’ll have to kill them with what they desire most in (un)life, and that’s useless, old junk like vinyl records or bombs made out of old typewriters. And of course you can upgrade them!
  • Irony! - What would a game about Hipsters be without irony? We don’t know either because you can certainly find some in ours, if you look for it. You get no bonus points for doing so but you might find yourself rewarded with a smug sense of satisfaction.

Mondo Artist Mike Mitchell Profiles Some Genre Greats

    Dread Central - Wed, 04/24/2013 - 16:24

If you're anything like us, then you appreciate the artwork that the Austin, Texas-based company Mondo has brought to the world. The word "beautiful" simply does not cut it sometimes. New has come regarding their next gallery show for artist Mike Mitchell, and we have some samples. Dig it!

    From the Press Release
Mondo, the collectible art division of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announces its next gallery show featuring the artwork of Mike Mitchell, which will run from April 26th to May 25th at the Mondo Gallery located at 4115 Guadalupe Street in Austin, TX. The Mondo Mike Mitchell show will feature a series of portraits as limited edition giclees for subjects that range from crowd favorites to characters that are slightly under-appreciated in pop culture art. The gallery will open to the public on April 26th from 7:00-10:00 pm with regular business hours to follow for the show's duration.

Commenting on his artwork, Mike Mitchell said, "For the portrait series I wanted to keep the personalities there, at least how they exist in my own mind. Then apply that to a traditional portrait, something that most of these characters wouldn't be doing. There's an ironic sense about them that I like, but I also just really love these dudes for who they are, and I didn't want to take too much of that away. When I watch a movie and really connect with a character, I often feel a strong urge to draw/paint that person. This show is allowing me to do that; it's giving me the chance to catch up on years of great characters that I appreciate and admire."

Pushed to the limit by her peers at the dance, Carrie unleashes telekinetic havoc. Brian De Palma’s 1976 film version of CARRIE earned Oscar nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.

MGM and Screen Gems’ CARRIE is directed by Kim Peirce and produced by Kevin Misher (Public Enemies). J. Miles Dale (The Vow) serves as executive producer, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Big Love) wrote the script from King’s original story. CARRIE’s creative team includes Director of Photography Steve Yedlin (Looper), Production Designer Carol Spier (Eastern Promises), Costume Designer Luis Sequeira (The Thing), and Editor Lee Percy (Boys Don’t Cry).

Joel Silver - Victim of a Frightening Home Invasion

    Dread Central - Wed, 04/24/2013 - 15:42

Okay, so that headline sounds pretty dramatic, but when word of a film with a painfully generic title comes our way, we have to do or say something to grab you guys! Read on for the latest horror flick from Joel Silver and Voltage Pictures.

With titles like The Purge and You're Next getting a lot of attention in Hollywood lately, it was only a matter of time before more home invasion themed movies got announced. Enter Home Invasion from director Sean Carter, who'll be working from a script by Joseph Dembner.

Joel Silver will be producing the film, which tells the tale of a family trapped in their own home by a group of strangers; mysteries to their imprisonment become more and more clear as the night goes on. Man, does all that sound familiar. In any event, let's hope the powers-that-be can come up with a title a bit more stirring, shall we? Stay tuned.
