The juvenile yet bawdy comedy of Seth Mcfarlane is a cultural juggernaut. Not only has his recent film “TED” been positively praised by critics, but his various animated works such as THE FAMILY GUY, THE CLEVELAND SHOW and AMERICAN DAD have now taken over every slot on Fox’s Prime Time Sunday night Animation Domination line up except for THE SIMPSONS.  With such success it was only a matter before his suggestive, adult-themed cartoons inspired more derivative, deviated works from studios that are somehow even more shameless and hardcore than Fox.  In case you haven’t figured it out yet, this is the Exquisite Pictures live action “porno parody” adaption of the popular cartoon AMERICAN DAD; a bizarre mix of animation and fornication. Let us take a look at this strange mixture of patriotism and eroticism and see if it makes our male readers rise like ballpark patrons during the National Anthem.

First it should be said, for fairness sake that I never much cared for American Dad. I watch it purely because it the final cartoon at the tail end of a Sunday nights worth of animated programming I have already viewed yet because I am something of a completest, without ever really wanting to, I have somehow seen every episode. My problem with A.D. is the fact that they have potentially some of the most wicked characters in mainstream animation; a trigger happy CIA agent named Stan who never actually shoots anyone, a bored but emotionally starved housewife named Francine who yet never strays and his earthy hippie daughter named Hayley who often hints at extremely fringe, liberalistic, counterculture tendency of all kinds, but of course never acts on them.  Yet, despite this cast, and some admittedly crazy goings on (which are always suggested, never shown) the end of American Dad always ends with a great sense of understanding as everyone realizes how much they ultimately love each other despite their differences and every episode usually results in a tidy little ending filled with love, forgiveness and tolerance. This crap might have worked for THE FLINTSTONES back in the 60’s, but what I want in a modern animated cartoon from Seth Mcfarlane is more nonstop, “Hanna Barbaric” action, wacky madness and a non-linear plot conclusion reminiscent of THE FAMILY GUY.  I often mused aloud to anyone who would listen that AMERICAN DAD shouldn’t have been a cartoon after all, but a live action show.  Animation should always be some kind of slapstick, crazy, carefree. Yet in the case of American Dad their world is very ordinary. Of course there is the fact that they have a an alien in their attic named Roger, and a talking fish named Klaus, yet the whole damn show is traditional (mainstream) enough to have been better told as any other live action sitcom chock full of “family values” and even if it wouldn’t admittedly be the most realistic live action show, it certainly couldn’t have been any stupider than ALF which actually ran for four years on NBC in prime time in the late eighties.

This is why when I saw there that there was an AMERICAN DAD adult film from Exquisite Films I had to contact my usual company liaison and have it sent. A live action version adult film of AMERICAN DAD certainly wouldn’t be the most unfathomable thing, all of their plots have a deviant sexual element to them which of course is never acted upon, but is suggested constantly, tongue-in-cheek. For example, does anyone remember the episode of A.D. where Stan Smith drove his wife Francine and daughter Hailey into prostitution just to avoid letting a car salesman get the better of him? One could only imagine what the adult film version of this family would be like where “suggestion” would be replaced by “sex action” as the prime method of storytelling and inflicting smiles onto its audience.

The one thing I never could have assumed is just how damned entertaining this would be.

For one thing, the cast are indeed accurate representations of their animated inspirations. As usual for an Exquisite film, the costumes of the principals are live action carbon copies of their characters to such a degree of accuracy that if you were to meet them on the street in real life even the most casual fan of the show would be hard pressed not to recognize them. Stan (Evan Stone) has an ill-fitting Reagan Haircut (toupee) and an American Flag pin on his lapel. Francine (Briana Banks) has the same bright pink dress, vinyl shoes and “hot housewife” makeup style you would expect her to. Andy San Dimas is a hot copy Hayley Smith right down to the pink flowers on her aqua headband, (which admittedly seems like a trite observation, but an important costume accessory nonetheless as it will be one of the few things she wears for the entire duration of this film).  Finally Stan Smith, (Evan Stone) wears the red jacket, orange shirt and spectacles of a socially (and fashion) challenged, mild mannered geek. As for Roger, (Anthony Rosano) he is a guy in an extremely authentic alien suit who I will discuss more in a bit.

