Pontypool Reunion Happening in the Hellmouth
Around these parts we're pretty big fans of the flick Pontypool, and any time word of another project from the minds of the lunatics behind it comes our way, we sit up and pay attention. You should too!
From the Press Release:
Foresight Features, the studio behind Monster Brawl and Exit Humanity, has teamed up with acclaimed writer Tony Burgess (Pontypool) for a 1950's style throwback entitled Hellmouth. Directed by John Geddes (Exit Humanity), the film stars Stephen McHattie (Pontypool, The Watchmen) as Charlie Baker, a dying gravekeeper who’s forced to take one final job. The film also features an eclectic cast including female lead Siobhan Murphy, Julian Richings, Boyd Banks, the star of Exit Humanity, Mark Gibson, and some iconic cameos including Bruce McDonald (Pontypool). An ode to classic horror and fantasy, Hellmouth is a VFX spectacle that chronicles Charlie Baker's dark descent through Gothic landscapes, demonic worlds, and medieval realms as he journeys to discover the secret behind a mysterious cemetery.
"I wanted to create a story-driven film with fantasy and horror combined. Something that was directly inspired by the era of Hitchcock and even Ed Wood. Working with a writer like Tony Burgess was a pleasure as we both love the simplicity in many of the old classic films of the 50's and 60's, and even earlier in films like Nosferatu and Faust. We worked really hard to make Hellmouth something fresh." - Director, John Geddes
The Visual Effects Supervisor and Lead Artist roles are helmed by Toronto's Nick Flook, who has assembled a team of A-list artists who are working around the clock to complete the hefty workload.
"The imagery and style of this film is exactly the type of endless creative opportunity I’ve been wanting to work on for a long time. Dark and moody with dashes of wild fantasy, I can’t think of any artist that wouldn’t want to work on something this cool." - VFX Supervisor, Nick Flook

Hemlock Grove Scores Big with Early Viewers
Eli Roth's series for Netflix, "Hemlock Grove," has been met with quite an unbalanced reaction from fans. Honestly, we've seen everything from "it sucks" to "it's awesome" so at the very least it has people talking, and that's always a good thing. However, it also has them watching.
According to Deadline, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings told analysts today that "Hemlock Grove" is “getting viewed by even more subscribers in its first couple of days” than the highly praised "House of Cards" was in February. Yep, horror is indeed a mighty muscle. Our review will be coming as soon as we weed through every episode. In the interim tell us what you think below.
From executive producer Eli Roth and developed by Brian McGreevy (who wrote the novel on which it's based) and Lee Shipman, "Hemlock Grove" stars Famke Janssen, Dougray Scott, Bill Skarsgård, Landon Liboiron, Penelope Mitchell, and Freya Tingley.
Synopsis:
"Hemlock Grove" is a riveting 13-episode (1 hour each) murder mystery that revolves around the residents of a former Pennsylvania steel town. When 17-year-old Brooke Bluebell is brutally murdered, any of Hemlock’s peculiar inhabitants – or killer creatures – could be suspects. Through the investigation the town’s seamier side is exposed, revealing nothing is what it seems. Beautiful, terrifying, and graphic, "Hemlock Grove" is unlike anything else in its genre.
All 13 episodes of Season 1 are available exclusively on Netflix right now. For more info be sure to "like" "Hemlock Grove" on Facebook, and follow "Hemlock Grove" on Twitter.

Suit Up for a Trio of Manborg Stills
Heading at you like a speeding bullet to the head of some giant evil mutant beast are three new stills from Dark Sky Film's DVD release of Manborg. What the hell is Manborg, you ask? It's just a little flick that should be at the top of your must watch list!
Synopsis:
The forces of Hell have risen to the surface of the Earth to wreak unspeakable havoc on humanity, and it will take a real superhuman to save the world. Or at least Manborg - a spectacular creature of the future and the hero of MANBORG, the cult favorite sci-fi/fantasy homage coming to select theaters and DVD on April 30, 2013, from Dark Sky Films.
The armies of Hell have taken over the Earth, and all that stands in the way of the villainous Count Draculon and humanity's total extinction is a motley crew of misfits led by the mighty Manborg: a warrior who's half-man, half-machine but all hero.
Once a young soldier killed during the first war against Hell, Manborg (Matthew Kennedy, Lazer Ghosts 2) reawakens in the future, rebuilt as a walking weapon and mankind's last hope. Struggling to learn the secret of his origins, Manborg unwittingly befriends a post-apocalyptic Australian punker (Conor Sweeney, Heart of Karl), a knife-wielding vixen (Meredith Sweeney, Father's Day), and a kung fu master (dubbed by Kyle Herbert of DRAGON BALL Z, STREET FIGHTER) before finally squaring off against Count Draculon (Adam Brooks, Father's Day) in a desperate and bloody bid to take back the Earth.
This campy, comedic action flick, which Variety called "enjoyably ridiculous," is also an affectionate and clever tribute to fan favorite '80s films and video games like The Terminator, RoboCop, and Mortal Kombat.
MANBORG is a tour de force for writer-director-editor-makeup artist Steven Kostanski, whose credits include the horror hit Silent Hill and Guillermo del Toro's forthcoming sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim. This lo-fi sci-fi epic from infamous filmmaking collective Astron-6 (Father's Day) was met with an uproariously enthusiastic reception from audiences. Executive produced by TIFF Midnight Madness guru Colin Geddes (Ultra 8 Pictures) and Toronto After Dark's Peter Kupowsky, MANBORG celebrated its world premiere at Austin's 2011 Fantastic Fest and also impressed fans at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival and Fantasia. It has played more than 30 major film festivals worldwide including Whistler, Lund in Sweden, Boston Underground, U.K. Sci-Fi, and Neuchatel in Switzerland.

Exclusive: Brandon Cronenberg Talks Antiviral's Origin, Themes, Subtext, and More
Antiviral, writer-director Brandon Cronenberg’s debut feature, posits a future in which celebrity culture has mutated to an extreme that is at once a high-tech and a profoundly intimate nightmare.
It is also a return to the themes of body horror as ushered into light so many years ago by his father, David Cronenberg. There is something of Shivers and Crimes of the Future certainly in the subject matter explored, but from a different generational perspective, with different eyes and hands creating this not-too-distant future state as either a warning or a certain prediction. Cronenberg recently sat down with Dread Central to offer some remarks on the filmmaking process and the origin of the film's themes and subtext.
The genesis of Antiviral was brought on by a real-life circumstance of the writer-director. “Well, I was sick,” Cronenberg remembers. “It was the beginning of film school, 2004, and I was obsessing over the physicality of my illness and the fact that I had something physically in my body that had come from someone else’s body and how that was an intimate thing if you think about it that way. I was trying to think of a character who would see disease as something intimate, and a celebrity-obsessed fan might reasonably see disease desirable if it came from somebody they were obsessed with and want that disease as a way of being physically connected to them. So it kind of developed into a metaphor. I thought it was an interesting frame to talk about that culture. Once I started thinking about celebrity-obsessed fans wanting diseases, it kind of shifted into that kind of discussion of that culture.”
That dystopian culture is not quite so far off as one might prefer to think Cronenberg reports. “The technology is a real thing...You could, so easily, take a cell off of Britney Spears and grow it, so it’s a small step to imagine—for all I know, someone’s tried to do this for kicks already. And I just liked the idea of celebrity consumption being literal consumption.” The ritually cannibalistic, transubstantiative aspects of Antiviral’s central conceit suggest themes beyond merely the technological and the physical. “Celebrity obsession relates to religion. You look at sainthood; it’s the same thing in a way, the way people are elevated almost to the status of gods, and the repetition of images and the physical fetishism of the relics and people claiming to have finger bones from such and such saint...”