Another thing that should be mentioned is that the backgrounds and sets have a high degree of authenticity to them.  From the furniture, to the living room design all the way down to the strange Trivial Pursuit “pie piece” insignia on the fridge, this could have only taken place in the Smith house. Admittedly, certain sets are overused for certain scenes but that just somehow adds to the strange authenticity of this. Even so I would be strangely wary of any cheap, crudely spray-painted powder blue vinyl couches purchased from the San Fernandos CA Craigslist at the end of 2011 after seeing what ten porn stars spent three scenes doing on this one…

Of course because this is an adult film review it is high time we talk about the depictions of intimacy. While X Rated, all scenes are mainstream, consensual and all players are reasonably attractive as well as spitting (if not swallowing) images of their characters.  Technically speaking the scenes are nothing you haven’t seen before, but in some strange sense they are something you have been waiting to see for years.  Roger finally ends has sex with Hayley and later Francine after years of suggestive, though shameless flirtation with both of them on the original series. At his father’s behest, Steve finally loses his virginity at a strip club to a couple of pro’s. Steve’s three sci-fi friends end up with Hayley after she pries the plastic swords from their hands and they soon stab her with more impromptu adult blunt objects of more adult play. I am not going to assume this will be everyone’s thing, but there is nothing going on here between whatever character that hasn’t been suggested in at least one episode of the AMERICAN DAD TV show, so even if adult film isn’t something you find to be entertaining, it is hard to argue that this isn’t somehow fulfilling, of only on the level of something that has been allowed to run it’s logical course after years of suggestive, stupid jokes.

But that is not the reason I am giving this five stars, I am giving it five stars because for the first time ever an “Exquisite” parody has not only visually encapsulated the copyrighted characters of a more popular mainstream work having sex, they have captured the spirit of the original series with intelligence and a careful attention to the details of the original. Maybe it is simply because for the first time this particular Exquisite Film parody is the attempt to render two dimensional drawings of yet more two dimensional animated characters as real people and a great deal of original approximation is acceptable, if not welcome when comparing the two versions, even by the most ardent fans? Yet I like to think there is something more…

For the first time ever I found AMERICAN DAD to be actually funny.  Roger, (Anthony Rosario in a crotchless alien suit) is absolutely hilarious. As usual, Roger adopts different disguises and hats that wouldn’t actually fool anyone as placed on his giant headed, misshapen green alien body, but much as in the TV series everyone somehow believes them, only in this case the Smith women actually fall prey to his assumed identities and have sex with him. Also, the exact sense of humor of the show is evident in the following scene which I use for illustrative example. Hayley wants to save the rainforest. So Roger, (now calling himself “Big Daddy Jam Dog” and wearing only a tiny pimp hat and feather boa) encourages Hayley to become one of his “bitches”, a proposal to which she eagerly agrees. He proceeds to engage in actual sex with her in every possible fashion for thirty minutes, until messy completion. This now done, he tells her to “come back when you want to save the whales” in the exact fay, snotty, effeminate voice of Roger (Sounding a lot like Paul Lynde, as usual).

Most of the movies I review ultimately make me feel nothing, certainly not anything remotely approximating joy. This itself somehow makes me happy if not altogether proud, considering how admittedly sick, evil and morally repellant most of them are. Yet, somehow this last scene made me laugh so hard I actually ached in a way that porno was never intended to inflict on a man. Suffice to say, it isn’t every day I find film that finds a new way to make me hurt, five skulls from me.

American Dad XXX is clearly Exquisite Pictures best parody release thus far that I have reviewed. It was designed by someone who actually was quite familiar with the original series; someone who has studied every nuance and somehow found a way to elevate these characters to another dimension of deviance while still remaining true to the distinct style of the original work and yet gives us something what the source material simply cannot; will not do. I just hope they don’t do a FAMILY GUY XXX version. As much fun as it would be to see Quagmire’s exploits finally portrayed in living color, I don’t think even I am ready to see a four hundred pound actor playing Peter Griffin having sex onscreen, despite the obvious comedy value of such an endeavor.

The main feature is close to three hours long. Extras include a second disk containing three hours of behind the scenes footage plus a photo gallery and a compilation of the last ten seconds of every scene.  I believe they call it a “Rum Keel” or something…hmm.