Antiviral’s lead, Caleb Landry Jones, gives a striking performance as an increasingly desperate man seeking to solve a mystery and to save his own life. Cronenberg is effusive about his lead actor: “I can’t say enough good things about him. His agent had worked with my producer on a past film, and when we were searching around for people, he said, 'Oh, hey, why don’t you take a look at Caleb?' And so we saw a bunch of clips from things that he’d been in, an audition he’d done for another film. He’s just so exciting. He’s just one of those actors that have that special something and you look at him and he’s immediately interesting. Even if he’s doing something totally mundane, he somehow turns it into something interesting, and so we wanted him.”
According to the director, Jones’ acting is informed by the actor’s passionate love for film, especially German Expressionist and comedies from the early days of cinema: “He consumes films at a huge rate. He’s way more knowledgeable about film than I am, and he’s ten years younger than me. So he’s coming from a place where he does a lot of that old silent film thing. You can see it in his acting; he’s a very physical actor. Directing him, we talked a lot before we started shooting about the character, and he’s very dedicated and would read and re-read the script and catch things that even I’d forgotten about!”
“For example, there’s one shot, I remember, we were about halfway through the shooting, and after we did the take, he said, ‘Brandon did you like the word I chose? What do you think about me twitching my eye on that word?’ And I was like, first of all it was a wide shot, so I didn’t see that his eye twitched, but I didn’t realize... I mean, as we went on, I realized just how much control over his body that he had. He was picking points in the dialogue to have this little tic and so he had a very detailed technique to take his acting to a strange and wonderful degree. It made it easy to work with him because he just gave me tons of stuff. I would say a little, 'Do this, do that,' give him a little direction between takes, but it wasn’t like I had to draw this performance out of him or anything. He’s just really good.”
Cronenberg’s stimulating collaborative experience didn’t just involve those in front of the camera but also included those behind the lens. Like his director father, David, Brandon prefers to keep the shooting process fresh and improvisatory, which makes maintaining a clear connection with his crew essential. “I never storyboard because I don’t like to have that specific an idea before I get there because I feel like it’s more fun to find it. Also once sometimes you have an idea and then you get there and when you’re with the actors and the sets, it changes everything anyway... [Cinematographer] Karim Hussain came into town like a month before pre-production, and we meticulously went through the script and created a very theoretical shot list because we had no actors or anything, but it was just a way of creating the rules, and we were discussing how and what we wanted to do with it. So we had this general idea, and every night we would have dinner with Karim and [First Assistant Director] Rob Cotterill, and I would say, 'Here are the shots that I’m kind of thinking of,' and ask if they had any better ideas that they wanted to add.”
Cronenberg finds his collaborators to be a vital resource not only for creative ideas, but also for practical ones: “I mean, I think you need a strong sense of what you’re going to do, but at the end of the day it’s about making the film as good as possible, and if you’re working with good people, sometimes they come with great ideas and you should be open to that. Or there were practical things. I would say, ‘Let’s do fifty shots,’ and Rob would say, ‘Um, we’re going to run out of time so why don’t we prioritize and…’ We referred to Rob as ‘The Adult’ because he understands adult things like that.”
DP Hussain played an essential role in achieving the distinctive look of Antiviral: “He’s a better made Swiss Army knife of cinematographers...He’s technically very skilled so there’s no problem there, but he also strikes a good balance where he has his own good ideas but uses them to support your ideas. He gets very quickly, in my experience, what I was talking about, and it was like, 'Oh, okay, here are all these other amazing ideas that are linked to that aesthetic and stuff that we can talk about.' So he was just a great collaborator. He wasn’t a passive technician, but at the same time he wasn’t overbearing and trying to impose his own will.”
With Antiviral Cronenberg establishes himself as a challenging and provocative new writer-director, one interested in using the medium to explore uncomfortable social and psychological terrain. “I wanted to become a filmmaker partly because I needed a job. I didn’t know what to do with myself. I was writing and drawing. I wanted to be a visual artist. And I wanted to write novels and be a musician, and at a certain point I realized that was a very bad approach because you can’t get good at all of that stuff so I thought that film would be a good way to collect all of that. So I went to film school.”
“I think that there’s part of film, and the making of film, that reflects what we do in our day-to-day lives that we take these various experiences and we sew them together into narratives and we see causality in the world, but we’re not really seeing causality directly; it’s all in our heads. And that I find really interesting—that if you take two images, which are shot at different times, and are actual documents, because, even when you’re not making a documentary, every time you’re filming something, you’re documenting it. And the fact that you can cut those documented moments together and they connect to each other and the mind fuses them into some kind of causal narrative is pretty interesting to me. So I’m interested in the fact that it’s an art form based on the play of documented moments in order to trick the mind.”
Antiviral (review here) stars Caleb Landry Jones, Sarah Gadon, Malcolm McDowell, Douglas Smith, Matt Watts, and James Cade.
Synopsis
Antiviral follows Syd March, an employee at a clinic that sells injections of live viruses harvested from sick celebrities to obsessed fans. Biological communion - for a price. Abbie Cornish Seeks Solace in the Supernatural
More casting news has hit the interwebs for the long talked about flick Solace as Seven Psychopaths' Abbie Cornish has joined the previously announced Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Anthony Hopkins, and Colin Farrell.
Afonso Poyart (Two Rabbits) will direct the production, which is on schedule to begin in May. Solace was written by Sean Bailey (currently president of production at Disney), Ted Griffin, James Vanderbilt, and Peter Morgan. It originated at New Line but never came together so producers Beau Flynn, Tripp Vinson, and Matthias Emcke got it back and obtained financing through Claudia Blumheuber’s Silver Reel.
The story centers on a former doctor with psychic abilities (Hopkins) who is drawn into a serial-killer case, only to find that the killer (Farrell) is a psychic as well - so the two men can detect each other's moves. Morgan is playing a veteran FBI agent heading the investigation of a series of grisly murders. He recruits Hopkins' character to help catch the killer.
Look for more soon.

We're breaking away from our usual horror coverage for a bit, hoping to help out a friend and colleague. Ed Douglas has been a strong voice in the online film community for quite a few years now. He gave of himself and his insight freely, and now is the time to give something back.
Recently Ed fell ill while covering CinemaCon in Las Vegas for ComingSoon.net. As of this writing he is in the hospital battling acute leukemia and has no health insurance. Please join us and show your support as he battles against cancer!
Any amount of money will help. If you can - please click here to donate. Even if you don't have the extra scratch, please keep him in your prayers during what is no doubt going to be an extremely difficult time.
Thank you.

Synopsis:
A reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.
The quiet suburb of Chamberlain, Maine, is home to the deeply religious and conservative Margaret White (Moore) and her daughter, Carrie (Moretz). Carrie is a sweet but meek outcast whom Margaret has sheltered from society. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin (Judy Greer) tries in vain to protect Carrie from local mean girls led by the popular and haughty Chris Hargenson (Portia Doubleday, Youth in Revolt), but only Chris’ best friend, Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde, The Three Musketeers), regrets their actions. In an effort to make amends, Sue asks her boyfriend, high school heartthrob Tommy Ross (newcomer Ansel Elgort), to take Carrie to prom. Pushed to the limit by her peers at the dance, Carrie unleashes telekinetic havoc. Brian De Palma’s 1976 film version of CARRIE earned Oscar nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.
MGM and Screen Gems’ CARRIE is directed by Kim Peirce and produced by Kevin Misher (Public Enemies). J. Miles Dale (The Vow) serves as executive producer, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Big Love) wrote the script from King’s original story. CARRIE’s creative team includes Director of Photography Steve Yedlin (Looper), Production Designer Carol Spier (Eastern Promises), Costume Designer Luis Sequeira (The Thing), and Editor Lee Percy (Boys Don’t Cry).
